Stranded Island Watch

You are on a stranded island…you get to choose one watch from your collection. What are you taking? I am taking my Citizen Promaster. 200m water resistant, reliable and by the time it needs servicing I will be old enough not to care..😊

This beast. It's a certified diver and is big and heavy enough i could probably use it as a hammer if need be. Or take out the movement and use the crystal to start a fire

I mean… If it survived predator..

Hahaha. Good stuff. Can’t argue with that logic.

Hammer time eh lol

My first thought was G-Shock but what happens when the battery dies. So for that matter I'd go with my Omega SMP. It's automatic, shock resistant, great water resistance, reliable and solid. It's pretty much a tank.

Look I could be on strand on an island.

·

The Breitling Emergency, of course.

Lol, but for reals, out of my current watches, either my Tuna...

Or my Pro Diver...

Align that bezel, or I will find you.

·

I would go with the turtle

why do I need to know the time when I’m stuck alone on a deserted island?

·

That's it. I'm buying a Breitling Emergency tomorrow. 😎

·

Easy! The answer is my Pelagos!

Image
·

One of these two for sure.

You can use any watch with hands to find cardinal directions as long as you can see the sun. It's finicky on the AE-1200, but it displays hands. I didn't say it would be convenient, and I haven't tried to use it for that job yet, but in theory it should work.

The picture above is a trap because DST is on. So you must go back an hour. On an island, I wouldn't need DST, so I would turn it off. In the picture, the hours hand is between 27 and 28. An hour back, it would be between 22 and 23. If you point the 22-23 to the sun, south would be approximately at 11 on the northern hemisphere. So now that we know where south is, we know that east is at 26, north at 41, and west at 56. Moreover, every minute is 6°.

Navigating long distances is close to impossible using this method, unless you just need to find a whole continent (at least with my skill set). Maybe it could help you know where you built your camp if the island is a bit bigger. Realistically, getting drinkable water and food will be very life-shortening factors if there is no civilization on the island, and if there is, they are hopefully friendly. But that's not the fun we want to have here! 😉

Ah, thanks for the detailed reply! I was aware of the method you described but it hadn’t occurred to me to use the little analog face on that watch for that purpose 👏

I wanted to know and tried today morning. It really works with the small analogue face ,but I would be totally lost without glasses. So, I'd choose a watch with big hands that I can read without glasses 🙈. Just in case.

Probably go with my Vaer G5 GMT diver, so I know what time it is back home, as I wistfully think about my wife and children.

It is! I love the compass presentation on the dual LCD display much more than the old gen Rangemaster. The compass markers use the entire screen and are blue for contrast. The positive display is very legible in nearly all conditions and the backlight is bright and clean.

I also love that it comes with the new Mudmaster double-tang strap. Super rugged, comfy and breathable.

One of the main selling points for me was how damned flat it lays on the wrist. Very thin and wearable, which doesn’t exactly come across in photos or videos.

$380 is expensive for a G-Shock but is worth it for this caliber of watch.

I have the the older (and cheaper) Mudman and a pro trek that has a lot of the features this new Mudman has it's really cool seeing a watch that's both with looks that can kill. You've chosen really well

Probably this Citizen. Not my most loved piece but whilst my g-shock might ‘do more’ I wouldn’t want to look at it everyday….. this ticks all the boxes though.
