One Year In / One Spot? (sotc)

So now that I'm a year into this whole watch collecting madness and I've sold/returned more watches than I currently own, I figured I'd make a little post. I know I'm in a good spot with these watches, because I want to wear all of them everyday... but there is one vacancy and this group always has some good suggestions. How am I doing one year in? And what should fill that empty spot?

Current SOTC:

Baltic Aquascaphe / Halios Universa / Farer Stanhope / G-shock / Hamilton Khaki Field / Seiko SRPE / Brew Retrograph

Great collection! For some reason I feel like a Timex Marlin would fit well in there.

·

Beautiful collection! Maybe another diver or something vintage?

I've been looking for something vintage. Not sure where to begin.

I've been looking for something vintage. Not sure where to begin.

When I started looking at vintage watches I usually searched "brand name" + "decade." So, Omega 1960s or something. You'll at least see examples of what the design language was like and find the names of pieces that you can look for specifically if you like them. There's a lot out there and always happy to help!

I totally agree that there seems to me a Timex void... I actually just tried their new Chronograph, but it was a bit busy.

In retrospect, I myself have bought too many watches over the course of two years. I went from ~5 watches in 2021 to ~15 today. If I were you in this situation, I would tell myself to slow it down, enjoy your collection, and don't look for the "next thing" because there can and will always be a "next thing."

As for a recommendation, if I must, something flashy with a vibrant dial like a Tissot PRX

I'm with you... it's also why I haven't bought a larger box. I've considered the prx... I like it for sure, just wasn't wild about the size, and now I think the new 35 is too small.

1yr in that is a very nice collection. Is there a theme to your collection? Do you have a grail ? all these will determine what you want to fill the empty spot with. You could wait for Kurono/Ming etc to drop and pick up a Japanese micro brand.

Not necessarily a theme, aside from somewhat "affordable." The closest thing to a grail at this point is the farer, which just arrived last week; I've had my eye on that one for almost the entire year... Never heard of Kurono/Ming.

Good thoughts... and yes, I totally agree that I could use a splash of color. I'm good with quartz, mechanical, whatever. I've found that dressier watches, for me, end up collecting a bit of dust. I just don't where them much... and I feel like I can dress up my farer, brew or seiko if needed.

Great collection, similar taste to my own. I’d prob recommend a Seiko diver of some sort, so many to choose from that you could have fun trying to find one. But really you have most of your bases covered right now!

Btw, I never had a Brew but I didn’t realize how big it was. Looks very large when placed next to other watches.

Thanks! Seiko diver is a nice idea, have also considered their new gmt, but seems a little big... and yes, the brew is a little bigger than my other watches, but still works well.

·

Your going to need a bigger case

·

I would add some color to it. Maybe an American microbrand in a funky color.

You can look at Lorier, Traska, DuFrane, Nodus. They all have some nice affordable options

I’m telling ya! That watch is gonna slap! Have you tried it on yet? Highly recommend it.

I have not.

·

Take a look at the Timex Waterbury Chrono. Not terribly expensive, fills the Timex void, and has great color.

Good idea... been trying to find the "right" Timex.

Looks like a thoughtful/fun collection! Budget is going to be the biggest way to help direct but how about a GMT?

Definitely... a few others have mentioned the same. A couple of the watches I've considered for the last spot are Traska Venturer, Timex GMT and Seiko GMT. Any recommendations?

Well if your trying to be a couple hundred bucks you can’t beat the Seiko. Their new GMT seems like a great value proposition. I’m not a big micro brand guy although I do very much like what Baltic brings in the way of value and quality. I don’t have any experience with the others you mentioned.

Yeah, I tried the Seiko on and it felt a little big. I love my Baltic diver... will keep an eye out for other options.

Very cool... Not super familiar with NG. Will take a closer look.

Another great recommendation. I've been going back and forth between the idea of a gmt or pilot's watch.

How about satisfying both with a GMT Pilots watch? The new Longines Zulu time is coming out in 39mm and looks amazing.

Have considered many times but can’t seem to get past the nearly 15mm thickness.

It's a chronograph so it's gonna be a tad thicker. For whatever reason it doesn't feel that thick.
