Sarb017 - Modern classic

A mesmerizing green dial, applied golden indices, cathedral handset and an inner rotating compass. This Alpinist is such a strange mix of styles, that shouldn‘t work aesthetically on a tool watch, but they just do! I love this watch and it opened my eyes to more daring designs. I started of as primarily a fan of dive watches but with time I found that within the field watches more than in any other watch type lie the real hidden gems. Most field watches are capable tools and can be dressed up or down depending on your specific needs.

The watch is beautiful! One of the best from Seiko. The green on the dial is a joy to look at and the milanese bracelet puts a finer point on the watches aesthetics!

I too was mesmerised

It's on The List. I never get tired of seeing it posted on WC. 👍

I am a super proud owner. I bought one just before they were discontinued. Seeing that I was getting into watches right around the same time, spending around $400 on a watch literally made me sick to my stomach. Years later, the amount of fun and joy I have had from that watch makes every penny spent so worth it. I will never part with it. Dispite watches that were gifted to me or belonged to a late relative, the Sarb017 is my favorite watch and will probably remain at the top even after I get some grails. Enjoy yours!

My sis in law decided to include my older brother’s best childhood friend to my modest birthday lunch in July, he was more my sibling’s buddy than mine but it was still fun to reminisce about when we 3 were still young and stupid. He was talking about wine while I was going on about my watch passion, it was great time. He was wearing an Alpinist, admitted he picked it up because it was inexpensive knew little about it. He gave me a bottle of a Spanish red that he assured me will be a pleasure to enjoy with a thick steak. Not much of a drinker or fan of red meats but childhood friendships are special.

The SARB017 is an icon and one of the last models from Seiko that offered true value.

The prices on the second hand market are too high to recommend it, but when I look at it's successor I can also understand why the price for used SARB went through the roof, because almost every change introduced in the SPB121 is something that I dislike, except for the AR.

I know the reissue isn't the same, but I won't know the difference. I haven't added it yet, but on the list.

Wow, the alpinist is beautiful to look at !!

I remember when this came out and I had the chance to buy it for $300ish. Didn't bite because of the green dial. Now some time has passed and I want it because of the green dial and it can't be found under $1,000 lol

Seiko must have been taking lessons from the Chinese.

Imagine the discussion around the board room table, "Let's discontinue the SARB017", "Ok but what shall we replace it with?", "I don't know, how about an inferior homage but we will say it's better and charge double for it!"

I had a choice to buy new or buy a used SARB017, I know now if I had bought the SPB121 I would never have loved the watch and would still be lusting over the original. This is a watch that is never leaving my collection.

I bought mine about 8 years ago , I sold it at a profit to obtain my Tudor Ranger along with a Sinn 104ST for a small loss so I sort of broke even including posting them . So happy that someone else got to enjoy my SARB017. I am a field watch fan now over a diver actually.
