I have a bunch of tough solar G-Shocks and a couple other solar watches including one Ecodrive and another one on the way.
Typically they stay charged for so long that even those watches that aren't rotated in as often are usually pretty good. That said, every couple months or so I do give each of them a few hours on an LED lamp just to top them off.
I would say that solar is not as sexy as mechanical or automatic, but damn if it isn't much more accurate and much more convenient lol.
I work from home, so my human visual interaction is typically limited to the occasional video conference. I had gotten into this weird habit of matching my baseball cap to like my basketball shorts and my watch and wearing a black horror-themed t-shirt but as a dude in his forties I am honestly trying to detach from the middle-school aesthetic just a tad.
In the unlikely event that they totally solve the power issue; maybe have a larger, wider smartwatch whose entire case including the non-removable band is a solar panel, and can get it to an efficiency level to where it could replace the phone without needing charging- that may well severely impact traditional watches. Those events are far, far off if they're ever coming though.
I've been thinking about this, and I'm coming around to the Citizen Promaster Diver. Tough, though I don't really do much with them that might warrant it, very water resistant in case I get caught in the rain (a distinct possibility), and ultimately the Ecodrive movement means I never have to worry about replacing a battery or winding a watch.
In fact, I've ordered my second one in candy red just today during Jomashop's summer sale.
My Yelang Sea Overlord V1213. I think the green bezel works quite nicely with the green waffle strap, plus the 13 green tritium tubes really give the watch character!
