It’s my name day…

…which i don’t much care for, but my family continues to insist on celebrating. The upside is this time i got a watch!

My dear sweet mother decided to take it upon herself to pick out this one for me. She’s not a woman of means, nor is she a watch nerd, so when i first felt the size and weight of the wrapped present I knew what it could be, and upon unwrapping to see the Bulova box I was right, but knew immediately to keep my expectations subdued. I was expecting nothing at all, so a gifted watch is total awesome sauce.

I just didn’t expect a watch like this.

I’m not much of a dress watch personality, hardly ever need them, but i still enjoy a couple on occasion. Not much for two tone, or precious metals. I didn’t think i was much of a blue dialed kinda guy. And if I had to choose, i slightly favor mechanical over quartz. All that considered, I still love it.

Lotsa little things. I love the slightly domed crystal, which is some kind of “Metalized Domed Mineral Crystal” whatever “metalized” means, but it goes all the way to the edge of the case! Don’t see that very often, gotta say it scares me a little, so I’ll try to be brave but mindful. No AR coating as far as I can tell.

Love the applied indices, love the subtle brushed starburst, and the radiated sub-dials. I don’t know the name for it*, but I’m not always keen on the way the day complication is done here. I would have just rather another sub-dial. The handset is lackluster, and I’m not sure having them slotted with lume was the right choice or not, TBD.

The case is a perfect 39.75mm wide on the calipers, 11.4mm thick, and I loved seeing the drilled lugs until I considered the size of them…15.5mm, FML. So it looks like if I’m ever to change straps on this guy it’s gonna be a treasure hunt or custom.** Decent milled butterfly clasp, with split push pins. Both case and bracelet are polished, except the gold-tone links are brushed. The entire piece is a fingerprint magnet and I gave up keeping it clean for the pictures.

My mom mentioned that my grandpa wore Bulova for most of what she remembered (sadly grandma didn’t save any of his watches for whatever reason) so now i have that connection, which is neat to think of.

Overall, it’s a happily welcomed addition to my dress watch category, definitely not something I would have picked out for myself but so very thankful to be gifted, and look forward to wearing.

Edit:

*it’s called a retrograde complication

**not spring bars. not split push pins. not budging with my poker bit. I dunno.

What a thoughtful gift. You had a "metalized" crystal gap in your collection. No longer.

This is one of the current Bulova models that I don't have to pretend to like. Those flush mount crystals are neat and distinctive. I presume they are glued in place like a car windscreen?

And who knew I needed to expand my 15.5mm straps collection as well? Trouble is it seems they aren't spring bars at all. They don't even look like split pins, so I dunno if this will ever come off the bracelet.

It's a stunning watch, with all the love from your family! The glass gives it a really interesting look for sure.

If I were a thinkin’ man, which i avoid at all costs, I’d put an inner lip or protruding ring on the underside of the crystal and press it into the case for some stability, on closer inspection i don’t think that’s what’s going on here, but i dunno how these things work so you’re windshield method is probably right.

Happy name's day and congratulations on the new watch. Stunning!

·

Very cool, everyone should have at least one blue watch in the collection and now you do.  Just think this goes with jeans and anything!

·

Really nice looking watch. I am a big Bulova fan myself, and also have a bit of that family connection. Both my father and grandfather had Bulova watches that are long gone.😁

·

Go Mom! She's awesome. Congratulations ✨

That’s what they say about the blue watch, I’ll be seeing how true it is.

My suspicion is that the blue ring under the crystal is paint or something on the bottom of the crystal to hide the adhesive underneath, the same as the black borders on auto glass. The use of matching color is brilliant, and pulls the trick off well, even though the width is necessarily large.

You'd think some sort of centering lip would exist for positioning if not actual friction fit, but I don't see how they could hide that.

If you‘re going to go blue…then really go blue. Mom was apparently keen on this when choosing her gift to you. Any watch in any style, when received as a gift, heightens its appeal for most people I would think. But when presented with a handsome piece such as this…it props it up even farther into the sentimental ether.

Your mum is cool. That is a cool watch. Also happy birthday man.

·

Your mother is an awesome lady.. wear her token of love in good health and enjoy it man.

·

Love that description - 15.5 lugs and a metal crystal 😂

I generally prefer that my metalized portions of a watch are the metal bits... but sure! why not metalize the crystal?

That crazy contraption is fantastic!  Wear it with pride!

Your Mom loves you big time. It's a precious gift and part of your collection. No luxury watch can ever match its value. Congrats and enjoy, pare! 🍻

·

Be thankful that your Mom thought of you and the same time she picked out a good watch brand. It may not be your cup of tea type of a watch. Just considerate a special gift.

·

Well your Mom rules! I think it's stunning!

She can be a kind lady. And the watch is quite a looker.
