What’s Your Greatest Thrift Store Score?

Tonight, after a friend and I stuffed ourselves silly with Enchiladas De Mole at our favorite local Mexican restaurant, we thought we’d complete the evening by stopping to peruse the wares at Savers thrift store — where once in a happy blue moon I come across something special. And tonight had me on its VIP list for just that!

Behold, the Seiko QXH102BC chiming, dark brown solid oak Schoolhouse Clock with spun brass swinging pendulum! It has curved, convex glass crystal and selectable Westminster/Whittington chimes that activate every quarter hour. The chimes can be adjusted for volume and can be selected to chime always, during the day only, or can be turned off entirely!

This clock cost me only $10.99! I cleaned it up with some furniture polish, popped in a C Cell…and it came to life! It looks brand new! The best part is I looked it up and found that at Walmart it was sold on-line for $229.50! What a find! I’m over the moon!

I was from the 60's.  I sold it to help fund my Black Bay 58 purchase.

I’d like to know more about the mole enchiladas!

·

I've had such terrible overall luck with thrift store finds.

In no particular order.

  1. Fake Must de Cartier Tank  (in all fairness I expected this one given the price)
  2.  Fake Omega Seamaster Cosmic
  3.  Fake Elgin DeLuxe

And the most galling of all

4. Fake Seiko 5 Sportsmatic

I think I might be the worst buyer of vintage watches in the world and am super envious of you people who actual get real watches out of it.

Oh no! That’s a bad streak. That’s the thing though…proper finds are so rare. Maybe that’s why thrifting can be so rewarding.

Thought you might like to see my Seiko clock.  I took it with me from my from my NYC office when I left; there was one of these in each of the executive offices.  I was told that it dated to 1904 which was the construction date of the building, and that at one time there was a clerk assigned to wind and regulate all of them.  It has a loud tick, a pleasant chime, and a pressed glass pendulum.  It is super easy to regulate and it keeps excellent time, plus or minus one minute per week.

That's gorgeous!  Thrift shop for the win!  Thus far, never had such a find myself.

Your new old clock eminds me of a ancient Seikosha (the name before the name Seiko)  I saw on the wall of a small leather studio near Kobe.  Had to grab a shot of it while I was in there:

I found a "Jocko Willink" Timex Ironman for $2 and sold it on my ebay store for $200. Its named after a former navy seal who popularized it.
