Which would you choose?

My wife and I are having our first child this August, and I am planning to get a watch to commemorate the moment (as well as to one day pass on to her). I am definitely leaning a certain way but of this list (similar price range), which would you pick if you were in my shoes?

Not that it needs to fit, but I have included a photo of my current collection if you prefer to pick based on overall cohesiveness.

Let me know your reasoning! Can't wait to hear y'all's thoughts.

Try a couple of watches. Not only for you. Try MIDO Comander.

Based on movement alone, I’d pick Lorier.

Full disclosure, I own a Baltic Aquascaphe and a Lorier Zephyr.

But the movement in the MR01 puts me off.

I appreciate the insight! What about the movement do you not like? Is it an aesthetics issue or a functionality issue?

Actually from an aesthetic perspective, it’s gorgeous. I’m more concerned about its reliability and longevity as its unproven vs the Miyota 9000 series.

I’m an unabashed fanboy of the Miyota 9000 series as it’s reliable, affordable and easily serviced/replaced. Plus it’s incredibly thin.

That makes complete sense. Thank you for the input!

Speaking as a father, you will be going to “war” my friend. Sleepless nights, poop parade and diapers duties. You need something cost effective and war-proof! Hamilton would be my pick! But I would choose bracelet tho, you don’t want to change diapers on a nato… 😂

That’s the way do.

·

Seeing your collection i think the baltic would be a better adition, design wise speaking. But i do find the Lorier the better looking

·

The Lorier is rather special. I find the Hamilton a bit boring, and that specific Baltic is an odd fish.

You can also look at Taska Watches.

(I have Lorier Hyperion and Baltic Hermétique)

·

Congrats on your first child! I like the plan to commemorate with a watch that you might pass down one day. I think the Lorier Astra would be a nice option. It fills a similar spot as the Baltic, but feels a bit sportier with the bracelet. Think it’s also pretty timeless and something your daughter could wear on a strap 20 years from now. Congrats again and keep us posted on what you go with!

Lorier Neptune

Also for the extra $35, have Lorier engrave it.

I prefer Lorier, but to commemorate an occasion I would go with a legacy brand. That’s just me. Congrats!

Clearly spoken by a parenting veteran 💪 thank you for the take. I definitely hadn't thought about ideal materials for diaper changing 😂

I think another option might be better. The Baltic is the best aesthetic choice, and will easily fit unisex. But the movement would put me off, not because it's unreliable, but it is a risk if this is a watch you want to pass on. It will be harder to repair.

The Lorier would be a safer bet, and is still unisex, but maybe not as "special" seeming. The Hamilton will be the most likely to last, and have the backing of a long-standing company, but to be honest, it's not an aesthetic that is particularly popular with women. At least, it's not an aesthetically safe choice.

I think the Zephyr would be a better choice in the Lorier lineup.

@YuyoSal's Mido Commander recommendation is a great idea. I don't know the watch, but the brand will still be around down the line, and it's a much more "special" looking model that will work for men or women.

·

I’m a Baltic fan but I’d skip the MR01 and go for the Lorier Neptune on this. Stout movement vs the chinese microrotor that has reported issues.

·

MAEN Hudson 38 or Brooklyn 36 or any several farer options that also have a free engraving added to commemorate! Congratulations

·

I chose the Hamilton, it’ll see you through everything and always be appropriate and when you are ready to pass it down, Hamilton will be around or any watchmaker should be able to service it. Who knows where some of these micro brands will be in 20-50 years.

·

C, I think it is a tried and proven watch, brand and movement. Baltic is looked classy, but doubtful about its movement longevity.

·

If it's a Lorier, I'll go for Astra. That is one of the most beautiful watches I've seen in a while

Not the Baltic. I had the MR01 and sold it because the movement is ok to look at but no way will it last. I would strongly advise any other watch with a good movement from either Seiko or sellita. Easy to service and robust as hell. So many watches to choose from I agree with others I would pick 36mm if she inherits one day, with a screw down crown and some water resistance.

Regardless I hope all goes well. Best wishes to mum

Personally, I don’t get why the Hamilton Khaki field watch is recommended so much. It’s a very expensive version of what it is and doesn’t make sense except for one for is looking for or buys into Hamilton’s brand history. I have similar feelings about the Nazi Flieger companies. Like, Vario’s Trench may or may not be a good suggestion for people looking for an early 1900s looking watch, but it makes the most sense for a WW1 history lover or peope who appreciation for stuff like that.

I think choosing something that is unisex friendly should be the prime factor, particularly when it comes to size. I second the suggestion for the Lorier Astra.

I think both would be in need of a good cleaning. At least one can chuck a NATO in the wash.

Three great watches - each a very different proposition

The Hamilton is the sensible option as a neutral tool watch / field watch - but I love both of the others. Baltic is an up coming brand, maybe there’s some kudos or upside in that choice? I already have a Hamilton so I’d go for the Baltic as a dress watch. But… hmm that Lorier diver looks the business …. 🤔

·

Or maybe buy yourself a bit of very affordable Gerald Genta

1970s class and get a Swiss made Tissot PRX. One of my younger colleagues recently bought one - and on that fitted bracelet it looks absolutely stunning
