Walked into an AD to try on a Tudor

Walked out with…

Six months ago, I was blissfully ignorant of the world of horology, perfectly content with my old Seiko quartz (kinetic) watch. One day, YouTube offered me a Teddy Baldassarre video, and I foolishly clicked.

I began watching more of his videos, so YouTube fed me more watch channels. Before I could say “Vacheron Constantin”, I was hooked. I then began my months-long quest for my first automatic Swiss watch.

I started looking at Hamilton and Tissot because who would spend more than a thousand dollars on a watch? However, the longer it took me to decide, the more my appreciation of fine watches grew. I upgraded my search to include Longines, Christopher Ward, B&M, and Tudor. I spent hours watching videos, studying websites, and visiting jewelry stores to try on different sizes.

I focused on the Tudor 1926 in 36mm, and yesterday, while on vacation in Teddy Baldassarre’s town (no, he wouldn’t meet with me), I walked into an AD to try one on for one final time. While talking to the sales woman who was showing me the Tudor, I innocently asked, noticing the Rolex display, if they had any available.

Since I’ve been reading about watches for six months, I half-expected her to laugh at me, or brush me off by offering to place me on the dreaded waiting list. Instead, she said, ”as a matter of fact, we have one and it’s a 36mm.” After trying on a few more Tudors and Cartiers, she asked if I wanted to try on the Rolex. Next thing I knew, on my wrist was a Datejust 36, steel and gold. And I could buy it, then and there!

So I had the Tudor 1926 and the Rolex Datejust side-by-side. Fortunately, my wife was with me or I would never pick the Rolex.

My six-month quest for my first Swiss watch is over. I walked into an AD to try on a Tudor and walked out with a Rolex Datejust on my wrist.

Lucky that I have such an understanding wife of 36+ years!

·

I probably wouldn’t have ordered it  in two tone because it’s much more expensive, but I agree. It really increases its appeal. Very lucky, indeed.

·

Congrats! Beautiful watch! Almost the double to my 30 year old 2 toned DJ except you have lumed indices (at least they appear lumed) and presumably a much better bracelet. Enjoy it!

·

A true classic. Congratulations! Wear it through thick and thin.

·

Absolutely fire, looks incredible.  Congrats OP!

Congrats on the purchase. Wear it in good health 😎

·

Great watch

I hate Rolex for not making 39 mm 😎

You're either a lucky man, or that jeweler has now posted your face on their 'top-sekrit channels' as 'guy who seems to have money and is not a flipper' type. In short, you got hooked.

My sources? Trust me, Imma dugong. 😛😂

In all seriousness though, congratulations on your purchase and finding that AD and staff that isn't so far into their own hype. Congratulations, and continue wearing your Datejust in triumph and as a symbol of hope for the rest of us. 😛

Great choice, you were very lucky! 😄 Congrats!

·

Excellent...I wore a two tone DateJust in 36mm for over 25 years. A terrific watch. Enjoy

Now I’m feeling a bit guilty! First automatic Swiss watch, first time walking into a Rolex AD, and I walk out with the watch of my dreams. It was meant to be…

Gorgeous TT DJ36!

·

G… Damn! Only the one you’ve got or a Day Date in 36mm would be the Rolex I’d get if I ever could. Enjoy wearing it knowing that some dude’s gums are sweating.

Absolutely stunning, beautiful, health to enjoy.

Beautiful and stylish. Off to a great start!

·

Congrats

I have to say, that 36mm looks perfect on your wrist.

·

Thanks. The last time I bought a watch, they didn’t make anything larger than 36mm! When I went inside a store for the first time this go around, I couldn’t believe how large the watches were! They looked like pocket watches to my old eyes.

😍

Good choice, what a classy watch. Also in the 36 mm size, just like the Datejust should be. My guess is that we’ll see more gold and steel combinations in the future, I have the feeling with the whole 80s and 90s fashion trends going strong currently these are going to get en vogue again. And rightfully so!
