Timex S1 Automatic

I occasionally get emails from Timex regarding sales, etc. I haven't checked out their collections in quite a while, so I decided tot take a look. I noticed this automatic in the lineup and the specs seem to be pretty damn good, considering what Timex has put out so far.

I am assuming it uses a Miyota 9015, as the case back reads 4 Hz. Not sure how I feel about the $450 asking price, but damn if it's not a nice looking watch. Honestly, if the dial said "Tissot" or a nother entry level Swiss brand, I'd completely believe it. What's everyone else's thoughts on this?

Nice dress watch. You bring up a good point. Someone should photoshop various brand names over the dial and ask people what they would pay. It would make for an interesting study.

·

Wow, that's a good idea. I have the Adobe CC suite on my office computer so I may give that a try.

·

One of my favourite timex. I believe this one is giorgio galli timex, it has a interesting signature case and you can see one jewel on the dial. @benswatchclub made a review about this model, you should check the review if you re gonna pull the trigger

·

It is a very good watch - probably the best Timex. Just watch out for QC issues 👍 (or customer service problems)

I have one and absolutely love it. The movement is a Miyota 9039.

I love so many things on this watch, starting with the incredible case and beautiful sunburst dial. A real strap monster, good accuracy and nice domed sapphire. the polished indices reflects every light it catches and the crown has a beautiful design

The only cons is that the rotor is noisy. And personnally I would have love to have 100m WR. But great everyday watch, way more versatile than it looks.

WHAT??!!! A comment from the great Ben Arthur! Thanks, man. That really makes my day. Is this the watch you emailed back and forth with Timex about an issue with the watch? I remember seeing that one a while back. Keep up the awesome work! Cheers!

By far the most upscale watch Timex makes, but it comes with a pricetag to match.

Those cutaway lugs are beautiful. The single jewel on the front is a nice touch. Great hands shape. Perfect subtle dial with a deep, rich blue dial. Under $500? It's a pretty great watch. Timex should take a page out of the Seiko playbook and have a second tier of watches slightly above their entry level offerings. Grand Timex or TimeXr. or something. Better finishes, quality movements, still affordable but a step above. They obviously have the ability. I'd buy one.

“Brands” always gets the first notice: perhaps for prestige or just a personal reward (e.g., I’m rewarding myself, soon, with a…).

I also look at brands, history, how they look on me, if they will be easy to ‘wear’ with my kind of clothes, if they serve a purpose other than to be recognize

and of course, the prize: can I justify it to me?

Ultimately: will it make me happy wearing it, or just looking at it in my box?

That would be interesting and I have thought about that myself, I think Timex has always been the bottom tier it would be hard for people to see them as a luxury brand watch. They do make watches for Timex Group Luxury Division, based in Switzerland, is part of Timex Group is a privately-held company headquartered in Middlebury, Connecticut with multiple operating units and over 3,000 employees worldwide. As one of the largest watch makers in the world, Timex Group companies produce watches under a number of world class brands, including Timex, adidas, Furla, Gc, Guess, Missoni, Nautica, Salvatore Ferragamo, Philipp Plein, Plein Sport, Ted Baker and Versace..

Indeed it is a beautiful watch, but once you start going into that price range, you can get a Bulova, or something with a better reputation for watch people.

Exactly. But the movement on its own is pretty darn good. I do agree that Timex doesn't possess the same cachet as the more proven marks. They have to start somewhere, though, and if they follow their current trajectory, in five, 10, 15 years they might improve considerably on their reputation. Even their classic mechanical watches from 50-60 years ago were trash at the time. Affordable to the common man and robust, but there's a reason why you don't see collectors clamoring for vintage Timex pieces. I'm sure most people on these forums have seen the Wonders of Watchdom video on this subject, but it's well done and very information rich.

Yes, this is a great video and I can attest the Timex watches (especially their automatics) are not the ones from years ago. The M79 is my daily beater and is tough as nails.

What QC issues? I haven’t looked up reviews. Not that I’d buy it. I would but that’s just $500 more I’d have to save to get the 3 watches I “need” to finish my collection and put an end to this obsession. Lol.

I really like the lugs on that Timex. Have not seen their like before.

·

I could imagine that it would be difficult for the everyday consumer to convince themselves to get this based on branding when something from Tissot (the PRX) exists in a very similar price range, and that carries the name on the dial which many people do like.

Personally I like where Timex is headed with these watches. Just like Citizen with "The Citizen". Timex knows watches, so why not make a higher price point product.

Yeah, I think if I get an automatic Timex, it's going to be a vintage model. 👍

Lol. To which you can easily attest to.

I was looking at this the other day. It really is a very distinctive watch, with those hollowed out lugs, and the drilled minute markers. I would definitely be interested, especially in 38mm - so nice to see a proper size. I see the point about it being £400 for a Timex - a budget brand. It's definitely nice though. Should we buy what we like, or be swayed by branding? It's an age old question.
