Honest opinions from honest watch people

Dear crunch colleagues,

I have been eyeing up this watch for quite some time. It’s American and as such not available to look at/try on readily in the UK. And as a microbrand it’s not cheap at all.

But online reviews seem to scream quality and I am inclined to believe. Does any have this or tried on? Thoughts?

Would anyone consider a better alternative for around the same price of about 1600 dollars?

Many Thanks 😊

Sorry can’t help you but that Monta looks stunning. I can see why you are lusting over it.

·

Sheesh $1600 is a lot of cash to throw around and it opens you up to a lot of watches. I’d look at Hamilton Intramatic Chronograph for $1575 on Jomashop.

It is a stunning watch and I remember Teddy describing it as a possible microbrand "Rolex OP" alternative. Personally would be looking at a watch from more established brand at that price point (I've been really into Sinn watches lately) but I'm sure you will be more than happy with your purchase if you end up getting it. Might be a hard one to sell if you end up parting ways with it in the future though...

I have tried on a Monta Skyquest. It felt really well made, looked fantastic and is a brand I would consider.

·

I tried their pieces at Wind-up Watch Fair last year and almost got one also. I like their brand a lot and the founders are really down to earth and friendly. I already have two watches with Sellita movements so ultimately decided against getting one but still dream of the Noble and Triumph sometimes. They have regulated their Sellita movements I understand so it's a nice to have this thoughtful touch included.

I have the pink dial variant of this watch. I love everything about it. It’s the second most worn watch in my 12 watch collection behind only my Omega Aqua Terra. My wrist is 6.75” for reference, about 17cm.

The bracelet is excellent quality with great easy micro adjust. I think the bracelet itself is worth $600 easy

·

Cool. Thanks guys!

·

Watch looks ok, but be aware you'll get shafted on tax getting stuff from America.

Good luck mate 🤞🏻

Hi,

I think it is very good looking watch. And so far I just heard just good things over this brand.

Probably it is difficult to sale it later but if you really in love and looking again and again after this one I would mind. Because if you like to keep the watch you don’t have think about selling the watch. Instead you have to think over maintaining the watch.

I bought a years ago a watch from a brand the most would consider as a microgrand.

Because the movement is highly decorated ETA movement there just to options ( AD & Manufactur) for me I can service the watch. And the AD where I bought the watch is for me no option anymore. Let’s put is this way… my last service was not a nice experience.

Probably you already thought about servicing the Watch 🤷‍♂️😊

And at the end just one impression from a brand I am interested in as well. It is a Swiss made brand. Few consider Norqain as hidden jam.

Yes that’s one of the reasons I’ve been looking at this brand. Teddy is quite reliable and honest I feel with his reviews and for me is a marker of quality assurance. Peter Kotsa released a similar review waxing lyrical about it, but I question the bias on that channel.

Oh no. Why did you show me this?! It’s a beauty. Even more dilemma now! It’s lovely though seriously thanks I’ll have a closer look.

No trouble at all ✌️🙂

This is a great looking watch. But there are many other excellent options for your budget. $1600 is A LOT of money and my advice would be not to hurry, just keep on looking. Do some research. Christopher Ward, Formex, Longines also offer great watches around that price point.

·

It looks like a great watch but as many mentioned here, more than I'd be willing to spend on an unknown brand unless I absolutely loved the design. The fact it can't be seen in person seals a no as I you really have to try something on to know if it works for you. I'd look at Christopher Ward or Longines in this price range.

·

I have the pastel blue version of this watch, and it’s fantastic. The finishing on the case and dial is outstanding. The high polish bezel is thin but really pops in the sunlight. The quality is also outstanding, including the bracelet which is the most comfortable I own. It is extremely comfortable on my ~18cm wrist.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a higher quality watch in this price range. For reference, in this price range I also own an Oris Divers 65, a Nomos Club Campus, a Sinn 105, and an Oak and Oscar Olmsted.

·

Curious why some on this thread are citing the higher price and the inability to sell the watch down the road, but then suggesting other microbrands like Christopher Ward and Formex? Wouldn't those watches be a) equally priced and b) similarly hard to sell? I can see directing the OP to something with a bit more history like Oris, Tissot or Longines at this price point, but to ask the OP to look at other micros is basically saying you like the other micros more than Monta. That may be true, but the same principal applies. With any of these watches you might be stuck with them given the brand equity, or lack thereof. Christopher Ward started in 2005, Monta in 2016. It's not like either one of them were selling their wares alongside Omega and Cartier at the turn of the 20th century.

·

It looks like an all-around solid watch! Here are some alternatives which you might be interested to check out as well:

  • Pitzmann II

  • Tudor Black Bay 36

  • Christopher Ward Sealander C36

  • Formex Essence 39

  • Sinn 556 IB

  • Longines Spirit

  • Nomos Club Sport Neomatik

·

i like it seems solid one

·

Love the fit, finish and functionality of this watch and other Monta offerings. I’ve seen in person at a couple of watch shows ovee the past 12 months. I am now considering Skyquest or Atlas. It’s just a matter of colorway decision before purchase…

Absolutely agree. But I suppose if you’ve had personal interaction with a particular brand you will favour it, even if falls into the same bracket as the one in question.

I think the idea I’m getting is that virtually everyone who’s seen/handled this thing views it in a highly favourable light.

Also I like to tread the leftfield more so these days. It’s true one could get a Longines for this price but I’m not interested in Longines.

And if I really like a watch I don’t worry too much about the resale value.

Thanks for your comment and logical perspective!

That’s great to know thank you! The bracelet is one of the main features that tempts me. It would be so nice to have a bracelet that is genuinely comfortable even after a whole day of wear

·

The bracelet is the bomb. Basically, at 10mm thick, 38.5mm diameter and 45mm lug to lug with a great bracelet with a glide lock system in the clasp, this is the best wearing watch I own. It’s just so damn comfortable.

Another microbrand killing it! this one looks stunning and I have heard their bracelet is one of the best. I also loved their Atlas GMT white dial.

Yes.. that one! The white dial Atlast GMT. I've struggled not to buy it.

·

I'm wearing my Noble in opaline right now! It was the first "big boy" watch purchase of mine. Truthfully it was the first time I spent over $1k. That said, I am fortunate enough to live in the town where the brand was founded, and I have been into HQ a few times. I cannot recommend the watches or the team at Monta enough.

The product more than feels worth its price tag, the customer service is excellent, and the designs are great in my opinion. I know it's hard to buy sight unseen or to not throw one on wrist first, but I promise the Noble will not disappoint if/when you get one. They are incredible watches for the price, and they are more than capable to GADA! Cheers and best of luck with your decision!

·

Own the Triumph and my wife’s daily is the limited edition Noble in “Tiffany blue.”

I actually bought the Triumph in person at the Monta HQ in St Louis a few years ago while on a cross country road trip. Made an appointment and met with Justin, one of Monta’s founders. Great guy, talked watches with me for an hour while I perused the entire lineup. And let me tell ya, not a bad choice in the lot. Excellent quality, super comfortable bracelet and adjustable clasp. SW300 movements (in both Noble and Triumph), regulated to +/-5spd by Monta. In fact, my Triumph runs about -1.5spd, the wife’s Noble +2spd.

Bottom line, if you get the Noble, I don’t think you’ll regret it!

I just got my Monta Atlas GMT yesterday. Excellence quality watch, accurate to -2 per day (it like COSC watch). It look more expensive than $1900 watch. Good value for the money.
