Are You a Hardcore Watch Fan?

What is a ‘Hardcore’ watch fan? How would you make that distinction? Is it owning more than one brand, or owning several watches, or knowing obscure brands, or is it something more? I’m curious! Let me know!

yes, ignore that it’s been a long time since i last posted. yaboy’s been busy.

Id say pretty much anyone reading this by definition is a "hardcore" watch fan 😁👍

Hard-core sounds like an obsession, I don't think I'm one. Hell I only look at watches to buy 4 times a day.

I think the first step is moving beyond parroting whatever people hear on the internet (esp. parroting comments by random people in the comment section or in forums) without doing any actual research. This leads to insane and objectively wrongheaded comments like . . . Grand Seiko not being a luxury watch company or being devalued b/c it pushes Spring Drive or Rolex being the best--don't disrespect the crown, brah! or people collecting G-Shocks not being real collectors or a real collector NEEDS to have a Speedmaster (and only one actual version/iteration counts) etc. etc. I could go on . . . These people are everywhere and you should ignore them . . . they always have a "But actually!" in their back pocket and that but actually is also usually insane.

The only requirement imo is a passion for the subject that moves beyond the superficial (and there are a lot of people more than happy to fill a watch box without knowing anything about what they are buying). The latter camp that just fills a watch box without much thought just b/c they can might call themselves a hardcore watch fan, but they are just a collector or a hoarder or someone that likes to spend money. I think we sometimes see the difference when we see the collections of certain celebrities vs. celebrities who obviously show a genuine passion and evolution and have connections to their watches.

You'll note that this leaves it wide open for even someone without any watches to be a hardcore watch fan . . . which I think is a thing albeit maybe rarer in a community like this one (but that person can and does exist and is maybe saving up for their right watch . . . and to say that person doesn't breath watches wouldn't necessarily be accurate. They might know more than someone with a full watch box in other ways!)

OK, I admit it...you got me! 😂

I’m an enthusiast but I wouldn’t consider myself hardcore.

Is this even a question?

I think the majority of people on here would have to say yes.

As for me, absolutely!

I'd say people have different ideas about what it means. And that's not uncommon in any fandom. I make a podcast based around a TV series. I come across some people who are like, "I'm hardcore into this show!" and you see they have the TV tie-in novels, and posters on the wall, and cosplay at conventions, and own every episode on Blu-ray. And you think, wow, you really are hardcore. And then you come across someone else who thinks they're hardcore and they don't do any of those things. If anything, they present as a very casual fan, but they believe they're hardcore into it. And that's the thing; it's all in the head.

When it comes to nice and exciting watches it’s well worth it.
