I have a fully tegimented Sinn U1 and it is a terrific watch. However, as far as "the ultimate tool watch" - I would say my G-Shock Mudmaster is about as tough and toolish as it gets.

I’ve looked at these. They look bigger than my hand! Enormous! How do they wear? Are any of the functions useful?

The G-Shock Mudmasters are indeed big watches and certainly not for daily-wear. But for certain situations/occasions, their size is an asset in terms of legibility and extra robustness through cladding. As for features - there are various models of Mudmaster with differing feature sets - my particular model (GWG-1000-1A3) has a solid suite of functions that I personally find very useful.
Love the RM as an example! Too funny, I watched a video on that thing, and it's so over the top. 🤣
You'll hear suggestions like Breitling Emergency (it's a tank, and can call satellite emerg service) or the RM tank with compass and water pill tablets. But really you want both of those things, not one or the other.
So solution isn't to have 5 or 6 watche$$$, each with one important function.... but to bring an Iridium sat device, proper water filtering container, a small proper compass, etc. Watches do those other jobs 1/2 ass. I want full ass! (wait what 🤔)
So, a watch tracks date and time and won't break is best, IMO. Have the proper item for the job.
Of course, I'll toss my Boring Black Seiko into the ring. Boring Black Seiko (B3!) is spring drive, 300m, light ti, and enjoys going for nutty adventures. It's 45mm x 15m so fulfills the tank requisite without weight of a tank, at a hair under 100g on it's strap.
Spring drive (unidirectional electromagnetic glide wheel) is more far more robust than watches with a swiss escapement. So even the wonderfully sturdy Sinn is the has the somewhat fragile Sellita SW300, and 'meh' lume, compared to B3. (but yes, I'd like to buy 104 or a U50 anyway!).
And yes, g-shock does it great as well - I just like the look of B3, so of course my vote goes that way! Off for a run beside the ocean now... got a few days off this week, so back enjoying the outdoors! 😌

Wow. A great call!! Very difficult to knock your case for this beast. And I agree the lume in Sinn watches aren’t the best. Lume on seikos are incredible generally. I’m yet to experience spring drive but very keen to one day.

The gsar is pretty tough. It was one of the first watches I owned when I went off the deep end and really got into watches over 15 years ago
Based on what ive seen on the internet, probably the Muhle rescue timer
That’s a tough one. Love the Sinn 556 range and the 857 UTC, but the GSAR is very cool too, especially the white dial version
