What is the WSJ on? 💊

With perhaps the exception of GS, these are the new class of status watches? 🤔

They are fine watches and definitely “off beat” but not sure about this bold claim though … 🫣

I actually was trying to figure it out but couldn’t. From the case, I am guessing the surfer’s watch brand Nixon.

No hate on these from me but just pondering about the bold claim. 😂

Yeah ikwym hahaha. Coming from the legal profession, THE status watches are still the same, Rolex, Omega, and the holy trinity. Nothing else counts to non-watch guys 😭😷

The ultimate flex is buying a watch specifically because you know it will lose value immediately after purchase 😎

·

The A students didn't go into journalism....😀😀

·

+1 Nomos and GS 😊

·

Maybe this speaks more to the collection available at a dealer that hosted the photoshoot but they would all be conversation starters! I’d pick the Rado to go off the beaten path but double wristing that with the Apple Watch would be funny (if I didn’t wear an Ultra :/).

·

If we're talking about colorful lighthearted brands that aren't afraid to play with color, i think Nomos, Oris and Grand Seiko are solid picks

The rest are irrelevant. Bell and Ross? Is that even a luxury price point where they sell at?

But the traditional brands even Rolex have light hearted warches, Stella dial OPs, the celebration dial and autism puzzle day date, etc

This is just a fluff piece for a slow week at wsj

I think it’s a Boldr Venture that uses a less expensive version of vanta black

·

….commission?

We all have to pay the bills

Ad revenue beat out editorial a long time ago…

·

The round black watch in pvd with yellow on the hands is a Boldr Venture Singularity. Didn't get a chance to read the article but my guess is they are saying that watches are now about individuality/expressing yourself. Like Chunghauphoto says above they are probably selling advertising to those mentioned in the article.

·

They are equally right and wrong depending on perspective. The market has determined Rolex still remains king, by a long shot, and people love classics. Cartier, Omega, etc. but among watch lovers? Those brands are a bit boring.

It’s okay to bring one to a watch meetup, etc, but no one cares or takes notice. If I brought that new B&R? That would get more attention than a Daytona.

The all black watch is a Boldr Venture Singularity. Www.boldrsupply.co. Under $500 and uses an NH35. The dial is ultra black, apparently absorbing 99.4% of light.

„GS“ and „Hype“ categorically don’t go together.

·

Now we just need Rolling Stones take on the subject.

Bell and Ross is at or at a higher price point than Oris, Nomos, and Tudor IIRC

Anyone who buys a watch (usually rolex by numbers) for status and not for what it is, is the equivalent to the people who monogram their shirts in contrasting colors and placed in obviously visible places, and neither are taken seriously by the type of people they are trying to attract attention from.

Like a custom shirt or suit, a rolex is a well built and finely crafted thing, and wearing one says you appreciate those things. But focusing on trying to gain some sort of "status" out of it takes away from that, and says you care more about other peoples' opinions than actually appreciating what the object is.

I think you are forgetting the target audience. Its the same reason that my gift subscription of GQ largely ended in the recycle bin. But again, given readers of the WSJ, this is what works. The WSJ has to showcase the next trend, no matter what it is. It can be all kinds of things, but it can't be static.

Not quite. While I'm not a WSJ subscriber, I fall squarely in their typical readership demographic. But I get this article wasn't intended for me. Maybe it's for their younger and hipper demographic; two things I'm clearly not. I'm of an age that when I do read WSJ articles, it's for finance not fashion. 😜

·

Watches have become so popular during recent years, I suspect the ultimate fashion choice might be no watch. Cannot be more contrarian than to not buy in completely. I always recall a vintage Patek dealer who never wore a watch, he did not want his customers to be distracted by any other watch than the one he was selling.

This article was clearly not intended for watch enthusiasts, but people who wear a watch more like jewelry. At the same time, I really don't see anything wrong with it. While you fall into the WSJ demographic, you are probably not their typical reader when it comes to watches.

How has the experience been with this Oris model? ...I've seen it several times and it seems to be a good choice.

Here's the first paragraph of the article, for those who can't get past the paywall:

“WHEN YOU walk around, you just see a sea of pretty standard faces,” said Eddie Lam, 39, who works in financial services in Manhattan. He’s talking about humdrum watches: so-called “desk diver” models with black dials and chunky digits, chronographs covered in fussy mini-dials, blocky Apple Watches. But you won’t find a standard ticker on Lam’s wrist. He’s a keen collector of quirky timepieces with semiprecious stone dials. A favorite design, by Swiss brand Jaquet Droz, boasts a rosy rubellite face and pinkish, red-gold case (red gold is an alternative  to rose gold). “I basically live in a suit, so this is the only avenue of expression,” he said. Letting “a crazy, pastel-color dial” peek out from his sober tailored cuff makes him smile, he added.

I don't work on Wall St. (I work on 5th Ave. for much less money). And no suits; my dress is casual, and pretty low key. Yet the article pretty much describes my taste, if not quite my price point. In watches I do like an interesting dial with bit of quirk and flair. No, black dials and divers don't do a lot for me. They are a bit of self-expression, but I'm not trying to make any kind of statement, except maybe to myself. In fact, when I wear a Grand Seiko, I really hope that people who see me don't really notice, or know what it costs. I'm just trying to amuse myself. Who knew I was trendy.

Here are some of the watches I've posted here before:

The ultimate flex is buying what you love without regard for resale value, YouTube hype, social media hits, or even Wall Street Journal style section write-ups.

Big money for poopers or bust.

·

These are six watches that I wouldn’t buy with my own money. That immediately renders the entire editorial content moot.

Then the excerpt quoted above confirms this. I don’t care what that Rando in the article likes or doesn’t like. It only matters what I like.

Rado full ceramic

That’s actually a really cool collection, WSJ.

It’s a BOLDR Venture.. according to AI :)

This was sort of touched on in the fashion industry by a gentleman named Jeff staple. He applied it to sneakers but someone who was an AD for the likes of Nike (a huge hype machine) and now work for a Swiss watch manufacturer I can see the similarities between the two especially after Covid. He talk about how now adays it isn’t rare anymore to see rare shoes on people almost common place, and how people would seem more of an individual if they showed up to a meeting in a pair of Chuck Taylor’s. That’s how I feel nowadays seeing a Pepsi or another hype color steel sports watch… I have a feeling of meh… the internet must have told you that’s cool. Hopefully the hypebeast of the watch world will fizzle out, or it will just prove instagram and hype/re-sell culture ruins many subcultures of Enthusiast.

I wore Chuck Taylors when I worked as a dishwasher best time of my life! Have a great day! Sadly I intend to wear a watch until the big adios, planning always a next.

I can't speak to the Laser version in the article's image (I can't speak to the article either thanks to the paywall), but I have the blue dial Pro Pilot X Calibre 400 and quite like it. Is there anything in particular you'd like to know about?
