Is it worth it?

I have the money saved, I

make a good living blah blah blah but I’m still on the fence about dumping 12 K on a Rolex. I do love watches and have multiple I’m just not sure if I want do this. I get close to pulling the trigger and step back. Anybody else have this issue? Thanks crunchers!

If you have second thoughts you shouldn’t do it. Not even if it was just 20$

·

If there is any doubt… there is no doubt. Don’t do it unless you are all in.

·

If you are on the fence, then don't do it. At the end of the day, it's a ridiculous amount of money for a redundant, outdated fashion accessory from a luxury brand charging a luxury premium for stainless steel, so it's perfectly normal to feel conflicted about this irrational unnecessary expense.

·

Step back, you don't love it enough. I had same with explorer in my mind, but passed on it when the time came. Nice for sure, but it didn't spark "joy" when I was up close. Making rational arguments, I know I'd be just kidding myself. I'd advise, for that outlay, try on a few watches to find an emotive response. You'll know when you know.

·

About a year ago, I spent close to that on a Glashütte Original. For reference: alll my other watches are between $100 and $3.5k max. But I had no doubt or hesitation: that was the watch I wanted. And thankfully, no regrets since! So entirely up to you ofc, but i would not spend that amount if I was on the fence…

·

With kids and a mortgage I couldn't imagine spending that on a watch today. But going by the way your phrasing a major purchase, "dumping," I don't think you should.

Totally agree 👍🏻

Fortunately for me, and rather unfortunately for my bank account, I had the opposite reaction 😐🤣

The thing about Rolex is that if you buy it and decide you made a mistake, you can always sell it for what you paid, maybe a bit more. Other brands, not so much.

·

I like to look at it as 2 tier

  1. How much would I get in an emergency and I needed to sell because these things are just objects not as important as real life needs.

  2. The difference between that and the sales price is my cost to own

So if the cost to own is around like 3k even though your spending 12k then your really just spending 3k and moving 9k into a “savings account” you can wear

·

It's similar to many questions regarding this brand: The answer is "no" if you have to ask.

·

I can’t imagine walking around in public with $12k strapped to my wrist.

·

Get the watch you want, not because you have the money saved. If it doesn’t mean anything you will soon regret your decision…but for what’s it’s worth a Rolex will probably keep its value more than any other watch. So the 12k aren’t necessarily “dumped” …

·

Absolutely! Any time I have to drop a huge amount of money on a watch I give it a lot of thought. For me, at the end of the day, it goes down to two factors: 1. Will I love and use the watch all the time? If yes, then it’s an obvious purchase. 2. I look at this as an investment too. Maybe I will not have to sell my watch on my life time but perhaps when I pass away, and my family is in a difficult financial situation, they can sell all of my watches and make good money for themselves. Or maybe if I don’t have a family, and I’m the one in a similar situation, I could sell some of them to get back on my feet. This is just my train of thought and opinion on this of course. I’m sure everyone else is different and have their own reasons to do things. Which are all valid of course.

Would you be okay with a Tudor and a vacation?

Indeed. If you're having second thoughts at spending that amount of cash, don't spend it.

I feel the same. I just can’t do it. I have a couple of nice gmt that I wear all the time. Can’t bring myself to pay 12k+ for a Rolex gmt.

Especially when you can get the same functionality for thousands upon thousands less

I look at watches over $5k as investment pieces and not so much for the love of the hobby. Just my opinion. If I can’t wear it ans enjoy it without hurting myself financially I don’t see a point in it unless it’s just to make money and not to be worn.

That VAST majority of watches lose value the moment they are purchased.

99.9% are in no way, shape or form investments.

If you want a pretty investment you can play with, buy precious metals

·

If you use the word ‘dumping’ when referring to purchasing something, then it’s probably not worth it (to you).

·

Rolex Schmolex. I get more pleasure from getting more value and less hype for less money

I have two tudors and yes, I love a good vacation

Don't do it. Especially if you're on the fence.

Having had 2 Rolexes already I can say that they're good watches, but ultimately they're just watches. I didn't find the to be anything special - it's just a watch after all.

Honestly, if you're looking for a luxury watch that delivers all the performance, has serious brand heritage, will last for decades, and doesn't have the over inflated cost, then I'd be looking at Tudor or Grand Seiko.

The caveat, of course, is if you work in a profession where wearing a Rolex is a wealth signal your clients/superiors will be paying attention to (I was there for a time). In that case, absolutely buy the Rolex. That's part of the cost of doing business.

At the very least, with your misgivings, hold off for a while and see how you feel in 6 months or a year.

Yes, I have a couple Tudors an Omega and a couple other watches. I just feel like it’s time to step up to the plate, but that’s where I’m at. Thank you for your perspective. 👍

Well I was assuming since it was a post about Rolex that’s what the majority of people buy them from AD’s as investments.

·

Personally in this economy and inflated Rolex prices - I would stand down young blood! 12K can go into a lot of different investments that will actually make you a lot more monies. With the new Tudor release this watch here at shy of $6K would be a better dumping ground LOL 😂. Good luck with your decision and power to you for saving up that sum of monies 🍻👊🏽

OR you can buy the Invicta 1953 at $230 and invest the $11770 into your retirement funds - travel and create memories 🙏🏽

I never got to the second thought. I think spending that kind of money is almost completely insane. When there are such outstanding GMT watches out there at a fraction of that price. They will definitely out last you, me and our kids. The Lorier Hyperion, Seiko GMT’s, Traska, Jack Mason, Squale, Citizen… the list is nearly endless, and you could frankly buy all of them for the price of one lovely Rolex…. I love Rolex, and I own an air king. But that GMT Master II is WAYoverpriced for its market. IMHO

·

I'm irresponsible,I say go for it & sod the consequences 😈👍

·

Take part of that money and buy a nice watch at a price that wouldn’t make you worry about scratching it or getting mugged. Wear it for a while and see if after a while you feel like getting that Rolex.

I saved up for a really nice watch several times. Didn’t pull the trigger and went for smth simpler first two times. Exactly because I felt I would be too worried about it. Recently bought by dream watch after saving up money for the third time.
