True "Beaters" - What's yours?

I've always thought the definition of a "beater" is the one thing the entire community agrees on - a watch that you don't mind getting scuffed up.

But the more I read and ask around, the more I see diversity in brands and what they mean.

Image

For some, a beater also has to be the most affordable piece. As pictured above with the Casio(s). His beater of choice is the venerable "Casio Royale" in olive green. Despite owning robust pieces from luxurious Swiss brands, he still prefers the humble world timer. "I don't have to think twice when I wear it," he says as he gulps his fifth latte.

Image

But there are some who also require a certain level of versatility in their beaters. A watch that encapsulates their style so well that it matches anything they wear - whether as the outfit's centerpiece or compliment. Pictured above is a cult classic: the Pepsi SKX015 in 38mm.

Image

"Affordable Casios and Seikos are synonymous with beaters at this point," another man says as his A100WE-1A sparkles in the afternoon sun.

An interesting pattern, I must admit. After speaking to more than a dozen people, almost half of them bear the two Japanese giants as their chosen beaters.

Image

But of course, there are others who walk a separate path. Amidst the crowd, a man appears with a miniature Must De Cartier, basking ever so gently beneath his collected stature. "With my lifestyle and career, this watch is a perfect blend of fashionable versatility and elegance," he says with a stern face.

For some (including myself) it's hard to justify calling a luxury watch a beater. It sounds a bit condescending, even. But it proves to show how different our lives can be - and that's something beautiful!

Thus he made a good point: "If you're just going to baby it, then why buy it in the first place?"

Image

I started reflecting on my choices - not doubting, might I add - since the niche-within-a-niche DW290 "Mission Impossible" holds the title for my personal beater for the latter half of a month. It used to be a G-Shock (DW6900, for those wondering) but in my personal definition, a beater should also make you FEEL something.

There's this ineffable magic whenever I dawn the DW290. Perhaps it's because I'm a film geek, and the first Mission Impossible movie is still my favorite out of the franchise. Or perhaps the design is a refresher from the usual analog/digital shapes and sizes I see in the wild.

Image

In the end, though, it's completely up to you. In the words of the SKX owner, "I’d say wear what you like," and don't let the words of others hinder your choices.

So tell me, what's your daily beater?

I have a few mainly G-Shock beaters but my current favourite is the Edifice. Strap cost more than the watch 🤔

Looks cool nonetheless. Tell me, what do you like about it?

In the days of old, Rolex Sub were tool watches and as such ‘beaters’ but now they are luxury watches. That said, I am going to change out my sub to the Seiko SKX when I assemble my IKEA furniture

I love its around £40 and looks cool, little explorer ISH. Not too big, very light and super comfortable. It's a bit too shiny for my taste but that won't last long 😉

Incredible watch. I see you’ve wiped the “illuminator” label (and presumably the world timer too). How’d you do that?

I took the module out and used a Q-Tip and Goo Gone. It takes around 10 minutes and some finger force LOL.

Edit. I knew I saw it some where on YT:

Does the job (used to be my best watch many years ago) tried casios (great watches) but can't get on with resin straps.

When I do eventually purchase that watch I might give it a go! Thanks!

I love the dial, man. What’s the ref number?

By that definition all my watches are beaters

·

Don't really have "beaters" per se, mainly just tools I wear to track time. Haven't really worn my dressier options much, since they aren't as hardy/resistant to shock. Here are some in no particular order....🤏🏻😎🤘🏻🤙🏻👌🏻

At the end of the day, any watch worn is better than none! #useyourtools

Is there one timepiece that you tend to gravitate more towards?

·

These are the watches that currently reside in my “beater” drawer. I usually grab one of these in the morning when having coffee or running errands. The white MRW-200h is the beach/pool watch while the Mudmaster is my exercise/active watch.

Id put my mudmaster up against any watch on the planet for toughness.

I think youd need to take a hammer to it to break it. 👌👌

Thanks for sharing. My only concern is the same as yours - the size. My lanky 6.5 inch wrist aren't exactly suitable for that. God knows I want one, though.

It is on the larg size, but fits very well on mid size wrist. If you want one, don't hesitate!

Likewise. Which Casio/G-Shock did you order?

A700W-1ACF, and you?

Is that a blue or silver dial? Or does it depend on how the lights hit it?

Currently I keep finding myself picking this up. I'm new to watches, bought a bunch of cheap ones, different styles. Field watches seem to be my thing... the simplicity of the Weekender is also getting a lot of daily wear too, whatever style that is...

Image

Great watch! The main appeal of G-Shocks and field watches is the peace of mind they bring when you wear them - you don't have to worry about scratches, damage, or getting your arm chopped off by a passing moped.

I'm not sure which model to get though, do you have any recommendations? For insight (without sharing too much) I teach, workout outdoors, and I'm a bit clumsy. Also, the smaller the better! 🍻

G-shock - This one is definitely my favorite out of the 3. This G-shock model is unique and stands out from the rest. It gives me a more futuristic vibe than the others, and it's a JDM piece. You would call it the G-shock 'Arnie'

Image

Seiko - Thanks man.
