Hypocrisy, Evolution or Fashion.

I have posted many times about my dislike of large watches and bracelets. I have ridiculed the need for a GMT function and have a phobia like dislike for the Cyclops. With all that said why do I find my new favourite watch to be the Explorer 2 on a bracelet?

Am I a hypocrite? Have my tastes evolved? Or am I just a slave to fashion?

Tastes change, and outside forces can influence that change.

At one time I loved chronographs because they had "interesting" dials due to the sub-dials. These days I prefer plain dials with only a date complication.

·

All of the above. Your tastes may have evolved over time, and your subconscious may be at play doing some self-convincing to justify the cost or embrace the brand hype. They are not mutually exclusive! 👍

·

I go through phases of liking larger or smaller watches.

I've just been through a 'large watch' phase and am entering a 'smaller watch' phase.

There's no rule that says you're only allowed to like one size of watch.

Ongoing learning and changing our minds based on new knowledge and experiences are amazing human qualities. With so much information available, things to do, places to go, people to meet and decisions to make it's very likely that our taste and opinions will change over time... Maybe in the past our beliefs and ideas were more crystallized and the idea of being an 'hypocrite' made more sense... anyhow, watches, wear whatever you like and enjoy the present moment... Maybe in the future you'll like another thing !

·

Sometimes it just works. I am on record stating I will never own/wear a gold watch. Then this came along and whoosh, gone was my firmly held belief :)

No, you're not a hypocrite. Our tastes are constantly evolving. Today, I find myself enjoying lots of watches that I couldn't see myself owning a year ago, and there's watches that I used to really like that I just don't see myself wearing nowadays. As time goes on and I try more and more watches I find it much easier to keep an open mind about watches. Keeping an open mind has been key to my watch journey.

With your wristsize the E2 must be a perfect watch. Enjoy!

·

a friend once said," in my 30s I'm always right.... in my 50s you are right."

i say people do change, wise up or humble up over time. ✌️

Getting Old 🖖🏾

·

Oh wow, the E2 looks much smaller on your wrist than when it's on mine 😂 perfect fit!!! 👌🏻

and, as to your question,,, who cares~ E2 looks perfect on you! Good on you and wear it in good health! Looks mad awesome! 👍🏻

·

Sometimes there are exceptions that make the rule. I'm not a fan of chronographs but I own a Speedmaster.

I don't like Seiko or Rolex yet I have those in my collection:

I don't think these make me a hypocrite, slave to fashion or that my tastes have evolved. I'd like to think that this hobby is mainly greys, never black and white.

I guess the honest question for you to answer is why you held those ideas in the first instance about watch sizes and Rolex etcetera. When I first discovered the freedom and joy of slipping on a watch that suited my wrist size in the late 80s friends openly mocked my Breitling Chronomats and Navitimer, few years later when Breitlings were selling well, the same grunts acted as if they were the first apologists in our cohort. I viewed them as textbook hypocrites.

Some of my watches I've owned for nearly 40 years. My interest stems from a time when 33-34mm watches were the norm. I seem to have avoided the fashion for large watches and only now smaller watches are becoming more popular I find myself going the other way? A contrarian maybe 🤔

Not at all, watches should be fun! My wife is my best friend would be lost without her! She has criticized every watch that I have owned during the past 40 years together. I have collected vintage, you must know how small Rolex Bubblebacks were. I own a small number none are for sale but I cannot wear them. I would buy Rolex again but here in Toronto, the ad and Rolex games are truly egregious. Love your watch remains a personal favourite. 👍👍

That's what you get for ridiculing that which you don't understand. Now you get it. Keep it in mind for the next time.

I musr admit the spelunking feature is indispensable.

·

Because you can’t turn a blind eye to perfection lol

Well played

Yes, you're a hypocrite. But don't feel bad, we all are from time to time. But honestly, and sorry if this sounds harsh, but who really cares about what you feel about large watches or bracelets? Or GMT functions for that matter?

I see these posts where people ask if they should keep it sell a watch. If one is asking for group validation, sell as it's not speaking to you enough. There was a post today asking if influencer hype affected ones purchase decision. I don't understand nit knowing ones own mind enough to have to ask for the group think of a bunch of strangers.

Great thread and what an awesome conversation to have between our huge community. And let be know that all answer are correct! But the most important thing to remember is wear and but what you live and love without remorse. We only get one life and we might as well do it in style!

·

I love the modern Explorer II. It’s the most purpose built of the professional models. I have never bought it due to its size but on you it looks great. If I had 7+ inch wrists I’d be rocking it.

Not every watch needs to be 38-40mm.

Opinions on watches and watch related things is kind of the point of this app. Does this watch look too big/small and look at my new watch is its bread and butter. It would be very quiet on here without such posts. IMO of course.

Fair enough.

But just imagine an enthusiast site stripped of these "please affirm my actions because I seek validation" posts. Less traffic yes, but so much more information rich content!

A boy can dream......

;)

I’ve voiced my opinion that in matters of tastes there should be no dispute. On the other side discussing aspects of time keepers and the idea of time is interesting.

I tend to go to dedicated forums for the more in depth discussions about vintage annual calendar ect.

https://www.watchrepairtalk.com/ Is quite good IMO.

You should try it you would be surprised

I’ve tried both. The new one wears better and it’s wearable on wrist but I’m moving away from that aesthetic. The largest watch I like wearing now is my 41mm Sub, which is borderline for me. I have a Tudor FXD that’s even bigger but I don’t wear it casually anymore and it’s my mechanical beater for gym/adventure.

·

You just have good taste. Like me 😂

·

It's okay to change one's mind...especially when a watch is near perfection. Which that is. 😉👍

·

Probably because you have an open mind and aren’t stubborn. And tastes change all the time. Mine certainly do
