Patience and Frustration

Just a quick rant.

2023 was my first year being seriously interested in watches. It was both fun and exciting, learning more about what watches there are and which one(s) might be right for me. In short order I purchased seven pieces of different styles, and learned a lot about myself along the way. My vintage Breitling is a true work of art, and at the end of summer I got one of my (affordable) grail watches, an Omega Seamaster DeVille. After that, however, I felt I needed to reign in my spending a bit.

That was seven months ago. I've had my sights on one specific model for almost a year (a Seiko Speedtimer), looking at pictures of it almost every day, but I just haven't felt I could justify spending more money on watches so soon. And, well, after seven months of waiting, lusting and drooling, I must admit that all that pent up desire is starting to turn into frustration. And perhaps apathy.

Watches, as a hobby, are supposed to be fun, but right now my feelings of frustration are cooling me down. Perhaps especially since I know I could buy pretty much any watch right away IF I could justify the cost to myself. But I can't. It all highlights my internal conflict between prudence and Ego; between investment portfolio and silly fun.

Where was I going with this? Ah yes: Conflicting emotions.

Watches are not going away, will still be around if and when you decide to resume your investigations. I remained keen but did not buy a single new watch until I managed to balance marriage, mortgages, daughters, established my own professional office a few fun trips to visit foreign cities. A time might arrive when buying a new watch can be no more than a small reward for surviving the daily grinds.

We all go through these emotions… for me that’s an everyday occurrence … some folks can attest to that… at times best to chill out and eat a donut…

Image

See don’t you want one…

You still thinking about the speetimer…??!!

Ok here’s another donut…

And look goes well with coffee…

Indeed, what level of spending on fun stuff is responsible what is not is - and must be - an ongoing topic for discussion. A bit of fun is good and important, but there can be too much of a good thing.

I live across the street from one of very few Krispy Kreme donut shops in the city. A lot of friends and family beg my wife and me to buy dozens for people who pretend to not eat them. I allow myself an occasional Apple Cinnamon almost as often as I buy a new watch.

We're in this together! 🤝

Even though I don't think I've actually had a donut for well over a decade... Perhaps I should do something about that.

Been about 20 minutes since my last donut. Time to go see if there are any left in the breakroom 😉

The world would be a better place if everyone just stopped and got a donut, or an apple fritter!

go pre-owned....maybe that would justify the cost

Maybe, yes. Pre-owned Speedtimers don't seem to come up for sale around here very often though.

·

You can love watches without buying every model you like, or even buying at all. For me watches are not a hobby but a passion.

Once I learnt to appreciate what I already have I ended up downsizing and don't intend to buy any more for the foreseeable future

No hobby is worth stressing over

·

Maybe you need to pause a bit and try to enjoy the ones you have. Buying 7 watches in first year is a lot and obviously this is not a normal pace to continue with. It seems you are in a phase where the hit of new watch is what drives you forward, hence need to cool down a bit. Stay positive, enjoy watches you have and even ones you don't. It will pass and you will enjoy them once again

·

In watches it's very easy to get caught up with "keeping up with the joneses," without realizing you're doing it. Just remember that watches aren't going anywhere, and you can like and appreciate things without having to own them.

·

LMFAO 🤣. Oh man, I think you might be preaching to the choir here my friend. I know exactly what you are going through.

Don't worry it doesn't get easier or better. Just change the brand.. Seiko, Hamilton, Bulova, Omega, Tudor, G-Shock, back to Seiko... For me now it's Marathon.. keep looking at the Arctic Diver GSAR. But can't justify the $. Until I will. (With the blessing of the Wife)

Regardless it's still fun. Enjoy.

My nephew who has painfully inherited quite a collection of very special watches from family members prefers to not wear a watch, however the young man makes decent donuts and fritters since he also does not need to hold down a regular job.

Maybe you are right. Seven watches in a year is a lot. I have no desire to own a lot of watches, but for me it felt like the only way to try to find out what I really like. Type, style, size... Although, I'm not sure I am much closer to the answer still. 😅

Thank you - I think! 😁

Maybe give Chrono24 a try.

I have heard good things about Chrono24. Might give it a try someday.

Have you purchased something there?

Yes, I purchased a Longines from an authorized dealer off the site.

·

I feel the same way, at the beginning of the year, I was like I’m done buying. Then, for a couple of days I got watch shopping fatigue, 🤣😂.

Then I bought this:

Image

I felt somewhat guilty for the first time…..so, to make myself feel better, I shifted. I sold off a bunch of my watches, that were “entry level” pieces and paid myself back.

Now, I think I need to slow down with buying and enjoy what I have, but also be more selective.

Maybe that could be your strategy?

·

I stopped buying for almost a month once. It was hard.

·

I have a box with six slots. Six is my number of watches. To buy a new one, an older must leave.

I'm doing fine so far.

·

Ahh I remember the good old days, its fine my friend don't worry only a couple more years of theses feelings, then one day it will pass, and you will just accept it OK that's where my money goes,I buy watches,😂👌or you will have gone mad and only be able to say tick tock, ether ways good my friend nothing to worry about 🤣

The watches don't have to go in the box,you have more room for them elsewhere 🤪🙄😂

·

It's not about watches, that's about equanimity. 😌

See, this was what I was secretly hoping for: encouragement from fellow addicts, to not worry and to just spend more money on watches. 😉
