What is your watch collecting strategy for 2024?

So, as the year is well and truly underway, my mind inevitably wanders to my watch aims for the next 12 months. This is a relatively new one for me, no doubt amplified since joining WC this time last year. Previously my 'collecting' has been random and impulsive at best. This year I am attempting to figure out where I'd like my watch collection to be by the end of the year, and in turn wasting less money on impulse buys that I then sell on a few months later.

Do you have a clear strategy, aims and goals for your collection in 2024, if so, lets hear them!

Agreed less impulse buys and saving for the good stuff I only plan on a few watches this year

·

No new watches 💪

·

Try not to go broke

·

It may be the year of alternative case materials for me. I’m eyeing a forged carbon fiber Tissot Sideral for kayaking. Also intrigued by ceramic, bronze and silver.

·

Buy less watches 😵‍💫😅 but if I do focusing on getting less microbrands than I did last year.

Yeah, when I worked out how much money I wasted last year, I am not wanting to repeat it! Good luck. 👍

No new watches 💪

Good luck with that. Probably the hardest new year's resolution to keep for a watch nerd! 👍

Rule number one! 👍

Case material is a good one. I don't have any carbon fiber watches, mine are all pretty standard. 👍

Simple, buy my grail

·

No new luxury watches planned for the primary collection. I’ll still pick up sub $1k budget watches when I find the right pieces. I will be buying one of the latest Islander watches with the upgraded clasp.

·

Resist temptation. That's what I need to achieve. I was doing good last year but only managed to last 7 days in 2024. If and when I buy a new watch, it will have to be something special or something desired. Not an impulse purchase.

·

I’m gonna purchase as much and as many I can afford. Life is short. Get the watch

My plan is not buying any watch....let's see !

That is the hardest strategy of all! Good luck! 👍

Nice one! What are you after?

Thanks for the heads up 👍 Moonwatch only is so super in-depth, I loved researching when I was hunting down my 321. I used it extensively to make sure mine was as original as possible.

Nice one!

It's the re-issue that interests me long term, the Tin Tin inbetween ... unless the re-animated UG knock the Tri-Compax or Nina Rindt out of the park - that 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 change things (perhaps, maybe, if …).

As a kind of unexpected early retirement 59 turning 60 in June, thankfully I was a fan of paying myself first for 30 years and I can retire, but being I'm still new at figuring out living off my investments, I will hold tight. Having said that, I posted a few times about my grail, which I will probably buy in a year or two and call that my exit watch. At 60, I don't see the point in adding to my 100 plus Timex collection (lol). For the record the Grail is a bit under $1,000 and is Timex's first $1,000 watch, it is the Galli SG2. After that, I'll live happily ever after in my Timex Museum.

The Timex / Galli is a terrific looking watch - great exit for a Timex guy.

Good luck with retirement - maybe you should charge entry to the Timex exhibit? Looks great, I'd pay entry (... assuming a lecture is included! ☻).

The process of culling a short list down to '𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘯𝘦' is the best part of the process - closely followed by those 'it never interested me until I handled it' moments you have when visiting retailers.

The time I take to choose a watch these days? I'd struggle to do more than two per year I think!

Exactly this!

I am saving for a Grand Seiko long term and looking looking for a few affordable good deals the rest of the time. I want to enjoy my current collection and be content.

·

Same as every year - chuck money at it & see what sticks 😃👍🏻

That's a solid plan 💪

Last year was essentially a Casio bonanza for me. I went from 0 watches to 9 Casios in 3 months 😅. This year, I hope to be less impulsive and more intentional. I have bought a new 5 pc watch box and will be populating it with a more carefully curated selection.

In terms of specifics, my first watch pick up of 2024 will likely be my engagement watch, I am currently torn between a Grand Seiko Heritage, a Hamilton Murph or a Sinn 556 A. All expensive pieces vs what I have bought in the past though so I have a lot of overthinking in my future haha 😅.

·

Overthinking is a good thing in this case. Good luck filling the watch box

·

I need a good affordable dress watch and probably a few more Casio's lol

·
chronografan

Is that a Ginault? I’ve been meaning to buy one

No.

·

Acquiring a grail piece and other complications (world timer and a Spring Drive)

·

Damn the torpedos!

·

My strategy for 2024 is to stop buying multiples of the same model of watches (I.e. 4-Promasters, 4-MRW-200s, 2-Duros, 2 -5610s, 2 -Lunar Pilots).

More variety in 2024 and just less watches altogether.

So my first purchase of 2024 is arriving today from Jomashop. It is the Orient 38mm Bambino with the cream dial.

I think it will be a nice complement to the white dial version of the 38mm Bambino that I bought last year.

Wait…. what? OH HELL!!

·

I hear you. As someone with several watches of exactly the same model, I'm all about breaking that cycle and adding some variety to the collection! We'll ignore your January mis-step!🍻

·

Just saving for the next one... I'll probably buy it in 2026.
