My wife loves Daniel Wellington... AKA, how I added the GS SBGW289 to my personal collection

Back in April of 2022, GS announced the manual wind, 3-hand, no-date SBGW289.

Image

With a diameter of only 36.5mm, I thought it would make the perfect watch for my wife.  I thought, maybe, since I’d gotten bitten by the GS bug, I could get her somehow interested, and voila, we could share a fun hobby together…  because I sure as sh*t ain't gonna do gardening, or get into birding, or collect rare books or paintings, or any of the other things she does!

The only problem is that she’d stopped even wearing watches until very recently - she just used her phone to tell the time, like any sane human being would.  She said, “Oh, yeah, I did have a watch that I really liked a lot, but the battery died, and I never got around to getting the battery changed.”  She rummaged through her nightstand, and pulled this out…

Image

My reaction…

Image

I then proceeded to lecture her on high horology, and busted out the laptop to show her photos of “acceptable” watches.  Unfortunately, everything i brought to her attention, she immediately rejected outright, laughing at how such ugly watches could be so expensive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gaiFsgeO1k

Clearly she was a benighted muggle.  Nothing I showed her appealed to her.  “Why are women’s watches so blingy?  I just want something minimalist,” she said.

I went off and applied my Google-fu for hours on end, coming up with 18 different “minimalist” options, every one of which would receive the watch nerd community’s Good Housekeeping Stamp of Approval.  One after the other, she rejected them out of hand.  All except for the Linjer…

Image

“Yeah, that one’s okay,” she said.  “It’s the one that looks closest to the Daniel Wellington.”

So, I dutifully ordered it for her.  And, when it arrived, she gladly put it on her wrist and began wearing a watch again…  just to please me.

Nonetheless, I still couldn’t live with this outcome.  So, I ordered the SBGW289 for her.  And when it arrived, she said she loved it!

Image

End of story.

...

No, not even close.  She kept rotating between the Linjer and the GS.  When I asked her which she really preferred, she demurred, but said, “Well, it’s incredible how much more accurate the GS is.  Every morning, I have to reset the Linjer.  It’s always running like a couple minutes fast.”

I just figured that was due to being Daniel Wellington-adjacent.  Suckitude causes a watch to suck at keeping time!

So, for nearly a year, my wife had been dutifully wearing the GS, until Valentine’s Day this year rolled around.  My 9 year-old and I were at the mall, and she said that she wanted to go to a jewelry store.  I said, “What?  You want to get some jewelry?”  She said, “No, I want to look at diamond rings, and use my allowance to get mom something for Mother’s Day.”  It was February, and she was already planning out the gift months in advance!  We went to Cartier, and the cheapest diamond ring they had in the entire store was something like $4,000.  When the sales associate told my daughter how much the ring cost, I could see her eyes almost bulge out of her head.  When we left the store, she said, “Dad, one day I’m going to become a billionaire, and buy whatever I want from that store.”

Image

We went to another jeweler’s and found an emerald ring for $300.  “Mom will love it,” my daughter said.  “It’s green, and that’s her favorite color.”  So we came up with a plan to go 50/50 on the ring for Mother’s Day.  But, my wife’s preferences can be truly inscrutable, so when we got home, I told her about our daughter’s wonderful gesture, and my wife said sheepishly, “That is so sweet of her.  But, I don’t like emeralds at all!”  I told her, “No problem, I’ll find a way to let her know that we’ll find you something else for Mother’s Day.”  At that point, my wife said, “Well, you know, it’s funny, but there was a ring I was looking at, but it’s ridiculous.”  I said, “Oh, really?”  She said, “Yeah, it has this flower design from Liberty.  But, I’d honestly rather save my money for rare books.”

So, I went into the study and used my Google-fu, and discovered that it was this ring that she was looking at.

Image

My daughter and I ordered it for her.  3 days later, it arrived, we surprised her with it, and when she put it on, she was SOOOOOOO HAPPY.  I mean, this was something that she WOULD NEVER have gotten for herself, but that clearly she really, really, really liked.

Image

And when I saw how much she really loved the ring, it made me realize that SHE’D LIED TO ME ABOUT LOVING THE SBGW289!!!  She didn’t love it.  She was totally lying through her teeth, just to please me!

When I confronted her about her perfidious dissembling, she broke down and admitted as much.  You know which watch she did really like?  Yup.  You guessed it.  The Daniel Wellington.  I was resigned to buying her another one.

“Well, the Linjer is great.  It’s the perfect watch.  But, it just runs too fast.  If it actually kept time, and I didn’t have to adjust it every morning, I would wear it.”

I had something to admit to her too.  “Baby, it’s magnetized is all.  I can order a $10 thing off Amazon and demagnetize it in like 30 seconds.  The only reason I hadn’t done so before was because I wanted the inaccuracy to force you to wear the GS instead.”

$10 and 2-day Amazon Prime free shipping later...

... my wife has the Daniel Wellington homage watch that she loves, and I now have added the GS SBGW289 to my personal watch rotation.

