Nice to see another #cardivostok here.
I did buy a quartz "Seagull" ripoff, mainly for amusement, for the price of a packet of cigarettes. It turned out to be larger than advertised and easily rivals my Duro in size at least in perception if not actual measurements.
It can look reasonable on the 22mm blue croc strap borrowed from my Duro:
or maybe even the hybrid leather/canvas strap that usually graces my scubadude:
Its one redeeming feature is its accuracy which is pretty close to my Casio quartz watches despite the cheap Chinese Sonoy brand movement. It is accurate as long as you can set the time correctly, there is about a third of a turn of freeplay in the crown when I try to adjust it. Pushing the crown in and keeping the set time takes a few attempts.
A Youtuber was less kind in his 6 minute video review:
I suspect a repainted dial at least. Considering the care the rest of the watch was made with, the printing looks a bit imprecise. Also, the balance wheel looks a bit modern for a 1953. Compare with my Pobeda:
My only GMT is a Vostok 650539. It gets worn at least a few times a week. Sometimes I might swap the straps for a 40 year old Seiko bracelet. It would be nice if my bracelets had quick release springbars.
When the wardrobe is appropriate, a black 2 piece zulu can do the job.
An interesting piece. Designed at a time when the digital watch designers were pushing the limits of what a watch could do and market research be damned. No doubt this piece might have been a hit in the astronomy community but that is a niche market. It would be as useful to me as my GMT, as in not very, but the nifty factor is undeniable.
The extensive manual wind Komandirskie range is certainly brass, hence their low-ish price.
From what I see, any current production Vostok with a 200 metre WR or more is stainless cased, maybe not the best stainless as my 650539 GMT is claimed to be 304C stainless, but at least it is some sort of stainless.
There are some varieties like some of the women's Amphibian range that only go to 100 metres WR and are brass cased.
I have posted a 37 minute Youtube vid here that shows the production process. They are quite proud of the extent of their in-house manufacture, even the plastic boxes the watches ship in are molded on-site.
