Thoughts on the Bulova Lunar Pilot?

This is one of my dream watches -- they're tough to come by in my country.

However, as much as I'm yearning to put one on my wrist, I've learned always to make an informed decision when purchasing watches.

So far, my knowledge is limited to its specifications + the brilliant Dave Scott story (plus the fact that the actual watch he wore was sold at an auction for $1.6 MILLION!)

I need to know if there's anything lacking in this particular watch. Or if there's another moon watch with the same price tag that's more "worth it".

Get the Mini Lunar Pilot. Even then, 43mm is massive.

·

My advice would be to avoid buying a watch because a watch that shares the same name, or bears a passing resemblance once went somewhere, or was worn by a famous person.

I'm sure the watch is nice, but buy one because you like the style/size, not the story.

I’m thinking of getting the blue version … not sure yet… hmm

its awesome alternative to omega speedmaster, also i think the smaller version is better

Don't worry, I'm not hooked on the watch because of mere resemblance or history. But to say that I'm unaffected by the Apollo 15 mission would be a lie.

Without revealing too much, my uncle had this watch. I respect him, and he's responsible for my love of sci-fi and space exploration.

Unfortunately, he sold his piece to a friend. If he still has it, I probably would've stolen it lowkey.

Damn, that's one hell of a read -- really fun. I can tell it's written from the soul 😂

I agree. You'd need to be a Jotnar to rock it.

What's stopping you?

I owned a 45mm version. I thought it looked REALLY weird around the lugs. Basically the strap looked tiny and super out of proportion to the case. A 22mm strap would have looked heaps better. Eventually I had to sell it, I thought it looked that weird. The new 43mm version seems to have had a lot of work done around the lugs, so that might have some potential, but I've only seen it in videos and still images so far.

I was about to question your wrist size, but then I saw how you make a G-Shock DW6900 (a watch I also have) look proportionate. Then I knew, why you had the 45mm 🤣

They are pie pans in the Old version. The New version is still VERY substantial as well but manageable.

What's stopping you?

Since I have the speedy, do I need a bulova? … I know the answer is yes but I’m also thinking of getting a Tudor chronograph, hence my hesitation and even if I do get it, would I wear it? Is another question…

Coincidentally I'm wearing mine today. It's the original version on my 7.25" wrist. As you can see, it's definitely not too big - my Mrs often wears it because she says it's very comfortable.

Really good watch, available cheaply & certainly not worth the premium for the newer smaller version ( & what were they thinking with that awful blue one? Zero historical significance & looks shite too )

·

Buy what you like. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks!!!!!

·

I love mine, not a small watch but it’s manageable. For reference my wrist is 7.5

I know, but it doesn't mean I'll purchase a watch without considering first.

Do you have the mini version or the goliath? 😂

I have the Goliath, and I have a seven inch wrist. The NATO strap it came on slims it down so it doesn’t look cartoonish at all.

·

Unfortunately both wear too big on my 6.5in wrist

Do you know any chronographs within the price bracket that you can recommend?

Not sure if you have looked at the Dan Henry range. They are all vintage inspired and designed by a collector. The chronographs are - I think - all meca-quartz movements and they are relatively inexpensive. I haven’t seen one in the flesh myself but I have seen a number of reviewers reference them positively. Just looking at the range might give you a feel for what style you really favour and what you’re less keen on. I would have bought one but with quite a large collection battery watches become a pain (little wear time but requiring battery replacement - esp. if they are dive sealed) whereas solar and mechanical watches work better for me, or at least a ten-year battery; that is the only reason I have hesitated.

Scrolling through their website as we speak. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm loving some of their designs.

Sadly most of the pieces are EU exclusive 😭

Awesome watch, try Jomashop.😎

I agree with everything, everyone has said. All good points. When deciding on which version of the Lunar Pilot to get, I carefully weighed all the issues that commonly arise when discussing this watch: size, historical significance, date wheel, “Bulova” font, case finish, etc.

After carefully considering all the factors, well, you know how that ended. 🙄

This is type od watch you really have to try it before you buy it. For me 45mm is a plate on my wrist and 43 is a coaster.

I love mine…but do what you want 🤙

I'm wearing mine today, love it. It's not an everyday wear but it's beautiful and ridiculously accurate (2 secs in 6 mths). It does help if you have bigger wrists like me but then I wouldn't wear bb54 so horses for courses

I have to agree with this! I had a Lunar Pilot. Loved the dial, loved the heritage, loved the movement. Hated the case size, hated the case shape (flat, absolutely flat bottom), and hated the lug width. 😉 I am considering taking a look at the smaller one, but I want to try it on before I make a decision, as the 45mm just never fit my 7.5" wrist. I am hoping the 43mm fits better. I am also hoping the 20mm strap width will look better with a 43mm case.

Yes I agree .. I changed the metal strap for a leather thinking it would make the watch look smaller . After a few days I just couldn’t handle the lug length any longer. They say the lug length on the new 43mm are shorter but still around the 50 mm mark lug to lug. Those with 6.5 or 6.75 wrist size will still find the watch too long. I really think Bulova should have carried out more research on the ideal sizing of the new version… 48mm lug to lug would have been ideal which would fit the majority of wrist sizes.

·

I'll be a bit biased as he Lunar Pilot is my daily watch now a days but it's an awesome watch, it's well made, really accurate still didn't have to adjust the time in close to an year and also it's a bit a conversation starter since it's a bit unusual.

·

Question for this of you that purchased the 45mm LP; what did you think of the leather strap? I'm trying to decide if I should just buy the kit with the NATO strap or go with the leather. Also, does the leather kit include the NATO?
