Horological Heresy!

You are invited to commit watch heresy, with NO consequences whatsoever!

As watch lovers, we are often exposed to widely accepted norms and views within the hobby. These can be about brands, shapes, sizes, colours, iconic designs, derivative designs, hierarchys, what’s good, what’s bad, too big, too small, how many, how much……….

But here you can break away from the herd and head off into the swamp! No one will hold it against you, there will be no knocks on the door in the middle of the night. You can explain, but you don't have to. This is a safe space. What’s said in this thread stays in this thread.

To kick off, I have to say I don’t actually CARE if a watch bracelet tapers or not! Take that, watch hive-mind!

99% of the population does not need a watch with greater than 10 atm water resistance and honestly probably half that would be more than fine with 5 atm.

There’s a place in this world for Apple Watches. It’s just another gateway drug for people to get into watches.

£259 for an Apple Watch SE and it has so much functionality, it’s the most functional watch you can buy at that price.

I stopped wearing my Apple Watch after 4 months and sold it on.

I think I do a good job of marching to my own drum and not being shy about it, so I'm not sure I have any burning hot take to add here other than this: If 1:1 homages were such a problem, the copyright owners would do something. They don't, so I'm not gonna be arsed to care about whether it's a copy as long as it's not branded as the OG.

If I traveled in circles where appearance mattered more than substance, I might feel differently; probably because I'd likely be able to afford the OG's and not the homages.

·

why don't all brands publish lug to lug dims?!!!!

·

If there is an ISO standard for watches to be called dive watch, why can't the watch industry certify when a watch can be called "made in..." I.e. Swiss Made etc.

·

Gerald Genta was a hack and a fraud, he just got lucky a couple times with the Royal Oak and Nautilus, and rode that bus to fame. Most of the stuff he made under his own name isn't very good. And I don't much care for the RO or the Nautilus either.

Yeah, $259 every couple years before the battery in the current one dies and it goes in the bin.

You can get the battery replaced, but arguing that spending £259 every few years for a watch is a big outlay when you’re on this site is certainly a take.

I have several (gasp!) “fashion” watches… Affordable. Attractive. Accurate because they’re quartz.

I feel so much lighter now… Thank you @torchy

Feels good don’t it!

Diamonds or indeed any precious stones should never appear on a watch dial or bezel. Never ever.

Over and out.

·

If “fashion watches” are a bad thing, then Cartier and Hermes are too. #consistency

With you on the taper. . . .

In fact I prefer little or no taper. . . . . . OMG what did I saaaaaaaay . . .

I'm sure there will be blowback on this but . . . . . .

Building a "purchase history" so that the almighty AD will deign to supply you with what is essentially a trinket (every and all utility on whichever grail watch you want can be obtained elsewhere at a tiny fraction of the cost)

Is this not just abasing oneself to the God of consumerism, at its highest level, while others in all our societies, suffer the very real effects of poverty. . . . . It's problematic . . . . .

I'm sure I'll be shot for this . . . .

·

I'm really tired of the vintage inspired stuff coming out. Vintage is fine but the new 70's watches just look too old without actually being that way.

·

If every brand used only quartz they’d still charge the same amount as mechanical. It’s the only the brand prestige the average person cares about.

·

Rolex ADs have a great business model that should be more widely adopted across different retail areas, it's really friendly and cool.

I think all chronograph should use a quartz movement

Makes sense. Chronographs need to be accurate.

Omega are the Washington Generals of the watch world. They scored a single point in 1969 and have been riding that high ever since.

Who are the Globetrotters?

Snoopy has no place on a watch for adults.

There are no adults here.

I'm a noob more or less so my opinion is not important. That being said, my Aragon is a thick boy with 22mm lug with and zero taper. It feels great to me.

NOT heresy: Aragons are awesome.

Nothing that watch guys say here, have ever said, or will say in the future about watches will make the slightest difference to anyone, even (especially?) other watch guys.

·

I like Hardlex.

No no no. The first rule of Homological Heresy is "We don't talk about Horological Heresy!"

I could replace my Apple Watch Ultra every two years between now and when I die, and I will still not have spent as much as a Daytona. ;)

And have created 40 times more eco-trash than you needed to . . . . . .

I'm 58 and you think I'm going to live another 80 years. I appreciate the support, but no. And Apple does full recycling of anything they sell. Its only e-waste if you throw it away.

Secondly, my Apple watch caught my un-diagnosed heart issue. It lets me exercise and take calls without having to haul around a phone, lets me have music for my Airpods also without my phone. Lets me make my purchases without having to carry credit cards. I love mechanical watches I own quite a few. But they are the limited device, not my Ultra.

And it will still be keeping better time than anything Rolex will ever make.
