Lets talk packaging

Testing out the samples of my new packaging. I'm happy with it, establishing a brand aesthetic for other accessories and merchandise. Part of my personal view on packaging for watches is that across the industry it is hugely wasteful in both logistics, materials, and your space once you own it. Though, there is no denying the first impression of a big wooden glossy box has - but how long does that last?

Well for me it comes down to price. If I'm paying many thousands of dollars then I expect the unboxing experience to match the quality of the watch itself. With that being said, I would have much preferred a usable case instead of the plethora of fake Pelican diver boxes or cheap card board boxes I got with watches when I first started collecting.

·

I agree that you don’t need a wooden box, but I wished it had a bit more identity. It looks like a travel pouch from Ali express with your branding. So depending on the price for the watch it might be lackluster. So personally if the watch is below 500$ I would be totally fine with this packaging but over that mark i would be disappointed.

This is no mean to offend your choice just my personal opinion 😅

·

I'm paying for the watch not fancy shmancy packaging

·

I have a watch roll with three slots, but if I were going on a short weekend trip, this leather ORION case would be cool to have for my Hellcat.

You're right about the fancy boxes. I would imagine that most people who are collectors probably have a dedicated multi-slot watch box versus keeping their watches individually in their presentation cases.

I took a look on aliexpress and based one what I saw, I disagree. I'm also not entirely sure how much 'personality' you can give a simple watch pouch while maintaining things like reasonable cost and simple functionality. It matches the other forms of accessories, like the wallet and lacquered wooden box. I think it's functional and simple - and in simplicity there's elegance. I'd love to see a watch pouch you consider impressive.

·

First off, your watches are awesome! Absolutely love your brand! I have to agree: a beautiful watch box upon receiving a new watch is great!.... and then who cares? This leather case works for travel or storage

Well I knew the aliexpress thing would hit…

Let’s get to the personality point first;

If it’s a diver the watch box could be made from driftwood, for a dress watch cocobolo or ebony would be nice. A different approach could be using a wood from the region the brand is from. So where I’m living at the moment that could be Nara. And yes simplicity is elegant, but not the only factor.

To your pouch you have a round brand symbol, I’d make it tubular and suspend the watch inside 😅

I hoped you wouldn’t take offense with my criticism, anyways again in depends on the price of the watch, I usually throw away the packaging anyways.

·

Seems like you intentionally said it to get a response which is a lame thing to do. But you got your attention. I don't really consider it criticism so much as rude bait to get a response and that's not very cool or respectful. Even strange is that you admitted to knowing it "would hit". I'll leave this up as a learning moment on not great behavior, there are lots of people who would be happy to have some of my time and wouldn't resort to disrespectful bait disguised as criticism to get it.

Nick, thank you for sharing. For me, the smaller the box, less packaging the better. I love my Speedmaster, but that box is downright obnoxious. 7x5 (about Rolex size) is about as large as any nice box needs to be, but in the micro space? Nah, give me a small form factor. Farer does this well, Oak and Oscar, etc. A small box, custom pouch, call it a day. Been around the hobby for too many watches to care about presentation boxes. In fact, I will not pick on any one particular popular British brand, but I was simply annoyed with a recent watch pick up because the box was over the top for what it needed to do.

I agree, I have a couple omegas (got them 70% off, who could resist) and the boxes, while nice, are exorbitant and total space hogs. Knowing how much those things cost to make and the kind of margins that Omega rolls into their product I'd much prefer a more conservative packaging than what is most likely, a substantial price increase to cover the inclusion of the box.

Yep! Slim enough to fit in a pocket (fit well enough, I suppose). I think so much packaging in the industry is overwrought and adds a lot to the markup, trying to avoid that!

Absolutely. If a the difference for a small watch maker, especially those that have to save everywhere they can, means I can have a nicer movement or nicer packaging? Keep the packaging.

·

I love the idea that packaging has use, other than take space in my closet. I keep all of my boxes, but haven't used any of them for anything.

·

Beautiful pouch - will you make that available to purchase?

·

Now that is packaging!

·

If it is real leather I would preffer it to be burned/pressed in to it.

Since printet logo's on leather falls off with time.

But love the design!

·

Love it ! I hate big boxes !! Longines and Omega and even some Seiko Luxe has obnoxious boxes!! Love the pouch!! Even Zelos was really nice with their new packaging of three watch travel roll!! Which I use all the time and convenient!!

·

Tbh u think you’re design looks so great , what about maybe selling it as a Watch etui so people can buy it for the watches they already own 🤔and yes I think the way omega did it on their newish boxes are perfect, because you get the nice box and all that but if you lift up the inlay there you have your little watch box for traveling which I’ve used every time since I own the watch

·

I gotta be honest. I love a finely crafted watch box. I was surprised and happy to see how nice the Orion box is. It’s as nice as my Zenith or Longines boxes.

It’s not that I see the boxes often but I know they are there. I remember opening each box for the first time and the feeling I get from finding a beautifully finished case inside the shipping packaging.

Maybe I’m the weird guy that just doesn’t get it. I just think boxes are part of the whole package and establishes the brand identity.

I think it's perfect. I'd much rather have a useful, compact storage item than an expensive, marked-up box for a one-time "experience". Watch sleeves are underrated.

·

I keep all my boxes, but leather is something I'll use. Does the Hellcat arrive in this?

Lol. I see an Orion box in the 3rd row.

·

While boxes are nice, beautiful even, they are objectively useless, unless one perhaps keeps the watch in it. But then how many watches can be kept in boxes and readily accessible? Two, three? The shelf space runs out fast. So what I realized is that these boxes almost comedically suggest this is the only, or one of the few watches I own! To which I smirk, and put the box in the closet to never see the light again. From commercial standpoint luxury box had become an expectation. From a practical standpoint for collectors they had become a nuisance.

Maybe moving to Apple packaging strategy could be a compromise? A box that is beautiful and luxurious, and yet entirely of paper and cardboard?

However, designing and manufacturing such box would not be any cheaper than a wooden one, considering labor and custom manufacturing equipment, but the environmental impact would obviously be much smaller. Let’s hope the industry trend to move away from leather in watch straps picked up by some luxury brands will spread to wasteful packaging too.

As for Orion packaging, the box vs pouch argument is moot to me. Nobody will pass a good watch even if it’s shipped in a paper bag (as long as it’s well packaged 😅). Nobody will buy a watch for its box.

I can do that

Oh yeah, there’s no denying the lacquer box the calamity comes in is nice - I use a smaller and less fancy cardboard box for the hellcats (that lacquer box cost way too much to make). So this is about the white eco box, upping the presentation a little bit with the inclusion of a nice leather pouch
