New member intro and showing off my small collection

Greetings everyone! I’ve only been a member of this forum for a few days and have so far found it to be a refreshing change from that other well-known watch-seeking forum.

I’ve only been “into” watches for four years, but I would like to use this post to introduce you to my collection. Thank you in advance for reading.

First up is a 31mm 1940s Timor. I’ve been told by collectors that this model was sold via PX outlets to USAF personnel as an upgrade from what the military provided and that it was popular with the US Army Air Corps (the guys who transported strategic supplies to military bases around the world). I don’t know if either is true, but its beautiful patina seems to support that exciting backstory.

This watch was purchased from wierclock on Etsy (Tristan Wier) who expertly cleaned and serviced it prior to sale.

Welcome to the Crunch! 🤝

Beautiful WW2 Timor!

·

Well, that certainly is pretty.

Here we have a 1951 Waltham curvex.

The first photo has the Waltham Watch Co. factory building in the background; I live one town over, about twenty minutes from there. Visitors to the Boston area are recommended to visit the free Waltham Watch museum on the first floor. The building is a local landmark and has been converted to condos, offices and it has a restaurant.

I hope that Mike and Shirley had a long and happy life together. 😊

This 1955 Longines belonged to my grandfather, who passed away in 1969 when I was five. I’m not sure, but it might have been a 65th birthday gift from the family. It was given to me by a generous older cousin a few years ago, and I sent it to Tristan Wier for restoration.

Here’s another heirloom watch that originally belonged to my late father-in-law in Japan. It’s an October 1963 Citizen Super Deluxe 25-jewel on the original Maruman bracelet that he wore it on. My wife found it tucked away in a dresser at her family’s home in Kumamoto, and once again Tristan Wier got it up and running.

My FIL was a great guy, and I always think about him whenever I wear it. In fact, I deliberately wore it in his honor when my daughter got married a couple of years ago.

Welcome, you’re in the right place.

And that Timor is an awesome watch!

This Timex Marlin from 1966 is kind of interesting. It was made in the Dundee, Scotland factory and I am pretty sure that Marlins with this dial were only sold in the UK (and possibly the continent as well) during 1966-67, because that’s where they all seem to come from. I purchased this one from an eBay seller in Northern Ireland.

There is nothing particularly special about this plain Tandorio that I bought for $54 on Aliexpress, except its Seiko NH35 movement is unusually accurate, typically running maybe +1 second/day, which is just ridiculous for such a cheap watch!

If I had unlimited resources, I would buy a ‘50s Rolex Submariner like the one that Sean Connery wore in the early James Bond flicks. Until I win the lottery, my stylish Lorier Neptune IV will have to do!

I am a huge fan of both the Bauhaus aesthetic and Mid-Century Modernism, so it’s not surprising that I own a couple of 34mm Junghans Max Bill hand-wind reissues. This one is about two years old and has a silvery face and simple, non-numeral dial. It is very elegant and works well as a dress watch, but it’s also simple enough to wear it as a casual watch.

Welcome to WC! Love that Timor! Really nice vintage watch.

Enjoy that bad boy!

Cheers

Here’s my other 34mm Junghans Max Bill hand-wind. I bought it used, and I believe it was made sometime prior to 2006. Note the cream (not silver) dial and lack of lumed pips on the dial. The lume on the hands is also different than the current version’s. I currently have it on a perlon strap, and am waiting to receive a milanese mesh bracelet for it.

Here is one of my Orients in the Orient; I wore my green Kamasu I (JDM) on a black/blue Barton Silicone Elite strap during a trip to Japan this past winter. (Incidentally, my wife and I are planning to move to her native Japan within two years, after I retire.)

·

Big Welcome to the forum. Such a nice collection of vintage you got there.

·

This is my other oriental Orient, a green (actually teal) Kamasu II JDM on a Barton “Flatwater" Silicon Elite strap. I just love the color of the dial, it’s so darn pleasant. I was able to take advantage of the relative weakness of the yen and purchased both of my JDM Kamasus via Amazon Japan. The cost including shipping was not very different from buying an export model here in the US.

Right there with you! My Tandorio’s NH35 runs about +2sec/day. Crazy!

Beautiful Marlin.. I have a particular interest in Timex watches from Dundee. This is one of the nicest I have seen. 🤓

@Yonder this is also the origin story of your ‘Munro’, right?

Spot on, Trevor. All bar one of my Timexes were made in Scotland, including the Marlin Skin diver I'm wearing today.

Thanks for pointing out @beatcomber's to me, it is a beauty 🤓
