When is Big too BIG!?

So an unexpected and very welcome father's day present! My observant wife had noted my recent interest in the Timex Expedition Grid Shock so suggested the offspring purchase it for me.

I'm very happy! Strongly built with all the necessary functions, indiglo and 100m of water resistance.

The elephant in the room is, no pun intended, it is bloody massive!

It dwarfs my existing casios and is certainly bigger than all the g shocks in particular the squares which I really like. I've never owned a Timex before do that's another box ticked.

So I'm interested on your take on watch size? When is big too big?

My wrist size is a little over 7 inches for reference..

Interesting it’s wide but that doesn’t  bother me like when the large lug to lug hangs over the wrist on some watches.

·

I've only been wearing it a couple of hours but it seems comfortable so far. It's a big boy though! I wear reading glasses so the big display is a positive for me. Seems to have positive reviews from what I have seen and tough enough for my purposes. Never had a timex before and I'm after one of their mechanicals at some point.

·

that's nothing compared to this one which I assume around 60mm+ width lol 🤣🤣

I think it's a positive bold, in-your-face beast. If there's any watch that will start a conversation with others...it's that grand Expedition sitting on your wrist. Wear it out-and-about and have some fun! Feel like you're Corporal Hicks killing some baddies like in Aliens!

·

It's only too big if it's uncomfortable. 😁 Looks cool!

·

True! Comfortable thus far but I haven't run or swum with it yet!

Yep and certainly big on bad taste!

75mm vs 36mm on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. 75 is borderline too big. LOL 😂

·

when you have to use a whole bottle of lube

talking about watches of course

Blimey! Yes borderline!

Rock-it-like-you-stole-it!

·

I would absolutely wear that badass watch. Looks like you could call down the Hammer of Dawn with that bad boy.

I would say 91mm is definitely too big! 😂

Seriously, my largest watch is my Casio Pro Trek PRW2500, and it is borderline too big for my taste.

Image

It is just over 50mm, so it is the same size as the Expedition Grid.

·

It's big for sure. Given with love.  A statemen piec .  Own it when you wear it !

Yep that's a big boy too and probably harder to wear? The Expedition seems to be easier to wear than it looks as the lug to lug is not too bad ( I haven't measured it yet. Its obviously very wide but that sits OK on the wrist so far.

·

I think it looks cool, you're like a space marine. "Star Command come in!"

Its lug-to-lug isn't too bad; 53mm. It is just wearable for me. If it was any bigger it would be too big. I did notice the smaller lug-to-lug on the Expedition Grid. I am actually looking at an Urban Command as well.

Yep I was looking at that too. Wore the grid shock on a run this morning and had no issues. Substantial yet comfortable!

How is the legibility in sunlight?  I have some really cheap reverse / negative LCD watches, and they are virtually impossible to read outside.

@TimexBadger , what are your thoughts on this?

Legibility seems pretty good so far. Wore it on a run 8n the forest in bright sunlight. Sometimes had to angle it to see it in direct bright sunlight but no better or worse than my various casios really. I'm outdoors quite a bit so wouldn't get a negative display.

I feel the same, but not a fan of LCD watches.  I own a couple that are themed just for my collection, but don't wear them.  As far as too big, I think it really depends on your attitude.  I recently went out of my comfort zone and bought the Essex street model which is 44 mm.  I don't know if I like it yet, but there is something enjoyable about wearing a large watch that you feel on your wrist.  Oddly enough it's very comfortable.  The one plus with the Essex Street is at my age, it's a pleasure to read.  It doesn't come with indiglo feature, but has decent lume for a Timex and because of its size it's so easy to read.  I also like it because it is referred to as the poor man's Royal Oak.  Here it is:

I don't think it looks too big.  Sometimes you need a bad ass watch and this definitely fits that bill.  I recently bought my largest Timex and still on the fence about it.  I put the picture below in response to timegeek.  Still getting used to a large watch, but I think it's starting to grow on me.  Enjoy it!!

·

I got a 6 1/4 wrist. According to the internet I'm supposed to wear watches between 39mm-42mm. I got a 47mm g shock and I love wearing it

Image

On the smaller end, I have a timex expedition field watch that's a 36mm and I love wearing it too

Image

But I've also tried on a fossil watch once that I was thinking of buying but it was way too big (50mm) and I decided not to buy it.

I don't agree with any hard and fast rules really. If you like it then wear it. I'm wearing the Grid Shock to work and despite its width I'm happy with the comfort and weight. The strap is very wide but doesn't rub..

I'm the same thing. I wear what I like as well and i dont go off of any specific size. But if it's way to big and the watch looks out of place then that's where I draw the line. Btw you got a really nice digital collection there. Been thinking of getting that dw290 myself.

·

Thanks!

Only been collecting since last October. I was aiming for mechanicals mainly but I'm picking up digital along the way.. I think it's because they are generally easier to get past my financial controller ( Mrs)! I have four casios so far, there's a Duro not in the picture. I'm planning on getting a g shock square at some point soon.

·

The dw290 is great and I have heard more than once that they are being discontinued? Only negative is the display is small so not the easiest to read.

·

From the photos the size looks perfectly acceptable based on the shape. It's a pretty cool looking watch in my opinion.

·

I've had it on the last 13hrs and to be honest despite its size it's easy to wear. You can't forget your wearing it but it's certainly comfortable. It's the new beater!

·

I once tried on one time it was Huge! my wrist too small.

·

Yep I think if you do have a smaller wrist it's not going to work!
