In honor to the current micro brand tournament taken place in here, I decided to share one of my favorite and preferred micro brands... Islander.

So much respect for Marc…he’s literally the only person who I’ve ever seen critique their own watches. Respect!

Definitely love supporting Marc.

You won't regret it. Great quality, and great price... Even better price if you buy a used one (like I did). 😎👍

Okay - this might upset a few people.

Let me first say that I like what Marc is doing and his range of watches. But - after shipping and import duties - his watches are a lot pricier when they land here.

I debated long and hard and eventually bought one (at full price). For the landed price I was quite disappointed and fairly quickly moved it on. The design elements and the specs were there but the finishing and execution especially to those very minor details e.g. tolerances, etc. just wasn’t that great (relative to other equally or more affordable micro brands).

But I have at least had first hand experience and - if I was in the US - I could see these appealing as being much better value.

I do have an Islander bracelet for one of my main brand watches and that is great and certainly a significant upgrade (a little pricey again landed but when the product is very good and ahead of other options out there I am okay with that).

So I do follow what he’s up to as he is pretty could at creating appealing content and products for the community but - not being in the US - dials his Islander proposition back a big notch for me.

Perhaps at deep sale prices things might change but I was very disappointed so don’t think I would buy again.

The more I hang out here, the more I realize what a nightmare Europe must be when ordering from another country. The taxes seem draconian.

Here in the States, they do have a very attractractive price point. Both my wife and I love the Islanders we have.

Here the taxes are levied on the price paid inclusive of shipping and then the courier company charges an admin fee for collecting the taxes.

So a slightly simplified example…

$300 watch $35 shipping

Import duties c. 20% plus an admin fee on top adds c.$80

So the $300 watch is now $415 and then your cc company stings you with a lousy FX rate and a foreign currency transaction fee …

V painful all round.

It certainly ramps up the focus before pulling the trigger - maybe that’s a good thing on reflection.

Thanks for the explanation. Governments always have their hands out. 😉

That’s very unfortunate shipping outside of US. Sry for that mate. I got my Port Jeff Travelers GMT for low $500 (with the coupons that Marc gives in emails plus tax).

That’s what I see for most affordable watches with Miyota 9075 automatic GMT movement. But if you add $200 on top, now that’s a hard sell.

All my other Islander are ~$300.

To his credit Marc did try some sort of split the difference thing a while back before I purchased but he stopped it as he said it was too much hassle/complexity and didn’t work as he intended it to.

Fair enough that he tried.

I think this issue will explain why for a lot of the affordable micro brands you’ll see often strong supporters in country and more muted input from those elsewhere (other than in no tax locations).

I do see a few brands around in pre-owned sales but you can see fairly clearly that what they sell for and what the owner would like to recover are often quite far apart.
