About the official launch of the Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch:

Obviously, they were not prepared enough for the crazy queues outside the stores. Sydney, for example, had 3000 people waiting outside, but only 150 watches were actually available. Due to the long lines at some of the places across Asia, many stores have decided not to open. In Europe, there are thousands standing outside the stores, and there are often no fences, so people are literally crowding around the storefronts.

They should have gotten some advice from Apple.

Just saw an Instagram Story from inside a London Swatch store. Was absolute chaos. The police were having to stop people getting in.

They should have done some kind of lottery system.

Do people have nothing better to do on a Saturday than stand around waiting for hours outside a shop? Sad.

·

Wow 😬  Just be careful people, and remember it's only a watch at the end of the day. I hope people remember that and everyone stays chill. 👌

I told myself I'd go at 7AM because I have nothing better to do this Saturday, then I saw videos of the lineup on my Facebook watch group and knew immediately I would not be getting it. Like I would not be able to get an allocation.

Now to play the game of time

·

Craziness and sad to see the flippers already doubling the price on eBay.    Wonder how long they wait until making them avail online.

·

Completely unawaited, this hype ... thought that was a great move (though it baffles me they moved the subdials, completely ruined the watches' design for me) but didn't expect THAT much!

·

That's crazy madness 🤯

People who got the MoonSwatch in Madrid have been there waiting from yesterday afternoon.

Today I arrived at the Swatch store at 8:45am and there were like 70+ pieces available for around 500 people waiting outside.

After the "situation", I went to take a look at the MoonSwatch behind the window, and then I went to a different Swatch AD, where I took a look at Bioceramic watches. It feels 100% like plastic.

I have been collecting watches for years, and this release does not deserve my attention anymore as watch enthusiast. It's a quartz, plastic chronograph for 250€.

·

This is nuts. I‘m curious, how many people in line just learned about Omega & the Moonwatech through this release? How many don’t really care about watches, but do care about hype?

I don’t think this is a good look for the watch industry... although it may help get a few more people into the hobby.

Watch collectors are an unruly crowd, for sure. 😂

·

Crazy, tried going in Madrid. Lines shorter than I see in photos, but long anyway. Let’s see how it goes following days, They were clearly not prepared. Why not sell online, or even put appointments. I mean, it seems they want the chaos.

Hahaha I did think that 😂

Especially in the UK where queuing is a national sport

·

Those who wait and order online in a month or so will get the last laugh. Wait even longer and by July they'll be selling for 200 bucks on the secondary market.

Anyone remember the Timex Marlin Snoopy?

I got into watches around 8 years ago and it aligns with getting more involved in Instagram. So in a way I guess I’m apart of this whole thing too…but this sure has been a strange week with my perspective on the scale/number of Watch enthusiasts.

I always read it’s such a niche community etc. And I’m sure in the grand scheme of things still very much is. But this weekend is the first time in 8 years that I have been like wait what? There’s this many people interested in speedy adjacent stuff? I guess if Rolex did something like this in person with GMTs we would see it personified like this, but since it’s always just online talk about how 1 or 2 people at a time go to store and have to wait it just doesn’t feel the same as seeing the lines.

I’ve just kind of been like woah wait how big is the community because of seeing actual videos and photos of the lines.

·

mission failed i guess 😂😂. have to wait online for this, only if the bioceramic feels good

·

The craziest thing is that people already had them listed on eBay the day the leak happened. Presumably banking on getting a couple today and flipping them while the hype is at fever pitch. Hope none of them got any!

·

its exciting to see a watch other than apple drawing a crowd like this. i guess no one’s scared of Omicron anymore.

·

People already selling the watches at crazy prices. I've even seen some flippers making a x10 profit right outside of the store.

by Omega and Swatch 😂

·

Just crazy, I guess I will have to wait a while to pick up a few.

·

just went to ebay; there are so many Swatches that I would rather have for a fraction of the price.

The best one of these is $6500 for Uranus (+$10 for shipping).  🤣

·

Just stopped by at 6 am 4 hours before opening at my local Vancouver store to scope the craziness, and oh boy!, even parking was getting out of hand. Hundreds(very very long lineup) of people already waiting thinking they'll walk away with a watch! I'm just a collector who already have 4 "real" speedy and hoped for maybe the "moon" version as an addition, but I'm not going to cave into this nonsense. What has this Hobie become is leaving me perplexed. Not sure how many flippers there hoping to make a quick buck reselling them, all I know is that watch collecting is starting to give me a bad taste...I might be looking into something else to collect...(just joking here...,maybe I'll keep microbrands exclusively)

I think it’s a mix of communities. The majority aren't apart of the watch community as we know it, but rather hype (think Supreme). A few of them might end up in the watch community along the way. Heck they may even change it by bringing a fresh perspective.

Ahhhh I see. That definitely makes more sense.

To be fair to swatch, no one could have predicted this. If you and I ran it and were twice as prepared as they were, it would have still not been near enough.

Who would have thought the release of a watch, in 2022, would be bigger than a gaming console, or the early iPhones?

Hopefully they've learned their lesson and the next event will be better prepared. I don't think it is necessarily the watch itself, but more of a cultural thing and the burning desire to own a luxury brand at a fraction of the price. The same could apply to a Gucci coat collaborating with Uniqlo or an LV bag collaborating with Samsonite.

As much as I love watches I would not waste my time waiting out there. I just go to another store buy me a nicer watch than that one.
