Filling an Explorer shaped hole

I thought I'd like an Explorer but two local ADs couldn't (or wouldn't) give me any idea of how long the wait would be and there is no way I'm paying more than the list price on the grey market. So while I wait for "the call" I thought I would buy a stopgap.

Having bought two previous Baltany watches and being very impressed with the cost/quality ratio, I opted for their new Discoverer automatic model.

Quick specs: NH38 movement, 39mm diameter, 47mm lug-to-lug (at the limit I set as being acceptable for my wrist), AR sapphire, nice bracelet with milled clasp. Screw down crown, 200m WR. The only slight negative is the fautina which I'm not a big fan of on this particular watch.

I appreciate that homage watches aren't for everyone but before I bought this I thought I would like an Explorer, but I was in two minds as to if it was just a bit too plain/boring. Having worn this Baltany for a few days I now know that I want an Explorer. The design of the dial, indices and hands strike the perfect balance between readability and visual interest and it has to be the perfect GADA watch.

I have bought all three of my Baltany watches from Baltany.co.uk and have been very satisfied with their service. I also like the fact that being UK based I will have no surprise import duties or taxes to pay.

A very happy new owner so far. I probably need to try it on some NATO straps next. Now, if only Baltany made a 36mm version . . . .

That’s got a nice look to it. I’m waiting for the hype to die down on the new 40mm before I start shopping for one. It will be a few years I’m sure.

Looks really good! Non-watch nerds would see a nice watch and wouldn’t know it’s an Explorer homage. That’s probably about 95% of the population. 😆

·

Nice, I have the Pagani homage of the explorer. It is smaller (36mm) and has a different look, which I do like. The important point is you like it.

·

Thanks for sharing and as a fellow Brit it's good to know there is somewhere local to buy from!

I have this one hands are different though.

I’m also dreaming about explorer but haven’t made up my mind if paying that much makes sense. Been looking at Hamilton murph. Sexy looking watch!

Great watch! If you’re looking for something in 36mm, depending on if you’re into the vintage era of Explorers, you may want to check out the Lorier Falcon, I really love mine.

Possibly look at a Smiths Everest too (seemingly always sold out though, and it’s a mad scramble when they do announce a restock 🤷‍♂)

For a take on the modern Explorer, the Islander Manhasset is pretty cool and also comes in at 36mm. 🍻

I 2nd this option from Joker. The Bernhardt Binnacle Anchor is a fine, fine watch. There's a few iterations out there too, so look for a few past ones in case those appeal more.

Looks good

That's a very fine looking watch there! Very exploreresk indeed! 👏👏

Good day Gary, by any chance you have more photos of this Baltany Explorer in other straps? I can't seem to find any on the internet.

This is the only other strap I have tried. It looked really good but it is tricky getting the bracelet off (I had to buy one of those spring bar plier tools).
