What's in a name?
Let me preference this by saying when it comes to musical groups, if a band has a stupid name, I don't even give them a second listen. They could have the greatest back catalogue in the world, but if the name - which I guess is part of the overall vibe, and image - isn't "right" for me... they're toast. I refuse to get into them.
Similarly, watch brands. And one such example popped up on my Facebook tonight. I'm a bit of a military buff, so the algorithm is always pushing "AVI-8" at me. I like what I see, in some ways, but the name... ugh... it reminds me of leetspeak, like we're still in the 1990s and the Internet is new and we're all typing stupid words.
Can you look past names or, like me, if you looked down and saw leetspeak on your watch dial like, "AVI-8" or some other name that just felt all wrong, there's no way you could wear the watch, even if you liked other aspects of it?
I've loved watches all my life, going back to the 1980s. Current watchbox: Seiko, Bulova, and Casio.
As a fan of Umphrey's McGee I can overlook a name.

Which is Italian for shark... I mean if we are just going to dismiss languages entirely then that’s one thing, but an Italian dive watch named after a shark in its native language, that’s a low bar for entry to the haters club.

My favourite of which is Hohnx, which I always imagine is pronounced “honks”, as in how the goose would say “Hohnx” in its mother tongue.

Meh. I just don’t like the word. Not just that but also the way they print their name with an unbalanced, offset logo under the 12:00 plus they print their name again inside a shark logo with another crown logo above the shark logo at the 6:00. One name and logo per dial, please. I know why they do that. I still don’t like it.
There’s plenty of Italian brands I would buy. I own a Bvlgari, the spelling of which also triggers me to some extent. LOL.
Now that I think about it, I probably wouldn’t be very interested Shark brand watches in English either
I can look past a name I don't care for... If they leave it off the dial.
I have two Islanders & they are from before they started putting the name on the dial (just the logo). "Islander" is an appropriate name on a dive each, but I don't think it fits on a dress or field watch.
I also have two Richard LeGrand watches that I really like but they are models with the RLG logo and not the full name.
I like the Dan Henry 1975 but haven't bought one yet because of the full text name on the dial. If it was just a logo, I would already have one.
I can look past a name as well, I try not to judge a book from its cover.
