Lesser known space watches

Let’s talk about something different from the Speedmaster for a change.

Yes, it was the first watch worn on the moon, and it is a fantastic watch. But what about the others that went to space?

I am thinking of the Breitling Cosmonaute, the Raketa Baikonour, or even the Yema Spationaute that are mentioned less often, but have a space-related history as well.

Do you know of any others?

Do you own/have owned a bit of space history as well?

Let’s give some light to those watches that have accompanied mankind on that great adventure!

I think gshock DW-5600 is a space watch too.

The DW-5600 was on my to-watch list because I wanted a G-Shock in my collection, but I had no idea it was a space watch as well, good find!

Here is another one, the Yema Spationaute from 1982.

It was the first French watch in space, worn by French spationaute Jean-Loup Chrétien during his mission on the Mir space station.

It has an off-centre analog display, with a digital one to show the alarm or another time zone (if I’m not mistaken). It was originally sold on a blue Kevlar strap, which is almost impossible to find nowadays has most of them have badly aged.

The watch itself is not that easy to find in it’s first generation, while a few Spationaute II and III can be found on eBay generally around 300/450€.

For the French readers, there are sometimes a few on LeBonCoin as well.

Ooh, the second and chronograph hands glowing under UV light is a really nice touch!

Nice one!

Raketa wasn't the only Russian watchmaker to have one of their watches go into space. Cosmonaut Georgy Grechko took a Vostok Amphibia with him into space during one of his Soyuz-Salyut missions in the 1970s, and he loved it so much he wrote a letter to Vostok, congratulating them on making such a fine watch. He also often gave them to his friends as gifts.

Omega probably cries themselves to sleep every night wishing Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin gave Speedy Pros to their drinking buddies.

Thanks for the anecdote about Vostok, do you know which model that was? There are so many different amphibias.

Haha, they have been using the Moonwatch aura so much since ‘69 that they probably do not need any more endorsement. Speedy Pros sell themselves on that reputation, and have done so for more than 50 years 😅

I do know that it wasn’t like the ones you can buy today. The 2416b didn't come out until the 80s, so I think the Amphibias before then had manual wind movements, specifically the 2209 (not entirely sure, though, since I only have experience with post-USSR Vostoks). If I had to guess he probably had something like this:(Image failed to load!)

It’s all about the omega x-33 and the seiko rotocall. The polish Unitra Warel is also cool. I did a video on digitals in space at : https://youtu.be/BGbo4ouFr0U (Image failed to load!)

Really nice video, I subscribed to your channel!

I did not know about most of these models, and I just added a few to my wishlist!

Hi there, one that is quite famous is the Bulova moon watch. It's a quartz version these days, but was a mechanical chronograph watch that was worn on the moon as the guy's speedmaster crystal broke and he happened to have taken his Bulova with him, thankfully!

Oh wow! Thanks so much. Yes I think there are some. Ooo space watches from digital land

Can’t forget about the Seiko Pogue! Worn by Col. Pogue in the Skylab 4 mission.

While I don’t own the “true pogue” I have the navy dial and absolutely love it!(Image failed to load!)

Sturmanskie

Yuri Gagarin wore a Sturmanskie on his space flight, making it the first watch in space.  Alexei Leonov wore a Sturmanskie on his spacewalk, making it the first watch worn on a spacewalk.

·

John Glenn wore a Heuer 2195A stopwatch on a wrist strap!  12 hour counter, perfect for multiple orbits.  Why TAG doesn't cash in on the space watch things baffles me.

·

Someone mentioned it earlier; the Bulova Lunar Pilot.(Image failed to load!)

I have recently discovered the Seiko Pogue and it's really good looking!

I don't quite have the budget for one right now, but it's definitely going on the list!

I think that Leonov wore a Strela chronograph on the first spacewalk. It's next to my Bulova Lunar  Pilot in the photograph below. I also have a Sturmanskie Gagarin.

Fortis is a great brand, I own a Fortis Spacematic and it's literally unmatched for the price/quality you are getting + if you are into space/history you can't go wrong with the most worn watch in space.

Do you have the black PVD version? I was torn between the one I have and that one, because I wanted one without a date complication. Any plans to get the anniversary edition? I'd love that one.

I do have the black one, I went thru a Bulova phase and got three, including the polished one and the original one with the date on a bracelet. I would love the anniversary one but do find unfortunately that they are a quite large watch lug to lug so don't suit me too well, so I'll pass on that one ! Only really noticed that after getting the third one lol☹️ which one did you get in the end?

Sturmanskie is often looked over. It is a classic piece and I would like to have it as part of my collection.
