Brands that have such a stupid name and/or logo you don't even wanna look at them

Do you know a brand that has such a stupid name and/or logo that you don't even wanna look at them even if they seem to make good watches?

For me Addiesdive is one of them.

I can't even figure out what that name is supposed to mean but that logo... it just screams diving and swimming and all that it's hilarious and ugly in my opinion ๐Ÿ˜…

What do you think?

What brand makes you scratch your head?

Iโ€™ve long said that many of the Chinese brand names look like someone pulled random Scrabble letters from the bag. A quick scan of Amazon for example offers such gems as โ€œNBONALโ€, โ€œCRRJUโ€, โ€œLYMFHCHโ€, and โ€œQBAIZIโ€.

Are they really trying to sell something that to pronounce, sounds like a sneeze with a mouth full of potato chips?

Same complaint about the same brand. I would have bought this slick sand dune dressy piece in a heartbeat months ago if it wasn't for the all-caps brand name and hideous half-diving equipment half-pirates logo ruining the dial. And these clowns don't even offer a sterile dial option! Completely wasting a good design idea. ๐Ÿ™„

Image

The Steeldive logo is just as bad and probably comes from the same place, based on how similar they are.

Both of them are excellent value brands from a finishing per dollar standpoint. Both of them are unwearable because of their hideous logo. It's a real shame.

The font and the wrong spelling kill me.

A lot of microbrands have naff names, or big brands with someone's full name.

Christopher Ward is a good example!

Personally, I don't like the logo of orient on the dial. Imo this logo would look better on a whisky brand.

Yup, tho much better with the new logo. There's also Maurice Lacroix (however that's spelled ๐Ÿคฃ) Richard LeGrand , & quite a few others.

All seems a bit egotistical to me

I suspect most don't like "Tactical Frog", but I need one in my collection to sit next to my Geckotas and make weird little amphibian watch babies!

ยท

It has always been thus. 80 years ago the Swiss named things in a manner that resembled letter salad. Type "Onsa", "Semag", "Darwil", "Omax", or "Eloga" into eBay and behold the glory of the old way.

ยท

I really dislike the "Orient" name and logo. Christopher Ward did a smart thing by removing their name and going with a logo on their watches.

There are a few more names that are just names... nothing good or bad, I just don't care for them... like Nivada Grenchen, Bell & Ross and random people's full names

AVI-8 just destroys me. Part of a thread from a long time ago on names: https://www.watchcrunch.com/complication/posts/what-s-in-a-name-2-17107

I also loathe modern watch companies with the name of a businessman on the dial, not even a watch maker. Talk about hubris. Looking at you Dan Henry, Christopher Ward, and others. Just cringey.

Ok Shinola, old slang for shit. But, it's a good watch

You nailed this one. I want to support the company but just can't because of the absolutely absurd name they use.

Agree. The Orient logo doesn't do it for me.

ยท

The most stupid names and logos usually come from โ€žbrandsโ€œ that only copy known ones.

Probably to just pull the plug if sued, rearrange and add or substract new letters and go at it againโ€ฆ

ยท

โ€œAddieโ€ is a nickname for Addison. I have a niece with that name. A โ€œdiverโ€ (100m) with that namesake is best I can figure ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Do Geckotas come with lizard straps standard?

This defense of Qbaizi watches by genx is pretty excellent. Satire of the finest order . . . I . . . think??

What's the problem here? First, the design is ingenious and stylish. Second, this particular T. Wipe model has only the name, and NOT the logo on the dial.

Bulova always sounded as a russian name for me. Not sure why!

You're close. Bulova is named for its founder Joseph Bulova, who was born in Czechoslovakia.

This is an instance where researching the name brings up an interesting result - that is, Joseph Bulova was a real guy and the watches don't have some made-up name conceived by committees or marketers.

We can research all the names we want. Some names may mean absolutely nothing. And some names may have stories behind them, but just because there really is a story doesn't mean that story is always going to be interesting.

Hublot. What else is there to say? Good luck

Hublot is French for Porthole. The design of the MDM Geneve was that of a ships porthole. Carlo Crocco was an avid sailorโ€ฆ

I contacted the TW Company.

Q: What's with the blue dial?

A: The brown one sold out.

I've said it before, probably even on this thread, but it used to be Christopher Ward until they changed their logo to the dueling Swiss flags.

The new logo is a bit like Marmite; loved or hated. I like it.

I feel like they might have a name change coming in the next 10 years as they continue to move upmarket. Christopher Ward brings memories of Montgomery Ward, what was once a big retailer; but now, not so much.

Now though, the only brands I typically don't look at are the Chinese brands with tossed letter salad names

Agreed about Christopher Ward. I've seen other brands with names too, like Pablo Raez, Michael Kors, Daniel Wellington...they sound like cheap fashion brands you'd find in Kohl's or JCPenney.

The difference is that Christopher Ward makes good watches. It's smart they removed the name because 99.999999% of the population would have no idea who or what Christopher Ward is anyway, so it's not like it's a selling point. And as far as the new logo...meh. Maybe I'm just being crotchety at the moment...
