Is 3+1 collection a myth?

I am new to this game with only 8 months of experience and hoping to keep my collection at 3+1 philosophy. Daily, Sporty, Dressy + Beater/Fun. I started with this thought and quickly forgot about it and had 7-8 watches at some point but that drove me nuts. Instead, I thought I should keep it at 4 but at a decent price point where I can afford with ease.

Although not being the cheapest, my 62MAS is the beater as I think the concept of beater is not to bang it against the brick wall but to have a watch that won't raise any eyebrows on how much I spent on a watch. I find that when I say it's just a Seiko, nobody really asks anything else.

Do you keep a limit for your collection? If so why?

I think having more than 5-6 watches would lead to diminishing returns, lower wear times and decrease the connection of watches with the wearer so 3+1 is a working philosphy for me 🖐️

Good set of rules! 👏

That vintage Omega is 💕

Is that a Reference 166 series? I've been looking at a few of those to add to my collection.

It's Japanese only release 168.0061 from 1970s. I’m selling mine on chrono24. Send me a chat if you're interested!

I've always keept a limit, though that limit has evolved over the years. I was a 1 watch guy for many years, then I've ebbed a flowed up to my current 6.

I think through 2024 I may sell on the few I don't tend to wear and collapse down to 3+1; dive, field, Qtz grab'n'go, and beater. That seems to be all I actually wear anyway 😜

Love that qtz idea. My GS is a 9F quartz and it's such an ease to have something always ready to go. As for me, I'd love to have a GMT in my collection. Might change the black bay to black bay pro at some point.

I couldn't agree more. There should always be one space for an accurate quartz. Mine is the Casio Oceanus T200, mostly because I'm a huge Casio fanboy 😆

#casio #oceanus may be the best #quartz ever!!

·

Nope, sky is the limit here!

And I find nobody ever ask's about my watch regardless of the brand.

·

Love the idea, but not for me :b that is some serious set of watches u got there, with the limited amount of Time. That Omega is drop dead gorgeous

·

I wish....🤣

·

Great collection by the way.

I prefer a small set of watches so I can wear them all regularly. I think a core collection (excluding any beaters and sentimental watches) of 3-5 is ideal. What type of watches is personal preference but any more than that feels unnecessary to me.

·

3-5 is a sweet spot for me focused on quality and not quantity. I am in the process of winding my collection down from 14 to 4-5

·

Good one there, I've already have 10 n am working on reducing them even though I didn't intend to have a collection in the beginning... I know, easier said than done right. 😁

I think stop looking at watch vids is a good start... 😂🤣

·

Hotdamn collection, congrats!!!

My watchbox holds 12 and although it's been that full from time to time, I like to use it as a guide to stay under. Presently I'm at 8, and it still feels like too many watches to properly enjoy. I see people post SOTC posts (something I've never bothered with, myself), and they're like, "Here are five boxes full..." and I just think that's insane. I mean, more power to them. If they like it, then fine. But personally, I think it's insane. As I say, I'm dealing with 8 watches at the moment, and plenty of them are getting next to no love as it stands.

·

Great collection bro ill say this is a good number. For my self i limit my collection to 8 in the box + 1 on the wrist 👌

True, although 3+1 is a new one (4? Why can’t we say 4?)

It’s the same every time.

One collection

Two collection

Three collection

Ha ha ha

Anything under 6 is probably a selection. I don’t think it really matters, you get the number that works for you. You have to wear the things in the end, otherwise what’s the point. OP went mad at 7? Yikes.

My limit apparently is unknown and may never be hit 😂 watches in drawers, on my desk, in my three boxes, closet, etc. A disease

·

I think, its a good philosophy, however, now you have started your watch journey, there may be significant events in your life that you may want to mark by buying a watch. These may or may not take the count up depending on if you decide to do a one in one out. However you may hold on to already significant watches with emotional significance as time goes on.

Remember it's a marathon not a sprint and you will have a collection to tells your history.

Good luck with your journey

·

That’s a great idea. I should have followed that. Instead I went the DJ Khalid route 😅

I think my perfect would be 4. One diver, a chronograph, a field watch and a dress watch. Ideally one should be a white dial. Maybe an integrated bracelet watch as a 5th or instead of the dress watch.

·

IMO 7 is the magical number. Even voldy used it. Also one for every day of the week

·

I have a very similar philosophy to you. More than 3-4 watches just felt excessive. By consolidating and focusing on a select few pieces, you end up with better watches that you wear often.

I have:

  1. A genuine Beater, that definitely will get scraped along walls and bashed inside engine bays.

  2. A high quality GADA - daily wear, doubling as a dress watch.

  3. A dive/travel/adventure watch for beach holidays, hiking, fishing, camping.

  4. A new role opened up this year. An itch-watch; A rotating position in the watchbox where I can buy/sell/swap in/out to help scratch the itch of this terrible affliction of watch collecting. For the moment it's a Moonswatch, but it could easily be a vintage dress watch, or one of the dirty dozen.

·

Limits exist only in the mind. 😋

·

3+1 is NOT a myth!!! I follow this rule very closely and so far it’s kept me out of trouble (i.e I’m not bankrupt!). If I buy a new watch, another has to go. My philosophy has been keep the few watches that you actually love/wear and spend the time/effort maintaining them.

·

Lovely collection!

I personally try not to have any rules of quantity or types.

People tend to forget watch collecting is a long game so even if some of your watches don’t get too much wrist time now it doesn’t mean it will be the same 5-10 years from now. For many it’s a new hobby or a flex tool and this skews what having watches means.

I have 10+ so far and wil continue to add because some I bought with the intent to wear 2-3 times a year and others almost every day. You can’t have even time distribution unless your collection is made of similar watches.
