No recommendations, but I've got to say that that's a great watch with a lot of memories. Best of luck with finding a reputable watchmaker to repair your Bulova.
I can relate to you not being a dress watch guy, as I'm the same way. I gravitate towards (very affordable) dive and tool watches. Some of the recommendations here are spot-on. I think that you might find another watch out there that doesn't feel quite as dressy, but that you could 'dress up' for a formal occasion (like the Grand Seikos @HotWatchChick69 suggested - of those, the middle one is definitely my favorite!). I'm no expert on Grand Seikos, but if you HAVE to keep one of the two that you pictured, my suggestion is the white dial, it seems more formal to me, as well as more 'neutral'.
