SOTC 2022 Thoughts & Advice

Image

The collection in it's current stage with 13 other watches boxed up and waiting for giving away or selling, for most of 2022 I really only wore my Alpinist and the gshock was the gym/cardio/daddying watch. I was trying to get away with a minimal and utilitarian collection, something to look good... and do the job, and something when shtf, well I always did want to try a GMT and I tend to heavily wear my watches and it's been a little while now with the seiko 5 gmt, great watch, has it's quirks and I should really write a review on it. Still something doesn't feel right, I honestly feel like as great as the GMT is

1... dont "need" one and

2 I love wearing the alpinist, now

3 watches are not by no means too much, i'd like to add a  dress watch to the collection.
Here's the kicker, my daughter of nearly 3 years old has fixated on the GMT, it's all she lets me wear, otherwise she gets mad at me... "I dont want GSHOCK"  or "OTHER ONE, GMT!" ... guys... what have I done?

I like that i have a watch she likes, and I wear it all day, she likes to play with the bezel though shes not strong enough to turn it on her own. Do i keep the watch simply because it's kinda useful, I like it though dont love it, and my daughter loves it. (honestly i think its because it has a lot of round shapes on it, she visibly cringes at the alpinist, i suppose it's the pointy shapes.)

OR do i stick to my guns throw this watch onto the sell price and get a dress piece.

It's saturday morning here, happy weekend all please weigh in at your leisure, I haven't been online much lately and took a break from my usual addiction of watch crunching hehe, be good to catchup with everyone... i'll be weighing in on your posts this weekend.

share your thoughts, your own collecting experiences and your thoughts on nomos if you have first hand experience, would love your thoughts on the gmt as well...

Honestly... miss the simpler days of just wearing an apple watch... the irony.

Maybe keep the GMT until your daughter gets tired of it?  Long term I prefer the Nomos to the Seiko GMT, but maybe you can humor her for a bit. Or man up and stop being a slave to a 3 yo. Just kidding, we never stop being slaves to our children. As usual, I’ve provided little help and mostly just comment to amuse myself.

i hear ya man! I hardly wear 3 of the my Seiko gmt but i was planning to give them away as x-mas presents to my brothers if they don’t piss me off, anyways Nomos ohh so nice and clean dials man also hav wyou looked at Junghans as well I think I hav e shared a photo of my quartz chrono one and since my oldest daughter doesn’t wear hers I borrow it from time to time…it’s so light and comfortable, good luck with the dress watch I say do et…😉 also don’t worry about your daughter she will love the Nomos trust me I have 4 daughters 🍻

I for one have no children, a GMT, or a Nomos, so I anticipate being just as helpful (if not less) as @thekris was lol.

I would maybe entertain the idea of hanging on to the GMT. Perhaps your girl will move on past her obsession with the watch. If she doesn't outgrow it, well then I see a great tradition to hand it down to her in 15 years or so (but that's your call).  I know selling the GMT would help lead towards the Nomos, but it seems like there is a fun story with the GMT that I personally would not want to let go of just yet. Good luck

p.s. I have a Seiko SARB 017 on a strapcode bracelet, and it is probably my most worn watch in my ~22-watch collection, so I get you haha.

I’d say keep it for now and be happy she likes a practical wristwatch. This is my 5 year old son’s favourite of my collection.

It’s really sweet to hear this and that she connects with you and your interest in watches. I am just going to parrot the others and suggest holding on to it, at least for as long as she is interested in it. Would be a great gift to her in the future if her interest persists. I know most watch people wish their children connected with a piece of theirs!

More Nomos love in this corner too.  Keep the GMT to give to her later, get the Nomos For you now.

Glad to see you back with us.

Nomos is a very good idea of the dress watch. If you like the minimalist style of the brand. If I have a little advice to give you ; be careful with the lug to lug in Nomos which is quite prominent.
