Dropping a luxury watch

This weekend I was playing with straps on some of my fancy watches.. this morning I decided to wear my Moonphase Speedy. Was rushing out of the car and the leather strap comes off and watch dropped on the road.. ๐Ÿ’”

Careful inspection and no scratches on the face the dial looks ๐Ÿ‘ BUT there was a big scar on the lug.. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Cursing myself for picking this watch this morning. ๐Ÿคฌ

I should have checked and then double checked after changing the strap. โœ…โœ…

I donโ€™t wear it ever for work but today for some reason i picked this up..๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป

Part of me wants to keep this watch back in vault and never wear it again to do more damage. Thousand thoughts and what ifs.

Have you dropped your most priced possession and what do you do after that?

Scratches are part of your watches history. It can be fixed also. Donโ€™t stop wearing it! Itโ€™s too nice.

ยท

Yeah, a Martian did it when doing battle on the Moon, no sweat. Keep it as is.

ยท

Claim it happened when you took a hit in a bar fight. Makes you look dangerous. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

ยท

These scars are just part of your memories. Have fun wearing this nice watch and donโ€™t ever keep it stowed away. A watch is to be worn and enjoyed , not stored and protected. โค๏ธ

Thank you.. Still in a little state of shock but will get over it in some days.. i think.. This was a gift from my wife..

ยท

Nah man, you got the first dent, now you donโ€™t have to worry and you can wear it all the time.

Also, at least it is on the โ€œbottomโ€ of the watch and wonโ€™t be staring back up at you every time you look at it, will be much easier to come to terms with I bet, rather than a cracked crystal or broken/ bent pusher or whatever.

ยท

Next servicing, have them buff it.

Whats the point of a something you strap to your body for telling the time if it sits in the safe all day?

ยท

Those are battle scars brother! Rock it hard ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿฝ

ยท

Oh man, sorry to hear that. Sounds like everything else is fine and that movement is working properly. That rough edge is pretty gnarly though.

It's a beautiful watch. Wear it proudly.๐Ÿ‘

ยท

Just get it buffed out..all will be good..Enjoy the hobby

ยท

This is why whenever I get a new watch, I open the package and immediately dump the contents onto concrete, that way I donโ€™t have to worry about when the first accident is coming. Just get it straight out of the way and get to enjoying.

Jk of course

Though I did drop my SRPD onto concrete after like a week or two of ownership and it stopped running lol.

ยท

I would get a buffing kit and ensure that the scrape (jagged edges) doesnโ€™t accidentally cut (or take it to a watch jeweler). Other than that, Iโ€™d continue to wear it proudly. Someone once told me: To never get worn is the worse thing that can happen to a watch.

ยท

Something similar happened with my Black Bay 58. While changing at the pool locker after a swim, it slipped out of my jeans pocket, causing the watch to hit the floor. Thereโ€™s a small dent on the back of the watchcase โ€“ not noticeable when worn, but it left me stunned. I was worried about it losing its waterproof quality, but after taking a risk in the ocean, it proved still watertight. Your watch being a chronograph, water isnโ€™t your concern.

Iโ€™ve come to accept the minor imperfection, wearing it proudly like a battle scar, as many have pointed out we should. Itโ€™s a big relief that the movement, crystal, and dial are intact. Let this be a reminder to handle with care in the future. Wear it with pride, brother! Now that it lost its resale value, itโ€™s even more your watch and your watch only. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‰

ยท

No one gets out alive. If it were me, after launching a fusillade of invective and profanity, and self-castigation, I'd gently buff any rough edges then keep it as is. If you were thinking of selling in the future, I'd take it to a professional to have that buffed out.

ยท

If it bothers you this much and you risk not wearing/enjoying it in the future because of this incident, you can always get the lug repolished and back to almost-new. Don't stress over something that can be fixed with money! It's just stuff!

I have been looking at the scratched part on the watch the entire day.. I too wear long sleeves when I wear fancy watches in an off chance they will leave my hand or bump into something.. today of all days I was about to put my jacket on and the watch went flying off 8 feet before it hit the asphalt road..

I have other watches that I handle roughly but this one was a special and was caring for it too much.. will be a little care free now that it is scratched..

Good mindset! I bought my GS 413 used/ pre scratched, even though the scratches were minor, it made me feel very worry free about wearing it all the time - who cares if I'm adding a few more scratches! It's a no sell watch so will keep wearing it boldly

ยท

Yeah just another story to tell no biggie

ยท

Decide if you're going to embrace it as a battle scar, or if you will get it fixed - sooner or later.

ยท

polish it and put it on sale

I guess I was too attached to my watch due to the significance of it.. wife doesnโ€™t care about watches but went out of her way to get me this one.. it was more of a shock yesterday.. I have kept the Watch away for now.. PTSD

ยท

Take it to get laser welded and re polished, it will be fine.

I feel your pain my friend. Give your self time to recover from the PTSD and self-loathing and remind yourself to be more careful...

And once you feel better about it, wear it once again! Shamelessly and confidently (but more carefully)! The scars give it character and personality (as many in this thread have pointed out). And you can always have it serviced the next time!

So your wife gave this to you as a gift? It took a little beating, but it keeps going on right? All the more reason to keep wearing it! A reminder of the love between you and the missus!

The beautiful thing about these watches is that they're quality products made to last for a long time (some would say they can last even longer then us)!

I dropped my vintage speedy in basically the same way. Live and learn for the future for sure. Send the watch in to get touched up and continue enjoying it. If the case touchup isn't satisfactory then you could probably send it to Omega for a new case. Either way don't let it spoil your mojo.

Thinking of waiting till the watch is ready for the service.. I will show it during meetup in Dec..

Forms part of the battle scars. If it bothers you too much, get it buffed and polished. Either way, joys and perils of being a watch nerd.
