Your "why is there no hype?" Watch

What watch confuses you because it isn't hype? The watch you are confused why more people don't love or gets more attention?

For me, it's the baume et mercier riviera. 42mm or 39mm, 5 day power reserve, cosc certified, intrvrated bracelet design with heritage, and with a translucent sapphire dial at a under 5k?

Why isn't this a bigger deal?

What watch makes you wonder why the watch world isn't obsessed?

Definitely a cool watch this brand just does not get a lot of attention they probably deserve

B&M is considered by a lot of people as the gateway to Luxury Watches. Or even just a really good watch slightly below luxury. Tag falls into this category too (for now). So IMHO that perception is what keeps them from garnering the real “hype”.

Also since they are part of the big watch brands label, they also don’t get “micro” hype. But slap a Christopher Ward logo (and limit it to 1500 pieces) on that watch (Riviera) and that thing would be the hype watch of the year.

·

One last thing… B&M also has a bunch of quartz versions of their autos. So that kind of kills momentum too. You’re not investing in their tech when someone has a quartz clone right next to you.

·

I absolutely love these rivieras, long may they remain low hype!

·

Why no hype? One reason might be the 4300 Euro price tag 😮

·

Had a chance to see this the other day at a watch shop and I have to say the black dial is stunning. I too, am quite surprised that it hasn't picked up that much hype for what it brings to the table.

The 5 day power reserve is really something special and does deserve more attention. The dial as well is great, slightly textured with the ability to see the movement behind it.

I would like to own this watch someday.

Harry winston watches, especially the premier excenter line.

There is no mention at all of harry winston watches on this app. Search it up and hairy wrist pops up 🤣.

Unique designs, cool complications, not super expensive but no one is talking about them. I guess since most of their new catalogs are not as interesting.

For a watch with the same movement as an 11,000 Euro IWC.

Haha. Hairy wrist does come up. So does my profile!

·

Great watch brand , almost bought this exact watch, what put me off is the fact that I found one heavily discounted and asked myself why ?

Not totally put off, but will wait a while and see what the price does.

·

Never ever will something like this get on my wrist. There is not a single integrated bracelet sports watch that I would give more than a 6 out of 10 in terms of design, and this is a 4 in my eyes.

·

Appreciate the moments when a watch has no hype. No hype means room for negotiations 😎

·

I think it's a wonderful watch!! Just not a brand that's as discussed or well known. Hopefully, watch enthusiasts like us can change that opinion in the future!

·

The Montblanc Iced Sea, particularly the dial and the 500 hour MB testing certificate. The dial of this watch gets me every time I wear it. Could spend hours looking at the texture in the sun. Pictures will never do the layers justice.

I'd like to think that people's tastes and preferences are individual. Sure, they are impacted by what others think/say, but at the end of the day, a collector should buy for themselves.

TL:DR - Don't really care about hype or why others don't see a watch, like I do.

·

I like B&M because you don't see much of them. Cool watch brand, IMO. 👍

That is a cool looking watch!

I alerted my multi brand ad last summer after reading about a B&M Riviera fitted with a perpetual calendar moonphase limited to 50 worldwide, after I placed an order for grey dial 5 day Baumatic Moonphase, he found one last watch in the American distribution centre but could not promise delivery for at least a few months. G knows that I do not follow what is hyped or in demand, that I have been collecting watches for over 40 years but he nevertheless wondered about my loyalty to B&M? I received the Baumatic in October but may be SOL with the perpetual, only 1 Riviera perpetual was allocated to his family’s business, another customer put in the request ahead of mine. Another B&M ad does not expect to receive a single one since the watches were sold out once announced. Watch would have cost just south of 30k cad with a 13% tax so might have been a bit of a financial stretch, I assume 30k wasn’t a big deal to the other customer. Does it really matter that a watch is hyped or do we even care how a certain watch is regarded by others?

The 42mm is definitely on my radar for a future purchase. Likely the brown transparent dial model.

My store actually sells this watch. I’ve been working in the watch industry as a sales rep for about 4 months now, this is my experience with Baumé and Mercier.

For context, my store sells 6 brands, Tag Heuer, Tissot, Longines, Rado, Edox and Baumé and Mercier. Our top sellers ranked is Tissot, Longines, Tag Heuer/Rado. Baumé is really low.

From my time there, I’ve pulled out a Baumé less than 20-30 times, and only 1/10 times was a customer genuinely interested in one. I think my store only sold a total of 2-3 pieces throughout that time frame and they were the Classima Chronograph, a Hampton, and another basic Classima.

Props to Baumé to actually designing their own in house movement, and the Baumatic is truly a workhorse of a movement with amazing accuracy and 5 day power reserve, and it truly does unique designs compared to its Swatch competitors, and that’s the problem, the designs though unique (the Reviria) is really a love it or hate it, and most people don’t like their version of the integrated bracelets. The Hampton just looks like a cheap Cartier tank (and most people rather buy a Longines Dolce Vita at that price) and the Classima and Clifton just looks like a watch with no real brand identity.

As I said, aside from the Rivera, B&M does not have a strong marketing or history, they didn’t bring watches to space, they weren’t fighting the Germans in WW2, they didn’t went down to the deepest depths of the ocean nor went to space, they just look, like a well made watch, but for the price they are asking for, people expect more.

That’s my take why B&M can’t compete with mid tier brands like Tag, Longines, hell even Rado. They are great watches, just public doesn’t care about them.

Breguet! One of the richest histories in the watch world yet waaaaaay cheaper in grey market vs retail. Breguet tradition is quite a cool f'n watch that is called tradition because it harls back to pocket watch days. It's more than 50% off of retail! Yes retail price is crazy high but that's a sick discount.

Image

The Calendrier is 35% off retail too. These are heavily discounted for hand turned guilloché dials, precious metal, classic design.

The list of solid slept on watches stretches from here to Grant's Tomb. Very finicky hobby to say the least.