Is it okay that my wife loves Daniel Wellington?  Or is it finally time?

Image

Is it okay for me to wear such a tiny watch?  Pink, no less?  What is the meaning of life?  And how many sentient AI can fit on the head of a needle?

My crystal ball says, I see a NOMOS in her future.

This was such a fun ride. You are wise for letting her enjoy what she likes while nicely adding a beautiful watch to your collection.

·

Only one option.

Auction the GS for charity and the rights to choose your avatar.

Also, if that's your wife in the top picture, props for showing women can rock a crotch shot too.

I spent a lot of money on a Rolex once only to have it sit in a jewelry box for about the last decade. I make cheaper mistakes now.

Wow so much to unpack here. Yes, marriage is a string of lies after you say “I Do” to get you through the next day, until the next battle.

“Honey, does this make me look fat?”

“Should I get the Porsche?”

“I can wear polka dots and stripes right?”

Answer at your own peril…

Image

Then you realize your life has meaning because of the happiness that that little white lies have created and you move wistfully down the space-time continuum.

You will wear a tiny pink watch because that’s where life’s choices have led you. The meaning of life is that life gives you meaning.

After all, what choice do you have, your wife loves Daniel and lied to keep you happy 🤣

The fact she likes Daniel Wellington means you’d be wasting your money on anything of quality.

I would be sooooo stoked if she wanted this!

The only problem is that I'm really not at all a fan of smaller watches! I know the trend is toward smaller dials and whatnot, but I ain't hopping onto that train!

I have a 17cm wrist, and really can't abide anything less than 40mm diameter and 13mm thick!

This is my perfect watch...

·

Get her a Nomos and tell her "It's like your old DW but you don't need to change the battery ever"

·

Yaknow a Nomos Orion looks a heck of a lot like that Daniel Wellington.

Let me know when she rejects it so I can give you my forwarding address. 😏

No, no, no... I took that image straight from Daniel Wellington's site!

My wife is this truly weird set of contradictions....

  • Used to do ballet

  • Was an illustrator and is deeply into fine art

  • Collects rare books

So, one might expect her to look / dress like this...

Image

But, she's also...

  • The man of the house - she does all the repairs and has a massive set of power tools

  • Into landscaping

  • An entomologist and studies insects for a living

So, one might expect her to look / dress like this...

Image

Not sure how Daniel Wellington fits into it all!

What did you do with the watch? Did you sell it and buy yourself 100 vintage watches?

Thanks for the good read! so many twists and turns🤣

My wife gave her Mondaine watch to her mum. now passed away, she just can't bear to wear that watch again, so I tempted her by going to the Cartier store to check out the tank solar. She was tempted, but not convinced. Like your wife, mine was saying she "loves it" but not "LOVE IT!". So we went back again to see other variants another day. Upon parking, we walked past the JLC store, and I jokingly said we should check out the reverso. I was surprised to find that she likes it better than any of the tanks, little did I know the duoface is double the price of the tank.

But you know what they say... happy wife happy life and the rest is history.

Winding her watch becomes her daily ritual, doubling as a super expensive fidget toy when she is bored in meetings.

Well, to her credit, the Duoface is like 1,000x better than the Tank Solar!!!

It's a DW homage.

Am I the only one who is genuinely interested in what the other 17 minimalist options are? I’m in a similar position with my wife, and would be super interested in other DW-esque watches, all the better if they’re quartz.

This is what came up immediately on Google...

https://www.amazon.com/minimalist-watches-women/s?k=minimalist+watches+for+women

https://www.thesimpleparadise.com/minimalist-watches-for-women/

But, I was looking for "watch nerd approved" and none of these would meet that hurdle!

So, more digging revealed...

That’s a great list…there has to be something that peaks her interest…

My 10 year-old has already picked out the 2 watches she wants from my collection...

So, I said, "Okay, so these are the 2 watches you want when I die, right?"

She said, "Yup! Plus all the money."

Didn't even miss a beat.

Your daughter has good taste and practical acumen! Get ready! LOL

·

I mean, look at the bright side. You seem like a good husband, dependable and all. Remembers mothers day, spends time with the daughter. A very adequate product and in that sense much like a quartz DW 😜

Grand Seiko on the other hand is exceptionally polished on the outside as well, so ask yourself this... you wanna compete with that guy 😉 didn't think so.

·

I'll give you $300 for the GS and take it off your hands for my wife, and you can buy her a new a DW. 😬

She likes her DW. What's the problem?

·

I enjoyed your post. It is a little like me trying to interest my wife in watches. She just wears her Apple Watch.

·

Great discussion. My wife loves that style as well. She likes a Timex but I’ve settled on a Tissot. Her 1st watch will be Swiss Made, and I don’t own one myself. Baby no.2 coming soon though so something memorable needed.

Are you sure she wouldn't just prefer a ring for memories related to baby #2? 😜

·

DWs would be fine if they cost $29.95.

·

Brilliant read! I can absolutely relate to trying and failing to persuade my wife into liking something I do!
