How Important Is Versatility to You?

How important is versatility in your watches to you? Do you need each watch to be a GADA watch? Or are you someone who likes to have a different watch for every situation? Or are you like me, somewhat in between? I like watches that can be worn from the office to the outdoors, but I also like both dress watches and tool watches. What about you?

They are tools for situations and picked accordingly.

GADA for me.

Could easily end up with a watch box full of black dial divers, so I have to check myself 😂

·

At minimum, all my watches need to be able to go for a worry free dip in the ocean.

Seems to me that a good number of members will use tool / specific function watches in a variety of situations. In other words, they make it a GADA, whether or not that watch is built to fulfill that role or is deemed suitable in all settings. It’s all personal preference. That’s cool with me.

I think the only thing that's makes a watch a GADA watch is the waterproofing, which is good to have but I believe is overrated. I'm around water a lot but I'm not jumping into the ocean everyday or getting pushed into the pool. Most days the closest I'll get to getting my watch wet is in the shower or doing dishes. So I feel as long as the watch is working for me at the time it's a GADA watch regardless of the waterproofing.

I want something that I think looks good for the event/situation it's being worn, doesn't matter if it's a GADA or designed for the situation.

·

I used to be a 1 watch 1 use but I realized I am more of a cyclic enthousiast.

I started with dress watches 10 years ago but now I'm moving towards a more sport/GADA idea of what is the perfect/everyday watch. I tend to minimize or keep my collection reasonable.

So i'm in between !

The other key factor for GADA or not is case material. I love 18k gold but it scratches like butter compared to stainless steel.

With vintage watches, which is what I mostly wear, pretty much nothing is GADA. Very few have reliable water resistance.

Even the watches which where water resistant when they were designed aren't these days because the gaskets and crystals to match the exact original spec are hard to come by.

·

I enjoy having a watch for any occasion but I also love versatility in my pieces!

·

If you want to match outfits you're already talking about multiple watches. I could probably make do with 3 to 5 watches. But where is the fun in that? 😁

I don't have a gold watch. However, I agree that gold scratches easier than SS. I guess the point I was trying make is that the watch I have on regardless of the waterproofing, materials (gold), acrylic crystal, vintage or whatever else the watch is or has. Will have to work if I'm wearing it. I don't live in fear of a scratches, rain, theft or whatever else happens. I simply wear my watch.

Hopefully when I pick a watch in the morning I make a good choice and pick a watch that can handle the day. If not I make it work.

Agreed.

On the occasions where I have the "wrong watch" on for a particular activity, I take it off and put it somewhere safe and then put it back on once said activity's finished.

E.g. Unanticipated swim, impromptu diy, caught out in a thunderstorm etc

That's how it should be done.

I like the idea of having at least one GADA watch, but my favorite watches tend to be those that don't fall into that category.

·

I probably have closer to a 50/50 split myself.

·

I think it depends on how many watches you own

In a small watch collection you will need pretty versatile pieces, but a lager collection can have some wacky fun pieces, simply because you have more sensible stuff to fall back on

I own enough versatile pieces that if I wanted to expand my collection I'd go for something wackier though atm I'm happy where I am and would like to downsize eventually

·

I essentially want all my watches to do the same thing. Forget variety, choose similarity!

·

Not really. Im a watch nerd and have one or two for each occasion

To me, this hobby is about variety, versatility and choices for every mood, every situation, every event - which is why I don’t intend on stopping. My wife vehemently begs to differ …. 🤙😂❤️

Yes, I get the "how many do you actually need?" from my wife frequently. 🤣

·

I don't wear watches to match my clothes. I wear them to match my mood. And also for functionality; any watch I take swimming needs at least 100m WR rating. Any watch I wear for yardwork has to have a shock-resistant crystal. Etc.

·

Versatility is very important for me! I want to be able to wear most, if not all, of my watches in about any scenario or setting. I wear all of my core collection of 9 watches to work, social settings, errands. Several I wear in suits. All are sporty to some extent and cover most of the bases for me. I have another set that cover yard work and outdoor activities.

·

Any watch is a GADA when you realise that nobody even notices what watch you are wearing! I generally don't wear a dress watch to the beach or an Invicta with a suit, but that's mostly the extent of it. I have found that I have even been leaning away from the more 'versatile' watches, simply because I find that they sacrifice character by trying to do a lot of different things simultaneously. If I had just one watch, or a couple of watches, then I would want a GADA watch, but the closest that I come right now is a watch with decent WR and good lume and not too expensive. That's probably 75% of my collection, but with those three things I will happily wear it most days. I would rather have a watch that wasn't exactly fitted to the current situation but that made me smile or had that spark that made it different.
