Should I get it?

Ok guys…a few nights back @whitesalmon posted his Vario 1918 Trenchwatch. I asked him about it and he dutifully recommended it. Well…I’ve been chewing the cud hard for a few days now — 400 surplus bones is hard to come by for this old boy. But…gee-wiz the watch is a looker! Plus, I’ve been toying with getting a bund strap for a long time.

I’m thinking that 37mm white dial model with a mahogany bund is the one to suit my wrist.

Can anyone of you folks push me over the edge one way or the other??

Now…is that the 37mm? And what leaned you to the standard strap?

Yes, that’s the 37mm on my  6”/155mm wrist. I originally ordered the bund, but it was too big for my wrist, so had to go with just a leather pull through.

Gotcha. It looks damn good, though.

Thanks!! I would also give my full recommendation as well if the wrist shots weren’t hint enough. 😜

I won a Vario Trench Watch in a charity auction on a forum for $250 CAD, I've never worn it.... Take from that what you will.

Awe. Thanks for being honest. 😹

The fit and finish looks fantastic. Is the case brass or bronzed?

40mm white dial with orange lume.  I just expected this Vario to be another watch in my rotation, but I find I wear it A LOT!  I switch between the bund strap (love it), the leather strap minus the "bund" layer, and a pass through leather strap.  Not nearly as high quality a watch as my Ball Trainmaster or Alpina Seastrong.  But just a really fun watch.

I want the 37mm though. And I've got a 7' 1/4'' wrist.

Okay, I'll try harder.

Crown placement is historically inaccurate. Movement is common. Too thick. Small seconds can be awful. I don't like the V in Vario and don't even understand what it is supposed to be.

I suggest the "wait and ponder further" strategy. I don't go to Vegas or buy watches when money is tight.

When this watch was released I visited the Vario website about four times a week. It was definitely going to be my next watch. For various reasons I kept delaying the purchase. Then the fever passed.

I really like the watch. I don't regret not buying one.

That is sound advice. I woke this morning to a settling of the senses a bit. The watch will not 'poof away' after all.

If you don’t mind a manual wind, and price is an issue, why not pick up a pocket watch style piece off of Ali powered by a ST3600 series movement for under $100?

I've got three pocket watches, and mostly pull them out of the drawer every once in a while to plop one in my pocket; but, then I gaze at them for a few minutes...and end up placing them back and grab a wrist  watch instead.

Everybody’s approach to collecting is different, to some it’s like completing a page in a stamp album (every Rolex from 1970 to 1980 etc), for some a brand or type like dive or pilot, and for some resale/investment is key. Having started collecting later than many, a watch that I like and enjoy wearing is primary. I like a watch that has a connection to something or some unique or distinctive quality, limited addition, commemorative, relation to an historical event, complication, dial or case material.  Be eclectic and have fun!

The Great War has always fascinated me...down to how it started by an assassination. So, this trench watch isue is a gauge for that.

I’m with @Jeremy and @Aurelian , maybe pump the breaks if the price is raising a concern. This might be one of the problems of asking for this kind of advice on this kind of platform, you’re not gonna get a balanced response, and if you do follow the advice of the herd you might not actually have the same opinion and regret following and not listening to yourself later on. I dunno, I ain’t yur mama, do what you want.

Yeah...sound advice.

You're a man of rigid detail. Appreciated.

Yeah, I phrased that poorly since I was on my way out the door -- my bad.  What I meant to suggest was this:

Similar in looks -- just pair it with a bund-strap and you're off to the races.

I’ll get you half-way there by saying that the Vario bund strap is a great strap.

·

37mm size is great , it looks good particularly on the bund ( mahogany is a winner) the historic correctness be damned. The crown is in a very practical place. And for anyone not sure what it is , well it's a modern take on an older design of a field watch🤷🤦

I don't know how much it is but if it's in budget and you like it then buy it.

Support the guys at Vario , who's V is really nice by the way and don't buy a cheap Ali express watch and thus support the CCP. No brainer!

Only my opinion but It's a nice piece, get it.

The wife got me one for Christmas, I would highly recommend it. I never thought I'd like the Bundt but it compliments the watch so well and is very comfortable.

I think the onion crown looks at home at 4:30…and I agree with the nice logo aesthetic.

Yours is the combination I’m looking at exactly.

Love my #vario trench. Go for it!

·

I love mine! As you can see, I went for a slight different color. I don’t wear as much as I should, but it’s beautiful. I got mine on sale (8% off I think?), so that haloed a little. It completed my “war” collection which goes from WWI to Present.
