Your definitive - and maybe hypothetical – Two Watch collection

One can dream of the exit watch, the one and only grail watch, for which he/she would sell the whole collection. But instead of finding the horological do-it-all wonder, I find that two watch collections offer more versatility, if not day-to-day diversity.

So here it. How would you build a definitive Two Watch collection, if money wasn’t a consideration ? Yes, I know, it is a big “if”. But maybe your set will be more modest than mine, and that will just be as interesting. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”, he said.

So, what complication would you get and which one to leave aside ?

First a dress watch

I would pick a Laurent Ferrier’s classic microrotor x salon des horlogers, a limited edition of 25 pieces (50.000 chf – did I mention money was not a consideration ?). Sector dial, two shades of blue. On the back you have a gorgeous micro-rotor and a three-day power reserve calibre.

But wow, who am I kidding ? 11 mm thick x 40 mm is too large for my 16mm wrist, for a dress watch at least. In “despair”, I will have to reroute to a Lange Saxonia thin in 37 mm x 5,9mm thick. Manual wound, white gold. 72h power reserve. Around 20k

Yeah, that is more like it. Boring you say ? I call it a refined understatement, for those in the know.

Ok, dress watch – check – How about he second one ? Shall I go with a diver ? A submariner maybe, a Fifty Fathoms ? Well here’s the thing. I don’t think… I need a water resistant tool watch. If I go for risky outdoor activities, I might aswell remove my watch. Or take a Casio. Yes, I know. I’m being borderline heretic. Please forgive me.

Complications, I am not a bif fan of. Let’s say I have a fancy life, I might want to use a GMT one. But some thing that can be retractable. I would go for a Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda GMT Rattrapante. This is platinium, with a split GMT that can hide underneath the hour hand when you don’t need it. Around 25k

Inside, you have a 4,9 mm micro-rotor (again, this is a thing of mine) in a 40mm x 10,7mm case. Well I can handle it, you know, on the week ends. I wore a Tudor North Flag, mind you!

So there is it. My ultimate Two Watch collection, that I will probably never wear. But on dream paper, it rocks. So please share you thoughts on it and on what would be your perfect two watch combo.

Cheers.

Okay my answear changes everytime this question comes up but if money is no object my everyday would be this Audemars Piquet Jumbo ultra-thin in platinum

Image

I love the Royal Oak design and a lot of my collection borrows from it. As for the platinum never seen it in person and I’m curious.

Then because I enjoy doing practical things round the house and playing with my kids plus I’m a big titanium fan I’d go with this G- Shock MRG.

Actually the G-Shock might be a regular ocurrence.

Like Matt, my choices seem to change each time I play this game too, except I do have one constant - the VC Overseas Everest Dual Time.
For today at least, my second pick goes to the IWC 3239.

A 2 watch collection? Sure, go for it. Good luck with that!

Every now and then I have the idea to pair down and consolidate, but I can't bring myself to do it just yet. Good luck!

Today, it's a U50 Pro and a polar 16570 with a flat crystal and the crown at 9:00.

Unable to comply, sorry!

·

I agree! A two watch collection with a dress watch and a sporty watch has so much versatility! Add a Casio beater and it’s perfect! Here’s my picks:

Dress: A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph black dial

Probably my favorite looking dress watch. Absolutely stunning from every angle.

Sporty: Rolex Submariner No Date

I know super basic. But most other sports watches in the higher luxury space are bigger and have no bezel which make them wear even bigger. I have a small wrist and the size and thickness of the Sub is perfect for me. I like the simplicity, no complication dial and the brand heritage.

·

I know you ment 2 watch"case" collection👍

·

Following! This is a good question!

·

Great question… and as many others would say, the answer changes all the time 😎

Like @Vinceeee i think the Overseas Dual Time is a perfect pick for a GADA sports watch but personally would go for this reference for its versatility…

Classy, sporty, functional, love the quick release options (rubber strap option is exceptional… tried it at an AD and felt magical to have on the wrist).

Then for being up there at the pinnacle of the subjective sweet spot between design / engineering / style and luxury for me it‘d have to be the Lange…

If I was stepping a tier down / calling out a pair that I might one day actually own, I’d probably go for an IWC big Pilot perpetual and a Reverso DuoFace. 🤤😍

As you say, the RO's legacy is quite something. It is lovely in this dark green sunburst.

First time I see this IWC. It shares some similarities with the Overseas, I like it!

The French/Swiss extravagant vs. the German pragmatic approach to dress watches 😁

There was a brief moment in time, a few years back, when I had just two watches in the box: My BLNR and my Aqua Terra.

I've added some great watches since, which I thoroughly enjoy... But these two could have had me covered just fine, thinking back on it.

I recently had realistic thoughts about this after getting my Omiwatari. I had the notion that if I could get a Pelagos 39, I’d basically be covered. I’d just wear one of those two and the rest of the collection would be affordable fun.
