First World Problems

So crunchers.

In february I got my first Rolex, the 41 mm Datejust Mint Fluted Motif.

I felt super lucky and a bit suprised as it is a hole new dial and color.

But I got it and since then, its been a part of my collection and worn quite a lot!

In September it was on my wrist when my wife gave birth to our daughter, my first born. So it has some sentimental value for me. ๐Ÿ€

I July I was able to get put on the list for the BLRO on a jubilee. My Grail.

And now my contact at the ad told me, that I will be allocated one Q1 2024. The year when i will be 30 years old. UHH!

My dilemma is, that with a newborn baby, money should be placed with her, and not so much on watches. I think it will be hard to justify two Rolex in my collection at once.

So what should I do?๐Ÿค”

Sell the Datejust and get the Pepsi or keep the Datejust and let the grail watch go?

It would be quite a stretch to keep both, as per my wife ๐Ÿคฃ

Keep the DJ and hand it down to your kiddo. Rolex isn't going anywhere. Be patient.

Dude, letโ€™s get real here. The kid comes second to the Rolexes.

Guess its FOMO ๐Ÿซฃ

Tough decision. If you plan on keeping the watch and not selling it, then the sentimental value associated with the DJ may make more sense. OTOH, even if you don't plan on ever selling, life often throws curveballs that you don't expect, and the Pepsi would probably be a better choice to liquidate in a hurry should the need arise. Of course, that could potentially change in the future, although that's a bet I wouldn't be willing to take.

On the assumption that you only have one, and keep it for your entire lifetime (so that secondary value can be reasonably removed from the equation), does one speak more to you than the other? If so, that should be your choice.

Best of luck with your decision.

Keep the DJ. Sentimental value over everything! ๐Ÿ’š

Sell the baby, get the Pepsi.

ยท

I like the DJ. Get that 529/college plan started and push off the second Rolex for a couple of years.

Never let that rule your purchases. It will ruin collecting for you and there will always be one you miss. Always.

ยท

Im assuming you canโ€™t keep both, so I personally would keep the DJ since you wore it during the birth of your child. But, I would buy the Pepsi, and sell it for a profit. More money for the baby.

ยท

Keep the DJ, and work on dropping the concept of a "grail" watch.

When you build something up to be special in your mind, it rarely lives up to those expectations.

ยท

My 2 cents on it and its a little tough one - Keep the Datejust - its your first Rolex BUT also buy the GMT purely as an investment for future. Explain this to your wife that since the production of GMTs is going to be cut by as much as 60 percent at Rolex ( true news from the watch world) these pieces are likely to rise in stock - its good to keep gmt use it as a daily watch because it gains value if it has a natural daily wear look without any significant damage or wear and tear - Its a great investment while enjoying your grail

It would only be a great investment if he were to flip it right away, which is not a horrible play, but risks burning the AD relationship. Otherwise, little chance it beats traditional investment over a long period of time.

ยท

On the contrary its best NOT to flip at all right away but keep it and actually use it too - may be you didnt read what i mentioned there - GMT production is being cut and these watches are going to gain a lot more value in future so its a great mid-long term investment

ยท

Itโ€™s just money. Youโ€™ll recover the losses within a few months.

(thatโ€™s the conversation I have in my head Everytime Iโ€™m in a similar position). Please donโ€™t take this as advice ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜‚

ยท

Just be honest with your AD , explain your situation and ask to be allocated another in the near future, also explain you didn't want to buy it and flip it

ยท

Personally, if you could only keep one then Iโ€™d go for the one that you love the most of the two; you can and will create more memories in the future. Based on what youโ€™ve written, thatโ€™s the Pepsi.

I let โ€˜sentimental valueโ€™ make me hold on to a watch I never truly bonded with, and itโ€™s pretty much lived in the safe since. 2ยข

If you can afford both, and still have money for the baby then have it all. If not family first.
