Mr Jones Watches A Perfectly Useless Afternoon Review

Looking at this Mr Jones Watches watch, it looks like Fun watch or is it You look like a Fun guy. Designed by Kristof Devos, it has an underlying message that reminds you to take it easy and spend time enjoying the moment. If you didn’t get the message that’s fine, I didn’t get it either. Maybe you were mesmerised by that fun swimming pool dial or the fun colours or that guy in the middle or even that rubber Duckie. No? I was not mesmerised either. First time I saw the watch, I was more intrigued to find out how the heck do I tell the time. (For those who are still figuring this out - the guy in the middle with the extended legs, points at the hour. The rubber duckie tells you the minutes.)

By now, I’m sure you would have figured it out that the ‘hands’ are really rotating disks. This means you would need to stare incessantly at it just to see the rubber duckie float a minute at a time. Wouldn’t it be great if they had put in a ‘seconds’ hand or disk, like a leaf or a smaller duckie, so that you wouldn’t waste your entire minute just to see some kind of movement. Mr Jones if you are reading this - how about that. You could call that ‘Another Perfectly Useless Afternoon’

Anyway, it is a conversation starter and some of mine started with ‘Hey how come you are wearing your kid’s watch today?’ And then when I proudly say it’s mine and show it to them, the next question is always, ‘Cor! It tells time? How do you do that?’. I wonder if some of you crunchers think you are too serious to wear a fun watch like that or it just looks too cartoonie or too kiddish. (Heck, I might just run a simple poll for that)

I love this watch, I am wearing it as I write this. I am proud of it so much so that I sometimes contort my wrists just so that people get a good glimpse of it.

It is a real watch not a toy watch but a fun watch (if there is such a category) The specs are great for the money. I’ll just list the specs below for you spec crunchers. Any thing else you can find in the website if you haven’t done so already.

Go on. Have your perfectly useless afternoon.

Idk why I always thought the lug to lug was way bigger on a lot of Mr Jones watches. It's for sure a fun watch, I totally agree it would be nice to have some visible movement, but maybe a lack of seconds is to reinforce the theme of the watch.

nice review!

MJW is an awesome brand! Their designs are super creative and original, at a decent price. Definitely fun to look at and a great conversational starter at any gathering!

I bought the medium size last laugh tattoo dial for my wife a few years back, and she loved it.

So cool

·

Love it!

·

Great design, super fun!

Wow, that minute hand is in fact a small duckie. Thats ducking awesome, i love it! I've seen your other watches, i love that rectangular watch with a dial on the right by Moels and Co also. I would definitely wear this two.

Damn, the rubber duck, it's so, SO cool.

Thanks for the review, This watch has been on my radar, it's helpful to read about your experience and thoughts.

·

I want the useless night version. I'm hoping the website is right and they come out with a new batch soon..

EDIT: Whoa whoa whoa, I looked at the website last night and there was nothing in stock. Except maybe 1 watch.. Now there are a handful that are available, INCLUDING this one! I'm buying it today, there's nothing more to say. I do want the night one, but I'll take the day one any day lol

EXTRA EDIT: Bought it..

·

Fun for a review, not for me to wear. 😉 Thank you for an interesting read!

·

I have never heard of this brand, but looking on their website I now have a burning desire to spend money! I like the graphic watches, but I am also feeling a strong inclination towards the "Memento Mori" style watch with the message, "remember you will die". A good reminder to seize the moment. I also like that they are 37mm. A lot to like, especially that the designs are not boring.

Perhaps you are right about the theme but personally, I would still like some movement nevertheless. Cheers

This inspired me to look at their site again and I found a watch with the text "remember" and "you will die" on the hands. I know what my next watch will be now.

Great! Lemme know when it's on your wrist. Cheers

Wow… I literally joined WatchCrunch today on a whim after wanting to for a while… and one of the first posts I see is this one. I remember seeing this watch a while back on YouTube totally forgot about it.

Instantly bought just now. 💸 Such a fun watch with a price that’s reasonable. Thanks for this post and the inspiration!! 🍻

The night and morning ones are in stock now. Personally the morning one is the nicest one on the site in my opinion.

I do like the leaves and the trees on the morning for sure. I kinda wanted a night and day version of the Perfectly Useless line, because I typically change into a night watch most days. And this would certainly compliment that. But the Afternoon version has to be my favorite outta the line.

·

If any WCers are in London, they now have a small shop in Covent Garden, very friendly and great to look at the watches in person. (I have 'A Perfectly Useless Afternoon' on a bright yellow rubber strap). @honedwatches - Great review Ed, really summed up the character of these watches.

·

Thanks Daniel. Wish I was in London.

·

Good review. I’m a proud owner of the same piece and always use when I’m at the pool… so fun to wear!

I wouldn’t want the seconds hand on it as the whole idea is to have a perfectly useless afternoon. Love this perfectly useless timepiece!!!

·

Hi there, perhaps you are right about the seconds hand. For me, I wouldn’t use it at the pool if I’m going into the water though. Anyway, hope you are enjoying the watch as much as I do. Cheers😊

·

I love your review and love this watch. I would have bought it and it would have been my everyday watch if it weren't for the lug design and WR. For a water theme watch this 50m WR is a joke, I can't even confidently use it in a pool. The lug design seems flimsy and could snap off if I drop it. I know this isn't expensive but still would like a more quality build.

Thanks. There is a beefier Auto version. The XL I think. This one has better lug construction though. Cheers🍻
