Which one would you choose?

Hello watch family! I have a quick poll for you today. If you had the chance to buy now one of these two watches, brand new and at around 400$. Which one would you go for? The infamous Seiko SKX009K1 or the Seiko GMT SSK001K1? Let’s see what you think 🤔

I fail to see a reason to get the SKX over the SSK in 2023. The only thing the SKX has going for it is the threaded crown and 200 m WR. Are you going to dive a lot with hour watch on? Also, if you’re planning to wear the watch in a rotation, be ready to spend many hours shaking that SKX to wind it, because the 7S26 movement on it doesn’t hand wind nor hack.

·

Personally I would say neither. I don't think the old skx are worth the money, they were good because they were the cheapest iso diver, now they are not even an iso diver. I would get the gmt but wait for a sale and you will probably get it for 300

I have no need (nor desire) for a GMT so would take the older one.

There is no reasoning! This is a fun Sunday poll. And in any case is there any reasoning for loving watches? For example why someone would buy a vintage 100 years old watch over a new modern watch with a brand new movement? Btw I have the skx007j already so I know the pros and cons. Have a great Sunday 🙏

I see your point and it is very ok not to like any of them! It is a subjective debate after all.

·

Never understood the desire for a gmt

Never understood the desire for a gmt

I have a couple of gmt watches basically because I liked their design. It is true that 99,9% of us will never find any use for it

I like them both actually, I just don't think either is worth $400. I would get the 5kx (but again wait for a sale, don't pay retail for any Seiko) or I really like the dressKX. There are also so many ways of getting something similar, just look at Long Island Watch.

Being a vintage watch lover, I will take the SKX. That’s why we usually have more cents than sense. We collect divers that can’t go anywhere near the kitchen tap. We see beauty in a scratched and faded bezel as opposed to a shiny ceramic one. So yes, I’ll take the SKX because it’s a legend and is no longer in production. No coincidence that it’s $400 when I bought mine for half that years ago.

·

I will add that there is something about Seiko that you will not get with any alternative, they will be close maybe better but not the same. A watch is worth what someone says it is worth and as long as it makes you happy go for it.

I've just bought this and it has many flaws but show me anything like it.

In both cases costs of shipping and VAT/duty are included hypothetically! I don’t think you will ever find the SKX for a price lower than 400$ and that’s already a bargain for me. It is discontinued after all and with a lot of unsettled hype around it. The GMT is currently selling for around 480$ so also in this case 380-400$ is a fine price. I am not sure if it will go as low as 300$ during sales but I might be wrong.

My friend you couldn’t articulate what I feel about collecting and being obsessed with watches better! I agree 100% 👏

As a Seiko addict I can only confirm what you are saying! That’s a very handsome watch you got there 😍

In the UK I've seen them going for £200-250 on ebay for the gmt with tags still on which is a great price. Obviously different countries get different prices. The skx is a good deal as far as investment and you won't lose money on it. But for me the difference in design and function between the skx and the 5kx is negligible and I've seen the 5kx for £130. There is no wrong answer though, my Seiko in the picture has alignment issues (it is a Seiko) it is kinetic (Seiko shuffling for days) and it is a brick but I love it and it makes me smile and I don't need to go to the gym anymore. 💪

·

Thank you Sir 🙏

this Nato looks 🔥on the SKX

I have no doubt about the SKX line and I feel personally that it is already a classic. Take care 🙏

The snk80x is another Seiko that is becoming a classic, as is the now discontinued baby alpinist. Then you have the original monster and the sarb033/035. If you buy a Seiko just hope they discontinue it and it basically goes up in price.

I have the SNZG11J1 which fits better my wrist due to its bigger size. For the SARBs I am always looking for the right price to get one. Hopefully it will happen in the near future. Many of my watches are discontinued now and after I purchased them new. For me the thing is not so much the economic value when a watch get discontinued rather than that you have a classic piece in your collection. I own currently 92 watches and I have never sold any so far 🙈

In the UK we are quite lucky with some prices, 5kx and ssk particularly and fortunately I have an active job so it's not a problem with the Seiko. Enjoy whatever you buy.

Thank you Sir! Enjoy the hobby too 💪🏻

·

I would take the SSK without hesitation because the old SKX has outdated specs and is not worth anywhere close to that price. Plus I don't like pepsi bezels.

·

SKX, ok in its day - really only popular & a cult watch because it was cheap at the time , but really only ok then & nowhere near today's base line. Certainly not worth today's asking price!

Ive had 3 , years ago.

·

i prefer ssk mostly because its hack lol, gmt is a nice function too

·

Hard to go for the SKX besides the need for a diver certified watch. The new movement, solid end link bracelet, and especially the hardlex covered bezel are great upgrades for the casual wearer. Just wish there was a “pan am” color bezel, or a moss green color way, and I would be all over that

·

I don't need hacking or handwinding. And I can do basic maths, so I have no use for the GMT either.

$400 to €600 for an SKX seems a bit steep. But I'd probably still buy one, if I didn't own three already.

·

I understand everyone’s point and this is why our community is so diverse. This is what makes it interesting and allows for all of us to enjoy so many beautiful watches of any year, price range, any movement and origin. It would have been so dull if we all liked one brand or 5-6 models all together. This is why I believe that even if a watch is older and less advanced, if it has history and a fan base is as fun to own and wear as any new, upgraded timepiece. There is enough room for everyone’s collecting journey and strategy. Vintage or new, high or low end, Automatic or Quartz, cheap or expensive, Casio or Rolex. Above all this should be fun. Don’t forget about that!

In a perfect world we wouldn't have to choose, we could have both. Alas it is an imperfect world.

Call me shallow, but I would choose the SSK001 for one simple reason.. I don't have a GMT and we always want what we don't have.

·

I've got both and I don't wear either of them, the SSK is prettier though I think.

Why would I call you shallow? The GMT is a very beautiful watch btw. I wouldn’t create this poll if I wasn’t hesitant myself. And yes in a perfect world I would have bought both too 😎🍻

I agree that the SSK is very pretty! What troubles me between the two is that the skx is already a classic, with a well established history in the watch enthusiasts world and the other still needs to create it

·

I’ve started a seiko dive watch collection along side my other watches and yep I’d go skx it’s big part of the history of seiko divers
