SOTC 2023

Although I sensed a bit of a recent backlash against SOTC posts, I thought I would chance it. If you aren't interested, don't read any more.

This is my SOTC 2022 for comparison. The cheap and nasty Foster's merchandise went to a charity shop. The Duro has been sold (too big). A Baltany Discoverer (39mm Explorer homage) came and went once the real 36mm arrived.

Top row (quartz) : The Sekonda quartz chrono and Timex DeWALT Ironman have been with me for decades so they are probably staying forever. The new orange F-91W matches the colours of my cycling club and is my riding watch.

Second Row (Laco) : I love the style and legibility of these Laco fliegers but I suspect I might sell the Type B in 2024 as I prefer the Type A.

Third Row (Baltany) : I have nothing but good things to say about Baltany watches, especially if you are new to the hobby and finding your way around as the affordable prices mean you can avoid expensive mistakes. The sand dial field watch is staying. The linen dial dress watch is lovely but it will probably go as I feel the one below it can now fill that function. The Hamilton homage will probably stay (and it is a real strap monster).

Bottom Row (Swiss) : 1. The SeaStar was my most worn watch of 2023 (the next two arrived late in the year). Precidrive accuracy, gorgeous bezel, highly legible, lovely dial and my favourite 36mm size. 2. Longines Spirit 37mm Champagne Dial on the matt beige strap (I bought it in the bracelet but I feel it looks a bit "washed out" on it) - so much depth and detail to this dial, COSC movement and my preferred date at six. 3. The year's big purchase - I bought the Spirit the same day I registered my interest in a 36mm Explorer, expecting to have to wait about 12 months for the Rolex to be allocated. It was a bit of a shock to get the call 9 weeks later! This watch has been everything I hoped it would be and more. I appreciate that it is a huge amount to spend on a watch but my intention is to keep it for the rest of my life and it was a retirement present to myself.

What's next? - at the moment the Explorer has stopped me thinking about new watches. I did try on a Polar White Explorer 2 in the AD but the 42mm size was way outside my comfort zone. If they announce a 40mm (or 39mm) in 2024 I could be tempted. If not then a CW C63 Sealander GMT is a possibility.

Really nice collection. I love a linen dial and have been sorely tempted by a few vintage models recently. Looking forward to seeing where your collection goes next.
