My one year old son dropped my other Baby (the Alpinist that is). And now it's broken ๐ญ Getting a watchmaker to fix it would cost me 400-500$. That's about what I can get a new one for on a good sale or used.
I really didn't expect it to be so fragile, being a Seiko Prospex and all..ย
But I used my insurance for once and sold the rest as a repair project, so I'm close to what I would have gotten if I sold it before it broke.
I think I might just put the money away for now as I'm saving up for a Blue Bay 36. And I'm very happy that it was a Seiko and not a Tudor this happend to ๐ฅณ

Well that's certainly a kick in the jewels. Keep the receipt and tell him owes when he gets old enough๐.ย
I'd see if I could get a replacement movement and have a go at fixing it yourself.ย

I'll deduct it from his heritage ๐คฃ I'm pleased with how things turned out with insurance and a low sale ๐ I'll have to live with two watches for a while until I can afford my Grail.
Shame to happen to such a great dial!ย
When you said that "is is broken", are you referring to the movement. If so, I agree that a movement swap shouldn't be too hard.
Ow, that is terrible.. ๐ข
If I can suggest a store to replace this watch I can mention Sakura Watches (Seiko JDM Importer).
A lot of my Seikos come from them and I never had any problem importing them to Canada.
ย
I hope that helps if you decide to just replace it.

Oh no! I thought the Alpinist series was supposed to be a tough field watch. How high of a drop was this?
Ah the joys of having both children and mechanical watches.ย
This is why we canโt have nice things.

Alpinists can take mountains and oceans and mother natures wrath just fine. ย I just tortured my Alpinist with a week at sea getting routinely banged on a kayak. ย
But - Even a Gshock would be promptly slain by the average cunning toddler.
A trail of destruction followed my daughter for yearsย
This is why I didn't let my kitten borrow my nice watches until he turned 16.
Could be a good opportunity to learn basic movement replacement? Much much cheaper if you do it and whatโs the worst that could happen? You break it some more?
Sorry, just noticed just a watch fan suggested the same!
Plenty of videos showing how to do so.
Hey!! It's OK for grown men to cry in the shower.... I'm gonna make a parade and big stink about this!!

The dail is fine. It was the balancespring that got the hammer.. I hope the guy who bought it will bring it back to life ๐

Is it a MoonSwatch? He looks kinda pissed ๐คช

True, but I wouldn't want to do it. I think it was a good solution I ended on ๐ย

I'm gonna live a empty and meaningless existance with only two watches until I can afford the BB36 ๐ But thanks for the TIP!!

Half a meter tops, dropped on a soft wooden floor!! Must just been bad luck ๐ค Should be fine 999 of 1000 drops?

Well, yeah. If your insurance paid for it, there is truly no loss on your side.

No, every drop is a gamble. There is a reason G-Shocks aren't automatic. Moisture and drops kill automatic watches, the same way that battery leaks bring on the end of quartz watches.

Totally OK with sobbing in the shower

I strapped my real Speedy on him for the Weekly photo theme: #6 Chronos and C.... thread.ย
He always looks pissed. He's old and cranky and he's fighting a sinus infection. But he tolerated the most expensive watch I own! ๐พ

I have dropped several watches this is the first one that busted...
That is a huge bummer. One could easily swap in an NH35 for under $100, but at the cost of ~30 hrs power reserve. Seiko really needs to release a generic version of its 6r movements!ย

I don't doubt that. Depending on how it falls, it may be okay. You just have no certainty. There are people who broke their watches when their wrists hit something while walking. My cheap Invicta survived a drop onto a linoleum floor. Would I try my luck again? No, definitely not.
In contrast I could drop my G-Shock onto that floor all day long.
Get a g shock for the kids to chew on and such.ย
My guess is that 25 years from now, you may wish you still had that broken watch so you could look at it and remember your boy when he was inquisitive, innocent and unaware of the value of material objects.

Maybe ๐ค I guess he will breake plenty around the House before he learns that. I keep a mark somewhere else ๐
