For me, the dial on the 42 just seems too spaced out and makes the proportions seems not as desirable to my eye (regardless of wrist size, which for reference I think your wrist easily accommodates either and looks good on both strap and bracelet I just think 39 does the dial more justice)
I'd say 39mm but it all come down to comfort. Tough choice. But the answer lies with you and which piece is more comfortable.
I think both look absolutely fine on you. So it must come down to which one is most comfortable and probably comes to mind first when you think of them?
Both are fine depending on the style you like but this particular 42mm is about the max size (at this lug to lug) for your wrist that doesn't look too big.

My wrist is only slightly smaller than yours and I think the 42 works great. I too like a larger watch since i've been wearing my 42mm Garmin GPS watch for years
