The Mystery of SNXS79

As some of you may know, my purchase of this watch was not planned. I thought I had a good 3-Japanese-Watch collection going on, and I merely wanted to try this watch as part of Amazon's Try-Before-You-Buy program. How naive I was!

Image

Quick recap: the watch on paper is nothing extraordinary. The watch is 37mm with 30m WR, with the legendary but also tolerable 7S26 movement. Crystal is mineral, the bracelet is flimsy.

The dial, on the other hand, is extraordinary. The taupe, sunburst finish "plays with the light" so beautifully while also looking like a lacquered black dial in lower light settings. It's easy to get lost in it and stare at it for a good while.

Image

The watch does resemble Rolex's DateJust. The stick indices, the baton hands, there's no denying it and everyone knows it. And like the DateJust, the watch is extremely versatile.

It goes well with oversized padded jackets.

Image

It works fine with a shirt and jacket.

Image

It goes well with short sleeves.

Image

Sure, one day I'll get that DateJust and the SNXS79 will get less wrist time. But even with its obvious faults, it's a watch with irresistable charm. Until the day finally comes, I look forward to enjoying the watch even more and hopefully mod it to make up for some of its short comings.

Big fan. I have the SNXS77:

And I was thinking on Thursday exactly what you said in this post. 👍 Versatile, great all-around watch!

Very awesome, the blue must be stunning in person as well.

How much is it these days?

Understated classic 👌

Some are pushing $200 I think, but more are like ~$150.

They’re getting more expensive across the board. Brand new Seiko SNK803s and 805s on Amazon are $225 now!

Those old SNK80x field watches really aren’t worth it new whatsoever, but like the one pictured above can easily be found secondhand for usually less

Wow. They're all very nice watches but those are some steep prices!

Sounds like used is definitely the way to go. That's how I picked up my SNXS.

Oh for the days of the $50 SNK on Amazon.

The J version I got on Amazon new was 150$, K versions seem to be closer to 120$.

They really hit it out of the park with these ones!

Yep, K's are ~ $110 currently (Jshop & Amazon).

Still really great for that much.

I agree, though 200$ would have been a bit much for me. 150$ was acceptable.

Very true, the overall design and dial make them so captivating. I have the snxs73 and an older dark grey one from 1991 running on the 7009 movement.

Now I'm wondering if I should've got the 73 instead.

I can imagine. For the price they are truly amazing

I did try before you buy on this piece as well. It went back, but I intend on buying one soon. I love it because of the vintage Seiko vibe without the hassle of vintage watch ownership.

I’d like to buy this and do a few things. Firstly, swap the movement to an NH36 (easier said than done) I’d also really like to swap the crystal for an acrylic one if possible. Finally I’d change the bracelet out for a solid link aftermarket option.

I’m so envious of people getting $50 SNK80#s. I really really want one but wouldn’t spend over $100 for one used, unless it came with extra straps

Both 73 and 79 are nice in their own way. 😉

SNXS75 here. It's just very versatile and wears way beyond its price point. Removing links is a real chore though

That's my current plan for my SNXS79 except sapphire instead of acrylic 🙂

I have a similar Seiko, but not a Seiko 5? I am trying to determine the production year. I am coming up with 1985 or 1995? Strange! Love the watch, just looking for more information.

From the serial number likely 1989... first number is the last digit of a year. I think the 7009 ended production in 1996.

Thank you! That makes sense. It looks so much like the Seiko 5’s.

Thank you! That would be nice as I graduated from high school in 1989🤝
