I prefer quartz, am i the only one?

When it comes to watches, the thing i like the most is the design. So when a watch brand propose a quartz version and a mechanical version of a same watch, i'll get the quartz. I just think you get more for your bucks! Accurate, good quartz watches are really durable, more of the money goes into the case/crystal/ etc... Wich are more important to me...

Yea, i just prefer quartz i guess... But don't get me wrong, i still like the romanticism of mechanicals and i will alway's own some ;)

I like 'em both.

And although I have way more automatics and manual winds I don't find them romantic at all, and despite what some might say, they DO NOT have souls.

I like quartz; no fuss, keeps time, easy to maintain. It’s an age thing.

About the age thing, you might be right. I used to swear by mechanicals when i got in the hobby, but as time went by i grew to prefer quartz.

I like both, for me it's what do I want from that watch?

Although with quartz my preference is definitely solar powered.

·

Most of my watches are automatics but I do have a couple citizens (eco drive) that I wear often and really like.

I have found that I prefer the idea of the complex mechanics inside an automatic, but still enjoy the accuracy, value, and durability of quartz.

·

I've got both automatics and quartz (I've got about 30 watches) but I much prefer the quartz and plan only to buy those from now on. Solar powered quartz watches are the best, I think.

·

I like both quartz, and mechanical watches. I went through a no quartz phase, but I'm back to appreciating both now.

·

I have a few automatics that I love, but I also have a quartz Bulova dress watch and a Tissot that are two of my favorites. I love the grab and go simplicity.

I don't like the loud ticking noise, but of course they don't all have that problem. I mostly am ok with quartz watches when there are no seconds hand. I love the Cartier Santos-Dumont on the higher end, and Brew's Retrograph on the affordable end.

Indeed. I don’t mind quartz watches as long as the seconds hand is not included. I really cannot take the per second ticking, it is just an ocd I guess?

As much as i just said i love quartz, the second hand HAS to hit the markers. When i pay 500-600$ for a watch, to me the second hand hitting the mark is a minimum. For a 200$ watch, i can deal with it missing the marks slightly.

Well like many others. I’ll say I like both. and that’s probably why I’m odd and wear two. I usually like to have a chronograph on the left. but generally mechanical chrono’s tend to be expensive. so I opt to wear my citizen avion chronograph eco drive. then on the right I’ll wear a mechanical of some description. that way I’m always getting the best of both worlds. plus I often use my chrono to time my dinner.

·

I like both though I prefer manual-wound/automatics and that’s simply because I enjoy interacting with my watch. I like the tactile feel of winding them, it’s a small thing but a small thing that makes a difference. I also prefer the sweeping hand - so if I get a quartz it’s usually a 2-hander or a chronograph. This is all to say - wear what you love and forget what anyone else thinks. 🙂

Agree that quartz has all the merits mentioned and solar is best.

To me it's about the type of watch. Watches that are design first like Cartier with no second hand are just fine in quartz.

However for a movement first company, it's a tough sell.  If a mechanical movement stops working, you can fix it. Not so easy with quartz.

Plus, can you imagine if JLC made a quartz watch? 😂

Hear, hear. "But it doesn't have a soul."

Puh-leeze.

I think quartz are great especially the early seikos from the 60's and 70's the movements looked amazing. I've actually fallen out of love with automatic watches a little bit just lately I find I'm looking for accuracy and just pick up and go watches 👍

I totally agree with you on the durability, many people think that quartz watches are short lived, they are right when we talk about cheap quartz watches, but if you buy a quality quartz watch it will last for decades, 3 of my Seiko quartz watches are over 30 years old and one is 47 years old and all are still ticking away, I always replace the batteries when needed to keep them happily ticking for decades to come.  I love my quartz watches just as much as my mechanicals.

Yes, exactly! But i would also add that even if a cheap quartz watch will maybe not last that long, it will cost virtually nothing to get it fixed. Also, a cheap quartz longetivity is still better than a cheap mechanical. One must consider cheap vs cheap.

You’re exactly right..

Here's a question for all the quartz guys: Would you like a solar powered mecha-quartz? It would eliminate both of quartz's "problems" - battery changes and the ticking second hand. Would you like such a thing? Is there even such a thing?
