Positivity in watchcrunch

Oh, totally.  Max set this platform up from the start to be entirely positive, and marketed it heavily as such.  As a result, my observation is the following:

• You get self-selection - People who are looking for a positive experience gravitate to the platform
• Moderation - If any topic goes off the rails or gets too testy, the thread gets taken down.  Some folks don't like censorship of this sort, but I love it!  I mean, online platforms enable us to say things we would never say to anyone to their faces.  The fear of the ban-hammer enforces a level of civility!
• Mute - I LOVE the mute button!  I can't wait for the day that we all have virtual reality glasses  that enable us to not see or hear or acknowledge the existence of people who we wouldn't get along with
• Ignore - Finally, there's so much content being generated here, it's super easy to simply ignore anything that you don't like and move on
• Attrition - It's funny how social norms get established.  Once the norm was "be nice," over time you find that people who aren't that nice, and don't have such nice things to say...  well, they just get ignored, nobody engages with them, and then they simply attrit.  It's AMAZING!

I love it.  WC is absolutely the best online community I've ever been a part of.

Nice points bout the WC. So far, I’ve been opening WC much more than twitter and FB 😅 

I wish that there were more mean people to argue with.  @HotWatchChick69 would have you believe that the square pegs just melt away. If it were only that simple.

He is right about one aspect, most folks will just not comment where to do so would bring about a disagreement. A few days ago someone posted a picture of a watch and said something to the effect of "you just can't not love this watch."  My first thought was that that proposition was not empirically correct.  I did not love the watch. Perhaps, I should let the poster know that they were wrong and that you could not love that watch. But, I didn't. So, that person now incorrectly believes that one of his watches is universally beloved. We allow him to live that lie.

It's remarkably civil here.  It reminds me of the old Facebook when you actually kinda knew everyone you were interacting with.

I find myself even a little more tolerant of the pricklier types here because it's okay to not agree with someone if they have other things to contribute.  I'd like to believe a few folks are extending the same grace to me with my nontrivial amount of snark.

No idea if it scales but it's nice to be here.

It easy for me to be positive here, or at least not a negative jerk. Baby steps... ;)

I have to agree with HWC. Was a positive platform from the start, most of us want to keep it that way. Helps that its focused on one hobby and that people are not typically posting about more hot button issues or politics. Lets me really focus on the hobby I love when I want to focus on it and to get the opinions and advice of people who have been doing this longer than me. I really enjoy it here! 

Have to agree. This group appreciates watches and collections from all walks of the community. Don’t like Rolex? Cool, move on. Don’t like homages?  Cool, ignore them. I think most here can appreciate someone enjoying their watch/collection regardless. Some of us can read the tea leaves and see where the collection may go. Others like @HotWatchChick69 will make sure to point out the oddball, but equally awesome peices. That’s the fun part. This group not being rolex forums, WUS, or Reddit helps. If these threads start popping up in WSJ, you know we are doing something wrong.

In my view, there is little need to crap on stuff. Easier just to ignore stuff one doesn’t like and let others enjoy their watches. 

This is a very positive space by design.  I have learned so much about horology just keeping all the other stuff out of the mix. You don't have to be excited over someone's favorite watch. You get excited by how excited they are. Sometimes you begin to look at a watch in a different light. This happens because all the Social Media posing and bashing is left somewhere else to beat highchairs and super impose supercars in the background wearing three watches on each forearm 

Definitely the most civil platform I've ever used. Also, there seems to be more thought provoking content than flexing, which seems to be the opposite of so many other forums.

For the most part it’s positive, but I muted a few and a few muted me it’s all good … We can’t all be positive at times but most of the time it’s civil here… 

Older hobby forums (e.g., 10 years) tend to be dominated by a relative handful of regulars. They combine experience with "if it ain't broke" rigidity. Innocent new users get crushed for asking naïve new user questions. Some cranky regulars imagine trolls in every other post, when they themselves actually cause more trouble. But with experience and high post counts, these long-term users dominate the environment. Furthermore, large sites attract industry people who tend to avoid open discussions and focus on positive brand propaganda or marketing. 

Once people start to notice these patterns, active hobbyists (topic-oriented) break off and form new sites (e.g., this one) to get away from that atmosphere. Many people want a fresh start. This pattern applies to all kinds of hobbies.

I agree with you 100%!  I don't think having a safe space where you don't have to hear opinions you don't like is a good thing or very healthy. There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism!

I have recently learned that calling something silly is entirely too negative here.  LOL

Overall more positive than other sites , but there's always room for a little snark now and then.
