Christmas came early this year
Nine weeks ago I registered my interest in a 36mm Explorer with the two ADs closest to me. Much to my surprise, on Sunday I got "the call" from one of them and on Monday I picked it up.
I'm not sure I can add much to the story of such a well known model, to some it is an overpriced "plain Jane", to others the epitome of understated tool watch elegance (I fall into the latter group). What I will say is that photographs don't do it justice and that wearing is believing.
I had a positive experience with both ADs when registering interest. Although they both asked if I had any previous purchase history (I didn't) it clearly didn't make any difference (or maybe nobody else in Scotland wants an Explorer). Two points to note : 1. I was asked to sign a statement saying that I wouldn't sell the watch to anyone other than themselves in the first two years of ownership - while this was a surprise I was happy to sign as this is a watch I will hand down to the next generation (and flippers really p*ss me off), 2. They admitted that allocations are not chronological - I wanted this as an end of 2023 retirement present to myself so maybe that helped.
One thing this purchase has done is that it has stopped me thinking about "the next watch". In fact I am now thinking about slimming down my modest collection. The one watch that will definitely be sold will be the Baltany Discoverer , a watch that I enjoyed for a couple of months but more recently the 39mm size and fauxtina lume started to annoy me, and it is never going to win the morning selection process with the real thing now in residence.
Returned to the fold after years in the phone wilderness, ironically after buying a Pixel Watch which re-ignited a love of real watches.

Congrats! Happy you got the call this is a watch to truly be proud of and pass on to your kids. I am in a similar spot as you after getting an explorer II from the AD. I stoped thinking about all other watches and I’ll pretty much only wear this watch daily for life in every situation
