The age old question-What should connect my dive watch to my wrist?

I'm thinking of entering the one watch challenge this year.

To this end I have bought three new NATO straps.

This is because I have more or less decided to wear a diver for the challenge. I run most days in the forest and swim in the pool a couple of times a week so I need something robust and waterproof.

I've decided on a diver over a field watch and I've discounted my various casios as being not versatile enough for some work situations.

Plus I've discounted all the vintage seikos as not being up to the waterproof requirements obviously.

So for me a diver it is. But most of mine are on bracelets. I don't normally run wearing a bracelet watch. Hence the purchase of NATOs and rubber to give me a bit of choice and maybe a fighting chance of lasting more than a couple of days!

So my question is ( I got there eventually) ...What is the best strap option for a dive watch that you intend to wear frequently?

I'm moving towards a tropic rubber based on comfort and being easy to clean.

A NATO can cover those bases but can sometimes feel uncomfortable and may wear quickly with constant use.

A bracelet arguably looks the smartest, offers the most dressed up versatility and is also easy to clean. Yet also potentially uncomfortable if worn constantly ( even if Titanium).

I have included a picture of the strap of my Tudor PO1 just to be contrary as its on leather. Needless to say I won't be choosing that one for the challenge.

So what do the the inhabitants of The Crunch reckon for the Diver challenger?

Bracelet , NATO or Rubber?

Put it on a nato, and you’ll hate wearing it so much that you’ll quickly drop out of the contest - which is the best thing to do! Because the contest is insane!

·

The only acceptable options for a dive watch are a bracelet or rubber/silicon. Nothing else makes any sense.

Also, the Tudor P01 is more a monstrosity than a watch, so putting it on leather somehow doesn't trigger me... 😜

·

Bracelet or rubber 100% for a diver, and snap my friend I’m going diver for the challenge…….👍🏻

·

Good luck in the competition Craig. I would choose the bracelet. Looks smart in all situations and easy to clean. Last year you where allowed to swap. I started off with a bracelet but swapped to leather just to create some change.

·

I personally prefer bracelets for pretty much any watch, but rubber is exceptionally comfortable.

Is rubber smart enough for you though?

And I agree, bracelets will chaff eventually...

Give up now probably your best bet? 🤷

Yep rubber is not the smartest for work if I'm dressing up. But for everything else it makes sense. I don't think I'm going to last long!

Thank you my friend. I was hoping they would stick with the swapping out this year too! A titanium bracelet makes sense for its lightness and I could certainly wear that running. I have a phoibos in titanium and of course the pelagos but I'm not sure I want to wear my best and most expensive piece for this challenge!

I don't disagree!

The PO1 is indeed a monstrosity but it's my monstrosity and I love it!

Sail Cloth with rubber components can look quite dressy while checking off other boxes.

But also remember that you have to look at the same b****y thing for 30+ days. Wear something you enjoy👍

Yep it is definitely insane. A couple of years ago I could have stormed through it with no problem because I only ever wore one watch and I was not yet afflicted with our wonderful illness. My wife just laughs at me. She doesn't get it!!

Diver makes the most sense to me. Although I didn't mention another contender I have in my collection which is titanium on a bracelet...the Citizen Ray Mears. But still probably a diver I think!

·

That baby blue/grey NATO looks good with the Pepsi Mako.

You can always wash the NATO too then let it air dry in you wrist!

·

Rubber. End. Thank you and good night.

·

NATO, cause it can use all the support it can get. Oh wait, you’re talking about watch straps 🤪🇺🇸

·

I hate how nato loosens when wet. Every time I dive with nato a watch shifts position and flops around on my wrist.

A good, long rubber strap works best for me.

Yep I agree natos can look good in the dry but rubber does the job so much better!

I’ll add my $0.02! Yes on Diver!

And go diver on rubber! Since Divers are awesome and rubber is more comfy. Yup Ti has is better.

@Edge168n sees badass divers in business meetings on bankers and worker drone managers, so I think rules around correct watch for situations are pretty loose now.

I first thought this post was about spring bars.. and wanted to pipe in how valuable I think the fat spring bars are. If I catch the watch on an edge and a bar fails, the watch is going miles down into the briney deep, gone forever. so having the most secure connection possible is key!

In other self contradictory news: I’ve gone with my Sakura 413 for #1wc 🙄. It’s Ti and wears like nothing at all. So what if I sweat all over my leather band , so be it! (Secondary bonus: it might make me fail #1wc sooner, and extract me from hell faster)

Titanium may well be the winning card! I'm still undecided! My titanium options are Pelagos , phoibos apollo or citizen ray mears.

I would like to say I don't endorse this view of the world. Dive watches in meetings is a sign of the decay of civilization. 🤣

Or preparing for the rising sea levels brought on by global warming?

My favourite ( and most expensive) too! But I'm concerned I might get fed up with it if I wore nothing else for weeks on end?

I suspect if you're deep enough to need the WR, the watch is probably superfluous at that point 😉

·

If I'm going in the water it's a steel bracelet or rubber strap . Outside of the that, It's Whatevers!

I really like that combination! The dial and band look made for each other. What kind of strap is that? Beautiful

Harris Tweed wool my good man. Calfskin on the underside…Vario strap

I see now is I would of made it down here. Wool! Amazing 👏

It's a Vario strap

·

I would choose the Nato strap.

·

The problem is… NATO gives you two ways to wear the strap, and also added security if it gets rough and tumble. It can even look smart, if it’s say a black seatbelt, maybe with silver edging. You can also adjust it if your wrist swells, and wear it over clothing if you needed.

It’s versatile — even if it gets uncomfortable when wet sometimes, and they take a bloody age to dry.

Everything else depends on the watch I suppose.

From your selection there, and ignoring my Mako ownership bias, I’d maybe wear the Octopussy number on a NomiTTD Nato, since it looks like it covers a fair number of bases and looks like it will look different in different lights. A change of scenery becomes a change of watch. It’s also the one least likely to confuse lingering attention in somewhere shady, depending on how likely visiting such places is. A Black, soft Nato, might be wisest though, if you need to look smart for any reason in that period. If it’s really likely, go for the Kamasu or Kano. Also applies if the slightly more avant garde handset might feel too much for some days. The others are more classical in a sense.

I’ve talked myself out of my opening opinion haven’t I? Lol.

Though Octopussy’s ceramic dial will hold up better to anything rough.

I don’t envy you making the choice.

In my experience, rubber can really annoy after a while when hot or wet, especially if like me you sleep in you watch. Otherwise, your tropic is smart and rugged, albeit with less security than a NATO.
